Why I want to study Petroleum Engineering Oil and gas sector greatly contributes to the economy of my country Nigeria. The present government has initiated a reform program directed at power sector’s privatization which can bring a revolutionary change in the oil and gas sector in Nigeria and guarantee reliable power supply. In an environment where the government is initiating policies to attract more foreign investment, and increase the capacity of production, getting a degree in Petroleum Engineering surfaces as the right choice.

Ongoing growth in the consumption of energy worldwide implies that demand for Petroleum Engineers is increasing. In spite of the economic climate, active recruitment of graduates in the discipline of Petroleum Engineering by oil companies remains buoyant. Job prospects for Petroleum Engineers are abundant both within Nigeria and abroad. My cousins are Petroleum Engineers and have been working in the Gulf States for over a decade. They are a huge source of motivation for me. Having seen them successfully progress professionally as Petroleum Engineers, getting a degree in Petroleum Engineering is not a decision that I have reached in a hurry.

I have been learning about Petroleum Engineering by consulting such websites over the Internet as Rigzone and SPE as well as watching university lectures. Once I went to Mount Pilchuck with my friends for climbing and was amazed to see how the rock composition varied from one level to another. Learning how geological variations impact our ability to develop a field would be fascinating. Opportunities for excelling academically in Petroleum Engineering are tremendous. Every year, thousands of scholarships are offered to the qualifying graduates of Petroleum Engineering worldwide.

Being an interdisciplinary field, students study a broad range of subjects including thermodynamics, geology, mathematics, chemistry, and fluid mechanics. I can easily specialize in one of these core subjects of Petroleum Engineering after graduation.
