Internship Final Report Name: Institution: Internship Final Report Introduction This report provides details of the activities I carried out during my summer internship at Abu Dhabi Marine Operating Company. The company is one of the major producers of oil and gas in the Middle East. This report will therefore provide details of my responsibilities as an intern in the organization. The report will provide information of my challenges, achievements, and lessons learnt. The report is organized into different sections. The first section will provide a summary of the company’s profile. The second section will focus on the job description and work plan according to the responsibilities assigned to me. The third section will focus on my internship objectives while the fourth section will be about my accomplishments during the internship. The subsequent section will detail the lessons learnt while the last section will conclude the report by providing major highlights. Company Profile Abu Dhabi Marine Operating Company I one of the major player in the petroleum and gas production within the Middle East. Since its establishment, more than 50 years ago, the company has been focused on the improvement of oil and natural gas reserves (ADMA-OPCO, 2015). This has been ensured through the incorporation of information technology as a strategy of heightening its capacity to acquire some level of competitive advantage in the global market. Since 1962 when the company made its first international crude oil shipment, Abu Dhabi Marine Operating Company has made progress in both storage and export of petroleum products (ADMA-OPCO, 2015). With constant expansion initiatives by identifying novel drilling grounds, Abu Dhabi Marine Operating Company has a vision of realizing greater market scope in relation to the supply of oil and gas. By embracing technology and innovativeness, the company hopes to become a world leader in offshore oils and gas production (Davidson, 2009). Job description As an IT security networking and communication trainee, I was introduced to the IT and communication departments which is largely an administrative arm of the organization. My responsibilities as detailed by the company was to provide assistance and acquire skills in any IT, security networking and communication department. This in the view of the company would expand my knowledge and skills in eths elected areas in ways that will provide me with first-hand experience on different activities in the context of a company. I was introduced to the officer in charge of student training and my internship supervisor. He provided guidelines and schedules that I was to follow throughout my internship. According to the schedule, I was to encounter six sections in the Information technology department. The first week was an orientation week where I was introduced to various departmental heads in charge of customer service and the company’s website. At the company’s website, the company in the organization of its activities introduced me to the Maximo Service Desk systems, which detailed the use of technology. I was also introduced to the Emergency Response Centre Room from which the monitoring of activities outside the company was addressed. In the subsequent week, I was engaged in matters of networking and database management. During these sessions, I acquired skills on backup processes, mirroring stripping. Other than learning on how to manage matters related to information technology system, there were other professional attributes that were considered as necessary learning points throughout the internship. These included proper communication and interpersonal skills, teamwork and high ethical standards in addressing organizational issues. Internship objectives Prior to my internship, I familiarized myself with the expectation of the university and professional bodies. These expectations were important in the development of my internship objectives. I also conducted research activities on the expectations of interns when working at Abu Dhabi Marine Operating Company. This provided a clear perspective of what to expect and how to achieve my expectations. My objectives were categorized into technical business and personal objectives. Technical objectives Under this area, my intentions were to upgrade my knowledge and capacity in matters of information technology, information systems since these fields are constantly changing, and working in an organization such as Abu Dhabi Marine Operating Company would provide a perfect platform of acquiring the latest information. I also had the objective of finding a link between the theoretical aspect acquired in class and the technical activities conducted in a company. This would ensure the implementation of the professional knowledge. In addition, it was my desire to promote my zeal of innovativeness in matters related to information technology and information systems. Through my interactions with professional and technicians from different fields within the company, I had the objective of acquiring more skills to improve on my experiences in matters of information technology and information systems. My final objective under this section was to play an essential in role in gathering technical ideas with regard to the on-going project innovation process in the company. Business objectives In this section, one of my objectives was to learn the strategy used by the company to excel despite the economic affiliated challenge experienced in the UAE. I also had the objective of learning about how some of the organizations strategies developed by the company work. These included team operations among other professional approaches of operations implemented by the company. My last objective under this section was to acquire knowledge on the best strategies that work for dynamic companies such as Abu Dhabi Marine Operating Company. Personal objectives Under this section, my first objective was to create a positive impression about myself. This was an approach that I was to use in securing any chances of being hired on a permanent basis by the company. Furthermore, I also had the objective of creating a network with established technicians and other business gurus. This was aimed at the expansion of my understanding with the existing personnel in the oil and gas, information and ate communication technology. Throughout my internship, I also had the objective of elevating my confidence levels in relation to the expectations of my profession. This was the only way through which I could ensure the realization of my goals, objectives in innovates and professional growth. My last objective under this section was to garner an exclusive recommendation upon the conclusion of my internship. Aligning my technical, business, and personal objectives with the expectations of the company and those of my profession was the only way through which I could ensure that I was on the right track in terms of acquiring relevant skills and professional expertise in matters related to my profession (Lin et al, 2011). Accomplishments The role of any internship program is to provide student trainees with high-level work experience