Media Journal Name: University affiliation MEDIA JOURNAL Week 2 Ideology It is a fundamental endeavor for any intellectual as well as skeptic to wash away any unhealthy belief of ideology. It is proven beyond no doubt that the worst enemy of reasoning is ideological beliefs. It does not only include political and economic issues but also is widely evident in social, historical and religious aspects. Therefore, we can say ideology is a moral as well as an intellectual foundation by which the world is viewed through. Ideologies are different, may be valid on invalid, depending on the background setups like family, society and culture. Scientific ideologies are considered worthwhile and valid since they are argued. Its values doubt, common sense, empiricism and self-knowledge are agreed under thorough examination of the repercussions. Then ideologies are actually destructive especially if they become the spring of identity. They strengthen the worst tribal perspective of nature thus extricating the world between us and them: those are blessed with knowledge and the mentally handicapped thus are condemned to flounder ignorance and perplexity. Ideology is a calamity since it leads to closed mindset, motivated logic, self-righteousness and political uprightness. Therefore, it leans to discontinue skeptical inquiry and genuine discourse. Week 3 Modernity, Discourse and Power The enlightenment of the people in the name of modernity has caused the discourse and power rapture over the history, present and the future of human race. The morning of the new and modern era has shaped the understanding of the history of modernity. Evaluation of the transition of modernity poses various questions and dilemmas in the non-Western people. By modernity, the social institutions have enhanced the power and discourse structures. The discernment of the world has been upgraded to a higher level. This is not only because of the cognitive comprehension via the levels of rationality in science, but also through values of progress and secularism which are actually inseparably intertwined with the previous. In every institution, the modern theories of modernity have a propensity of evaluating various forms of comprehension and perception by exclusivist and relativism. Therefore, modernity is valued as one of the most vital faculty that shapes the social institution and media such as the communication, influence and authority in the world. Week 4 Images, Power and Politics The image is a tool used in political campaigns. For instance, posters, mailed literature, billboards, websites, blogs, social networks, papers and Television are some of the communication paraphernalia applied by politicians. Visual culture is essential when it comes to communication. Greatly, our lives are subjugated by imagery and illustrational technologies which give room for both domestic and international flow of ideologies, information and politics. Through usage of accessible, clear, and vivid examples in prints, television, advertisements, internet, the news, visualization advancements and digital news has been evident the importance of applying imagery scenes in the meaning of various cultural arenas. Images can be analyzed in diverse cultural as well as presentational subjects such as: power, the look, bodies, desire and ethnicity. The methodologies used include: semiotics, psycho-analysis, postcolonial theory, feminism and Marxism. Images, Power and Politics are indicative contents which draws their meaning when they have produced, consumed and spread among the viewers. Every day, our aim is to study the world and make sense out of it. Through representational approach: application of language and images in creating understating of the world that surrounds us. With the help of such, we will thus comprehend the images and the ideologies such as power and politics which exist in the world. Week 5 Nationalism There is a linkage between TV and Nationalism in the world. Television actually is referred to as the technology of articulation of time-space. TV consists of textual programs which aid the flow of information as well as the discursive configurations for the spheres of the social figurativeness. By 1960s, the TV was everywhere, thus it became the key arsenal of linking local people with the states, showing the national consent and dominating the way of thinking of people. The ideologies are discussed over here, defining the interconnections between gender and nationalism through the TV imagery. Television is a representative of the sophisticated and usually antagonistic communication and media into the enlightening, political, collective and financial foundation in Kuwait. TV was supported to be political instrument which fosters national civilization and edify citizens. Again, television is one of the global media industries which are responsible for initiating technologies and content to act in response and demand. Week 6 Race and Otherness The Iraq film, Three Kings, has significantly occurred in the scene whereby Wahl berg is confined and tormented by thee Kuwait soldiers. The