Student logbook Week 1 This week assignment was given to us in class by the lecturer. The lecturer explained to the students the importance of completing all the tasks. We were also directed on how progress was to be reported and then need to reach to the teacher anytime for assistance. Week 2 This week I was involved looking for the relevant material on the topic. I revisited previous notes on the topic visited the library to check on any good books and noted the good books so that I could borrow them anytime I needed them. I also checked on the net to find the materials and I uploaded some of the materials that I found to be relevant. Week 3 In this week I started reading through some of the materials and consulting my fellow students sharing and comparing the materials they had and what I had. I started answering some of the questions of task 1. Accompanied with fellow students we also consulted the lecturer where I reported on my progress. On meeting the lecturer discussed the materials I was using where I reported on the wide materials I had found on the topic. The lecturer pointed out the need of using the class notes as the guide. Looking at the few materials I had written on task 1 I was advised on ensuring that I was using simplified language and being keen on grammar . Week 4 This week I was dealing with task 1 incorporating all the issues that had pointed out by the lecturer the previous week. Having collected a lot of materials on thermodynamic process it was time to write down the relevant contents. After defining the processes later in the week did derivation of the thermodynamics laws. In this process I realized it was important to be able to use the required symbols and to be well conversant with the equation editor. The whole exercise enabled me to be efficient in writing equations though I realized it is much slower when compared to writing the equations on a paper manually. I submitted what I had done to the lecturer at the end of the week. Week 5 In this week I was involved in applying the equations I had derived the previous week in solving problems. In revisiting lecturer’s notes and going through the materials I had gathered I realized that there are a variety of questions that are related to the equations that I had derived. In some cases a situation is described and one is required to know the equation to apply to the situation. Also I learnt to give a physical interpretation of equations. I also learnt about the engineering application where the equations come into play I came to learn that some of the equations represent physical situations that can be approached but may not be achievable. 1 met the lecturer at the end of the week and presented the work and obtained feedback. My lecturer pointed out some of the situations where I had made mistakes by using the wrong equations. Also he enumerated on the physical interpretation of the equation and emphasized that it is important to include the process diagrams as this helps in understanding the process. Week 6 In this week I was involved in making some corrections that were pointed out in task 1 I was also conscious of the fact that I needed to move faster so that I may not be out of time. As I was correcting the mistakes that I had made in the calculation part of task I was also involved solving task 2 since this involved a lot of similarity. Deriving the formulas involved a lot of practice with equation editor and understanding the manipulation of expressions in the desired direction. I applied the equations derived in solving the numerical question of task 2. This was much faster having been solving similar question during the previous week and also the insight that the lecturer had given me in previous meeting proved useful. Contacting fellow students for assistance also was proving useful. I presented my work to the lecturer in the course of the week . Week 7 Having been tackling task 2 the previous week this week I embarked on task 3 . I also received a feedback from the lecturer on what I had done the previous week where there was few corrections. This week I read a lot of materials on engine cycles which involve application of a combination of some of the process I had dealt with previous weeks. It was important to present the cycles diagrammatically where I found good simplified in online materials and I replicated the same. In describing the cycles it was important to know the physical interpretation of what was happening. With the description of the cycles and knowing the physical interpretation I was able to understand exactly what was happening in each of the process that were included in the cycle diagram and the limitation of each cycle and why there is modification of the cycles. By the end of the week I had managed to give the description of the cycle and just embarked on some of the calculation involved in the various heat engine cycles. Week 8 In this week I received the comments from the lecturer on what I had presented on heat cycle. There was no problem pointed out but then he felt that more was to come from the calculation part which I had not done previous week. I revised a lot of materials on calculations involving heat cycles. I found it being somehow tedious it required high concentration and constant consultation of friends. It is through the consultation that some overlooked mistakes were pointed out. By the end of this week I had tackled many calculations involving the heat engines apart from what I been required to do in task 2. The extra calculation helped in understanding the subject matter and was useful as a build up for being able to tackle the calculation in the task. Week 9 In this week involved reviewing of thermodynamic cycles and the issue of efficiency was addressed. This involved going back to what I had done the previous week. The issue of how the carnot cycle of very important in assessing the efficiency of engine cycle was looked into. The carnot cycle was seen to have the highest thermal efficiency but is ideal and not practical in real life. In seeing the lecturer there was general discussion on the issue of thermal efficiency with regard to the thermal cycle. Week 10 This week I was dealing with how to improve the engine performance. I was reading through the various method of how engine performance can be improved. The similarity and differences we delved into. This week involved a lot of reading where inclusion was this component was being used by in the motor vehicle industry. The issue of performance was found to be interesting eliciting a lot of discussion among the students. It opened up my eyes on what is happening in the motor industry. Week 11 In this week I was still dealing with improvement of performance of heat engines. Having read a lot and discussed with fellow students majorly on super charging and turbo charging this week involved writing about the systems. In writing about the super charger and turbo charger relevant diagrams were used in distinguishing between the two. The areas of application of each were also pointed out. This week also I was looking at how intercooling in work hand in hand with supercharging and turbo charging. In both supercharging and turbo charging we have the gases that are being introduced to the engine being compressed thus leading to increased temperature. Thus intercooling becomes necessary component. This week I was also looking into the issue of heat recovery and the components that are included in heat engines for heat recovery. The issue of incorporating all these component on efficiency and the cost that comes with them was fascinating. Week 12 I was expounding on the issues of improving of the performance of heat engines. Having looked at the components in the previous week it was easy looking at the disadvantages and advantages of each of the components. The limitation of the components was pointed out. This involved making slides which were used for presentation. In making the slides it was important to have content that was clearly visible and to make the appearance attractive so as to draw attention. Week 13 I was dealing with task 6. This brought me to the issue of calculation that I was dealing with three weeks ago where the tasks involved calculations. This task involved not going beyond the heat engine cycles and looking at the power that is coming out of the engine, the dimension of the engine and discussing the issue of improving the engine performance may be improved. The work of task 6 was send to the tutor. Week 14 This week involved getting feedback from the lecturer on what I had send to him the previous week. Also I was compiling the final report that included all the previous tasks. Week 15 This is the week I have submitted the compiled report. I received feedback from the lecturer where some few corrections were recommended to be done on the compiled report. Week 16 This is the week I submitted the final report. It involved meeting the lecturer as a class and he pointed the issues that arose on the process of tackling the tasks involved in the topic. Read More
