Jack Seekamp Award The South Australian Murray-Darling Basin Natural Resources Management Board Scholarship APPLICATION FORM The South Australian Murray-Darling Basin Natural Resources Management Board is offering a number of scholarships (The Jack Seekamp Award) for TAFE SA students currently enrolled in study for a diploma or above in Irrigation, Conservation and Land Management, Environmental Management or Horticulture. Jack Seekamp, after whom this award is named, was born in Renmark and as long ago as the 1940’s raised concerns about the salt levels in the River Murray environs and its potential impact on the environment and primary industries relying on the River. He was a long time pioneer of introducing practices that either reduced the impact of salt loads to the river or encouraged actions to address the salt impacts. Hence this award, in his memory, is to support the career development of students with an interest in conservation, environment, or horticulture. The Jack Seekamp Award has a value of $1,500 per recipient. The Award is paid in two $750 instalments in each semester provided that you are still enrolled and actively participating in full time study. (If preferred, you can type your expression of interest and attach it to the application). Name: ----Jared White Commitment to study –Diploma of Conservation and Land Management My commitment and interest to study for the diploma of conservation and land management dates back to when I was growing up back at home. It is also as a result of the experiences I have gain in the field of conservation in conservation related settings in the past three years. My father used to work as a forest officer with the department of agriculture and hence as I grew up, I gained interest in what he was doing and thus I would accompany him to his place of work while being inquisitive as to why the government should dedicate an entire department to environmental conservation efforts. As I grew up, I got a chance to tour Africa and I could see how lack of conservation has led to destruction of natural resources to an extent of endangering lives. This informed my decision to study conservation and land management. I started working in the field three years ago as a junior conservation worker. After acquiring certificate training, I got hired by nature as a conservation officer where my main interest is increasing awareness on why we need to conserve our environment. Since I developed interest in the field, I have done a lot of research as to the extent to which environmental destruction has taken place in South Australia. And although my parents had wanted me to be a doctor, I went against this and hence I used the little money I had to acquire a certificate in Conservation and land management. Owing to my brief study during my certificate course, I have become genuinely enthused by how much we can do to conserve our environment and properly manage our lands both for us and for generations to come. It is this curiosity about the profession that made me pursue work experience as a conservation officer with Nature. Through application of the conservation values and principles in my role as a conservation officer, I have developed a great sense of job satisfaction. In addition, I have become more aware of the importance of gaining respect and trust from the members of public to whom we give the conservation education. If our conservation efforts are to be successful, this is a necessary ingredient. In addition, I have been able to gain an insight as well as practical experience regarding the challenges the conservation efforts face. My ability to demonstrate personal qualities of patience, tact and diplomacy as well as the void that remains in the conservation efforts have reinforced my decision to pursue the profession through studying a diploma of conservation and land management. In choosing to study in Morphettville Campus (TAFESA), I was impressed by the research facilities availed by the institution. I have great interest in working with conservationists in the future and I was thus impressed by the research carried out by Dr Leonard Dunham into what needs to be done to ensure success of conservation efforts. I was impressed on discovering the impact this would have in influencing positive change in attitude towards the environment in general in respect of intervention policies and strategies. In this regard, I aim to focus my study in this area even beyond diploma level and be able to use these findings in practice after my studies. Finally, I aim to stay at the college until I finish the studies after which I aim at doing further studies in the university in the same area. The organisation I work for is aware of this development and are ready to absorb me after I finish studying so that I may make a contribution to the environmental conservation efforts in Australia. By supporting me through granting me this scholarship, you will be positively contributing towards the conservation efforts in Australia by increasing the number of conservationists. I am confident of undertaking the full course within its stipulated time and hence your support will not be in vain. Section 8 – Declaration I agree to TAFE SA providing the SA MDB NRM Board with my name, contact details and course title, if I am successful in obtaining this scholarship.