tormentor’s disposition shows an inconsistency in the film’s show scheme. Despite that the tormentor was torturing US soldier, he is characterized as a casualty of US neocolonial subjugation. The humanized character was evident to him whereby he does not suit to be a binary Arab. The tormentor was said to possess psychological personality like: sympathetic and understanding. The dialogue exhibit uniqueness on how he views Arab-American relationship. The dialogue tries to equate US racial discrimination with US neocolonialism, forming a parallel pattern that other films overlook. Racism is ignored and instead oneness/otherness is promoted. Developing a composite portrayal of the adversary, this film visualizes the Iraqi baby being tortured and killed by American bombasts. The viewers actually get moved by this action and as a result, they start to sympathize with the man and put his motives into consideration. Week 7 Post Studies Kuwait has ventured in art studies so much. Kuwait University which offered further studies in art and related faculties was founded. It was aimed in meeting the ambitious efforts of the growing needs in artistic, sociological as well as economic perspective of the upcoming civic society. Art’s most important mission is to gather the student’s intellectual empowerment which is a significant arsenal for academic excellence and creation of self-reliance persons whose cognitive products are intelligent and responsible. Contemporary Art Platform (CAP) has stood as the only art space in Kuwait which is non-profitable. It enhances communications in contemporary art by supporting and promoting the rising artists. Post studies are offered to these artists via a program of presentations, practices, lectures and other procedures. Public Arts library, studio space and film screenings are other post studies facilities offered. Week 8 Globalisation Globalization and localization has been demonstrated in Kuwait. Globalization is actively affecting the Gulf area and the surrounding countries since 20th century where developmental changes of globalization was evident and effectively magnified this part of the world compared to others. Clash of styles that exists in the area has created tension between globalization developments and the dichotomy of the intellectual empowerment which is currently shaping the environment. Modern- traditional, Islamic-Western, and Local-International is the repercussions of the tension. The chaos and lack of identity as well as the sense is actually the caused outcomes that crowned environment. Globalizations and its processes in Kuwait and the Gulf areas cannot be separated since they coexist in an incessant state of revolutions and interactions. The Kuwait program on development, and globalization especially in Gulf countries was a ten year multi-disciplinary international research program. Week 9 Environment & Consumption (Public Reports) The science for environment policy persuades the people from using bottled water at high consumption rate. Tap water is unreservedly present and good but people from various localities e.g. Kuwait consumes bottled water. Actually the bottled water has negative impacts to the environment: water wastage and pollution. It requires 3 litres of normal water to manufacture just a litre of bottled water. In 2014, it was estimated that over 100 billion litres of normal water was shattered annually. Consequently, a concern was raised that fresh water is becoming extinct across the world. During the processing of bottled water, carbon IV oxide is generated which causes climatic changes. On the same, bottles are not re-used, thus causing a landfill and littering the ordinary environment with synthetic ravage. Argonne National Laboratory is actively helping in environmental protection and conservation. It aims at economy depending on renewable energy, to minimize carbon hoof marks and freedom from alien oil. Monitoring energy utilization and releases will help reduce environmental effects and enhance daily operations. Week 10 Gender, Youth & Desire (Music Videos) Most of the young people are exposed to youthful desires through music, television as well as other media channels. Actually, this music shapes the sexual attitudes, ideologies, and character of these young people. Youth are at a risk since the cognitive skills that give room for critical examinations of the music messages and making decisions concerning the future possibilities are not yet fully grown. Gender equality is an issue that became evident in recent decades. The sociologists argue that, no matter how much binary system of gender equality will be fought, it will actually remain inequalities. For instance, the hullabaloo over Nelly’s music video: Tip- Drill brought Hip-hop gender problem. For long, hip-hop has been obliged to focus o chauvinism, misogyny and homophobia that create bases for both black and white men lyrics. This principally affects the genre and as a result neglect womanish viewpoint which could bring the antagonism. Reference Lists Steven Novella (Jan 11 2015) Ideology is the Problem.
