In contrast, the sectors dealing with the construction of commercial and industrial buildings are the only ones who have recognized the importance of the Design and Build Procurement Method aimed towards the betterment of their projects. Hence, the second hypothesis was accepted, that the Design and Build Procurement Method is confined only to the industrial and commercial buildings sector. The Design and Build Procurement Methods ensured better project performance in terms of reduction in the length of time devoted to the completion of the project, better value for money and better quality, among others.
Whether or not they are dealing with big or small projects, members of the Irish Construction Industry may consider shifting towards using the Design and Build Procurement Method, considering that the latter positively affects project performance. Table of Contents Chapter 1 Introduction Background of the Study Procurement is paramount in every construction business. It generally refers to a number of issues, as it concerns the gathering and organisation of different individuals and companies (Hughes, Greenwood and Hillebrandt 2006).
In a stricter sense, project procurement refers to that organisational process through which a building required by a client is obtained, thus involving groups of people who are organised systematically, taking their duties and responsibilities and forming relationships amongst them into consideration (Masterman 2002). Nowadays, construction industry members apply various types of procurement systems. Some continue to comply with the traditional method. In contrast, others have already employed fast-tracking techniques such as the build-operate transfer, turnkey, management contracting, cost-plus contracting and design and build (Masterman 2002).
The shift from the traditional types of procurement to these new types is pertinently brought about by the quest of the construction industry members towards a more efficient and speedier project delivery system. Developing new kinds of procurement is connected with improving the firm’s overall project performance (Molenaar and Yakowenko 2007). The shift towards new forms of procurement methods is considered an essential innovation to the traditional procurement method in the sense that these are all aimed toward meeting the continuously changing demands of the clients of the construction industry (Hughes et al. 2006; Greenhalgh 2011).
In general, the study focuses on two procurement methods used by the construction industry members in Ireland. The present study focuses on traditional design and building procurement methods. The background of the study presents essential concepts related to the two to serve as the groundwork by which the latter parts of this study are founded. Statement of the Problem, The researcher focuses on the differences between the Traditional and the Design and Build Procurement Methods to determine which significantly improves project performance.
The construction industry's importance to Ireland's economy has been well-established. However, because of the many complexities associated with building projects, including the design, construction and management of the people employed in the said sector, the construction industry has experienced a remarkable downturn. Project performance is critically important in bringing back high standards within the industry. Hence, the slow shift from Traditional Procurement Methods to more innovative ones, such as the Design and Build Procurement Method, is crucial.
