The issue of addressing environmental problems is now a worldwide concern. The threat posed by climate change and global warming is pushing mother Earth to its near end. The world is now nearing its tragic end, with the construction of buildings becoming a race for supremacy amongst big international organizations. In some countries, construction is one big economic boost, and without it, the economy seems to be stagnant and not growing. We all know how construction sites have posed serious environmental impact.

In countries concerned with the deterioration of the environment, they have instituted measures to minimize the bad implications of these construction sites. Wastes and hazardous materials come in various forms such as excavation and demolition materials, road building and maintenance materials, worksite waste materials, and so forth. We can just imagine how one site alone can impact the environment; if there is no proper regulation and equal concern, it will exacerbate climate change and global warming.

“Polluting the environment has serious and long-term implications for public health.” Environmental Management Systems sprung out of concerns of organizations to comply with regulations and codes for environmental compliance. When standardizations became a trend, standard-writing bodies produced a standard for managing the environmental impacts of an organization; the British Standards Institute (BSI), a world-respected standards body, is one of them. ISO 14001, first published in 1996, is a Standard to minimize environmental impact.

Firms seek ISO 14001 certification for so-called “green advantage, to attract ethical investment, reduce insurance risks, and reduce costs.”
