The government, through the Electrical and Mechanical Services Department (EMSD), gives the scheme for equipment and appliances used at home as well as in the office. In order to promote environmentally responsible products, the people of Hong Kong, importers as well as manufactures are encouraged to join the scheme. There are labels that are issued with the main aim of providing information on energy consumption as well as efficiency to help making better a decision when people are considering purchasing such appliances and equipment. One of such labels is the Coefficient of Performance (COP). The Coefficient of Performance (COP) is a measurement of efficiency, which measures the amount of power input to a system compared to the amount of power output by the same system. The COP has no dimension because the input and the output are both measured in Watt. The theoretical value of Coefficient of Performance (COP) of the energy-saving household appliances should be well labeled for the customer.
Additionally, the government has also introduced a mandatory Energy Efficiency Labeling Scheme (EELS) to extend the public’s choice as far as energy efficient appliances are concerned. Therefore, public awareness on energy saving will be raise.
The Electrical and Mechanical Services Department (EMSD) is promoting the Energy Efficiency Labeling Scheme (EELS) to among the people of Hong Kong. Various household appliances as well as office equipment will incorporate a given energy label which will be informing the consumer of the products energy consumption and efficiency. Since the consumers are made aware of this scheme, they should be able to purchase such household appliances or office equipment.
The push by Hong Kong’s Electrical and Mechanical Services Department (EMSD) make it easier for the people of Hong Kong to choose energy efficient product and consequently join the government’s effort to conserve energy. Thus, it can minimize unnecessary energy wastage. The Electrical and Mechanical Services Department (EMSD) is therefore obliged to make sure that the people are aware of the scheme and to ensure that the people develop positive attitude towards the scheme.
The energy conservation is one of the factors that the government of Hong Kong encourages the people of Hong Kong to participate in such a noble undertaking.
