CLT Teaching Policies and Curriculum in Korean Elementary School - Research Paper Example

• Abstract

The Korean elementary school uses four distinct CLT approaches in its curriculum: listening, reading, speaking and writing. These approaches are critical to the success of student participation. South Korea’s curriculum identifies each method as centered towards meaning and the ability to competently communicate that meaning. This paper looks into the factors that have affected the full implementation of CLT in South Korea. The research looks at the confidence of teachers in using CLT in class and their views on the 6th curriculum, with the aim of establishing their efforts in implementation. The study also identifies the competency and incompetency of teachers when using CLT, as a learning tool, and if their incompetence is partly to blame for the challenges in the implementation of CLT. Equally, the research explains the curriculum shifts from 6th curriculum to 7th curriculum and how the South Korean Ministry of Education continues to push for the implementation of CLT through training and curriculum reviews.
