Major Selection Generally, I am intensely interested in mechanical engineering, particularly in the field of machine design. The fact that I enjoy learning Mathematics and Physics, gives me the interest and eagerness of applying the principles that I have learnt in class. For instance, through the calculation of inertia and the friction available between an object being pulled on a table by determining its weight and the force applied, is an aspect of Physics. Equally important, through the use of Mathematics, one can determine what will happen when a heavier object is used, or when a greater force is inserted and vice versa. As such, I am particularly interested in the practical application of science. This is because, through science and engineering, I can be able to develop a logical approach to determinations of various mechanical problems. Moreover, engineering provides me with the opportunity to apply various theories and techniques that can be used to tackle and provide solutions to mechanical problems. Moreover, the fact that I am always excessively fascinated with the functioning of machines has also made develop the interest of practicing mechanical engineering. In fact, during my younger years, I usually dismantled my toys with the aim of learning how the machines functioned and integrated. Quite surprisingly, I found out that changing various aspects of the machines such as motor transmission would alter or lead to a modification of how the toy operated. As I grew up, this interest developed even further and I thus started of working on relatively bigger machines such as my mountain bike and my father’s old broken motorcycle. I was intrigued by complexity of the integration and functioning of the several parts of the machinery. This made me develop an understanding of how machines works in terms of converting electrical, kinetic, or man power into movement. My choice to major in Mechanical Engineering was therefore facilitated by my liking of Maths and Physics as well as an intense curiosity of knowing how the machines integrated and functioned. Freshman Year Experience Career planning is an important factor that can enable an individual to attain success more so after the completion of the undergraduate degree. Essentially, CP 101 played a big role towards influencing me on opting to choose mechanical engineering as my career of choice. At school, due to my high performance and interest in maths and physics, many professors, including my calculus professor, recommended that I should consider becoming a maths tutor. I took this suggestion and since the school schedule offered discussion time, I was able to share my knowledge and skills, particularly in maths and physics, with my colleagues. I highly found this program beneficial, not only to me but also to the other students. To illustrate, whereas I gathered extra knowledge and skills such as interpersonal, technical and interactional skills, the other students also experienced an overall success in maths. Even though I found tutoring enjoyable and fun, it is still worth noting that my interest in mechanical engineering was not wavered. Relatively important, during the summer of 2014, I had the chance of participating in an improvement internship program for engineering majors. This career program alleviated my desire for pursuing a career in mechanical engineering. In addition, working in groups to complete projects such as moving of spare parts from wrecked vehicles to the mechanical stores also provided me with the opportunity of working in a team. As such, not only did I improve my social and interpersonal skills, but I also learnt that working in a group and as a team I an enjoyable experience. Furthermore, working in and as a team also reduces the workload since the many ideas of doing something are combined into one valuable idea. Generally speaking, CP 101 has enabled me to even further develop my knowledge and skills in a way that seemed unimaginable before. I always had a passion and liking for maths and physics, but the CP 101 class further emphasized this since through it, I was able to develop a structure that would not only guide me towards attaining good grades, but also show me what I could expect in the mechanical engineering career. As such, this class equipped me with important knowledge pertaining mechanical engineering, and for this reason, I was highly aware of what to expect. In summary, after attending the CP101 class, I was convinced beyond doubt that indeed, mechanical engineering would be the best career for me.