considering their naivety on matters related to the execution of different professional roles and responsibilities. From an ideal perspective, internship programs prepare student trainees with relevant experiences and skills on their chosen professional field. Companies provide an ideal environment for learning the skills since they provide learning opportunities, real life challenges (Altaf & Awan, 2011). During my internship Abu Dhabi Marine Operating Company, several items account for my accomplishments. Technical knowledge One of my achievement entailed learning about the process of developing simple websites using SharePoint program. Through the internship, I was also able to acquire essential knowledge on how to integrate different business systems with the objective of offering business solutions. The main achievement arising from earning how to use the SharePoint program and integration business systems was that I had improved my technical and scholar knowledge on business systems. One of my objectives throughout the internship was to improve on my communication and interpersonal skills to facilitate the networking process. The internship program provided a perfect platform for the elevation of interpersonal relationship capabilities. This is because after numerous interactions with professional within the company, I acquired knowledge and skills on essential aspects that were essential in the development of effective teams when executing a responsibility. Throughout the internship, I also encountered and understood the extent of the practical work that is affiliated with the field of information technology. This is concerning an understanding of the operations of computers and communication essentials, which is inclusive of the acquisition of an ability to engage in effective diagnosis of laptops. One of the most essential skills that I acquired when I was part of the technical team at Abu Dhabi Marine Operating Company was how to engage in effective communication using the VSAT satellite system. Through different departments in charge of information technology, I was able to acquire the most updated and effective technological skills to ensure that my knowledge on the application of information technology was not only relevant but also operational in terms of the realization of organizational objectives. Operational technicalities service On the first week of my internship, I engaged in three particular tasks. First, I contributed to the organization of computer-related documents concerning the receipt date and user information. The second task was that of checking the laptops vis-à-vis their condition to work and the software required. The other task was a prerequisite of checking the laptops. While executing these roles, I was able to make statistical tables considering the serial numbers of these machines for easier sorting during the process of recycling or fixing. The organizational culture is founded on motivation of employees. During my internship, I learned that the company operates on a very stable system that supports and manages the undertakings of the staff. For example, the company allows its employees access to their employment profiles. Furthermore, the company also operates within an inclination towards dynamism. This explains why the use of the SharePoint application makes it easy to update the systems. On the third week of internship, the interns were introduced to the existing categories of the security team. These were the cyber security and the information assurance. The interns were also introduced to a company website (aecert.ae) that is a leading trusted secure cyber coordination center in the region. Through the website, the company trains other companies how to secure themselves from cyber-attacks. Through these sessions I was able to acquire skills and knowledge on hoe to protect a website and a company from the possibility of cyber threats and attacks Lessons learnt My interactions and activities in the company’s website department provided knowledge and skills about the SharePoint program. I learn that the program was one of the most flexible programs in matters related to the design of websites. Furthermore, I also learnt that Abu Dhabi Marine Operating Company uses Oracle systems in financial management. This was an indication that Oracle was a reliable system in matters of finance. During my internship, I learned that it was possible to maintain effective information technology systems through a series of screening activities. Despite the screening, as an IT expert I learned that I had a role to play in the management of organizational affairs through system maintenance. This was possible if, just like the other employees, I offer my professional expertise in the field of information and communication technology. In terms of challenges associated with the information technology department, I learned that it was relatively difficult to lay cables at the bottom of the sea to transfer data and this explained why it is important to integrate cable networking with satellite functions. This could ensure effective control and management of existing information and communication systems within the company. During the internship, I learned the relevance of communication and interpersonal skills in the development of an effective team to ensure effective execution of responsibilities. Teamwork at Abu Dhabi Marine Operating Company was an essential ingredient in ensuring the involvement of every employee and student trainees in matters of organizational growth and development in relation to their areas of expertise (Lin et al, 2011). Conclusion Through the organization of the internship and students career office at the university, I was provided with essential insights on the best ways to manage personal and organizational responsibilities throughout my internship period. The Student Careers Office was also instrumental in the provision practical and professional advice through the supervisor who was allocated by the institution. The internship at Abu Dhabi Marine Operating Company also provided an opportunity for me to exercise knowledge and skills that I had acquired throughout my university education. Other than practicing my skills, the internship also provided a platform for learning more skills on the operation of computer related products and other organizational dynamics. In terms of communication and interpersonal skills, I got to improve on my sociability considering that the internship provided a perfect platform for interacting with individuals with different personalities and varied levels of experience. The experts I interacted provided professional advice and mentorship was crucial in the development of my future career goals and objectives. Over rally, the internship was beneficial to because other than the development of practical skills related to academic prowess, I am not equipped with different skills and experiences necessary in my professional field. I am grateful to the university, my supervisors, the employees and the management at Abu Dhabi Marine Operating Company and all the other interns who made my internship experience a success. .
