Summary To ensure that students fully understand the engineering concepts that are applied in the design and building of houses, testing of such abilities is paramount. In this area of study, students have to use their knowledge of physics and mathematics fundamental laws that are related to houses and buildings. Additionally, students have to have thorough knowledge of materials that are used in the construction of houses and buildings such as steel and timber. Specifically, students have to gain holistic knowledge of the different specifications of such materials that are available in the market, and have knowledge of which specifications to use for different types of buildings in line with the Australian standards for such materials. For instance, students have to be able to know the specific strength, capacity and the serviceability required for a beam in a building, whether the beam is steel-based or timber-based. As the lecture sessions progressed, students gained invaluable knowledge of the fundamental concepts of constructing houses and buildings. From the onset, detailed information was shared with students regarding the key issues that one needs to address when designing a house or building, including the regulation that guides construction of houses and buildings and the code of constructing houses or buildings. Further, students were provided with information on the concepts surrounding the design of a good structure for a house or a building. Additionally they were taught how to incorporate the issue of fire resistance in the design of a house or a building. In addition, information on selection of materials; how to plan for the power usage of a building, especially by ensuring that the house or building fully utilizes free power from the sun during the day; and how to incorporate emergency equipment and exits in the buildings to ensure that the building is secure enough was also shared. Students also gained useful knowledge on the issues of soil condition, contamination, easement and the issue of drainage water. The relationship between land topographies and the structure of buildings or houses, especially the design of the foundation, was also shared. Afterwards, invaluable information on material types, for instance, the types of timber and steel that are used for construction was also shared. Moreover, students were taught how to draw sections of a house or building, taking into consideration the measurements of each dimension of the sections. For instance, students were shown how to draw door plans, sections and roofs, window plans, elevations, and so forth. For the information shared during the lecture and tutorial sessions to sink in, students were engaged in the design of two buildings during the semester. The first building was composed of a drawing plan, section plans, and elevations. The second assignment was to come up with a design for a house utilizing the specifications of a client, and using principles that are similar to the first building. Introduction The main objective of this subject is to equip students with relevant information about the various construction methods. The fundamental components of buildings and houses include floors, doors, foundations, frames, foundations, and walls, which can be either load bearing or non-load bearing. Service and structural requirements are a primary concern because they are part of the basic principles of construction, particularly in the construction of long-term buildings like skyscrapers. In the course of the semester, students have been practicing the design of building using two examples. The design for the first building was done during the regular lecture time. The assignment was used to test the students’ understanding of the fundamental concepts of constructing houses and buildings. These basics include inner and outer walls, slabs of buildings, roofs, doors, and windows. Special emphasis was given to the dimensions of the aforementioned basics of construction with a view of equipping students with the requisite design skills. Additionally, the exercise also paid keen attention to the selection and use of materials with the aim of ensuring that students can select the most appropriate materials and the most appropriate material specifications for various components of a house or building. During the tutorial session, students were guided in designing a second building. The second assignment was based on specific details and requirements from a client. The house was composed of a master bedroom, two other bedrooms, and two floors. Reflective journal The subject, Building and Control 1, has been very informative. The lectures on codes and standards of construction have particularly given me invaluable insight on how the construction of houses and buildings is regulated with a view to ensuring that buildings are sufficiently secure. We were assigned two tasks that were very helpful in making me practice what we had learnt in our lectures. One of the tasks was during the lecture session and the other task was given during the tutorial session. The task done during the lecture session made us practice how to design houses and buildings while at the same time designing car parks, site plans, houses and streets. In addition, roofs, drawing plans, door dimensions, window dimensions, were also done in a holistic set of designs that can be used to build a complete and standard house. This lecture-session exercise helped us to gain practical knowledge on how to come up with detailed drawings and designs, which contain the necessary information for ensuring that the designs translate to the planned building. As mentioned above, the tutorial session involved a client who had provided specific details of what she wants included in the plan for the house. Mrs. Eugenia Wolfe provided details of the number of floors she wants and the number of bedrooms she wants for her house, and other related details. In this exercise, we had to establish the details of the site on which the house would be constructed and figure out specific details of the basic components of the house. In the first phase of the project, we started drawing the plan for both floors following the instructions of the client. In the second phase, I have embarked on the designs for the living room, the bathrooms, the bedrooms, and the kitchen with special attention to the various positions of the sun in different times of the day, because the sun plays a major lighting role for all buildings during daytime. In the third phase, I have drawn the roof of the building with special attention to the height and angles of the roof at various positions. In the fourth phase, I have drawn the doors and the windows of the house, giving the dimensions for each door and window. In the fifth phase, I have figured out the house’s shadows in various dates and various times of the day. In the given case, the client was interested in the house’s shadows at 3pm, 9am, and 12pm in September 22nd. Conclusion In the design of houses and buildings, it is important to have knowledge of the basic components of a building. Basic components of a house or building are the foundation, the roof, the floor, walls that can either be load bearing or non-load bearing, windows, doors, frames and so forth. The design of each of these components is determined by a variety of factors ranging from client specifications to the functionality of the building. For instance, a building that will be constructed in an area where the soil is contaminated with loose materials needs to have a firm foundation. The design of the foundation and the selection of materials to be used in the foundation should be such that the building will be stable and secure. In the same way, a building that will be put up in an area with plenty of sunshine needs to be designed in such a way that it maximally utilizes sunlight, thereby saving on energy consumption. Further, the roof of a building that is used for commercial purposes may be designed in such a way that it allows sunlight to pass though, with a view to illuminate the building during the day. Additionally, the design of buildings is also guided by codes and regulations that are meant to guarantee the safety of houses and buildings. In addition to the knowledge of the fundamental components of buildings, a person designing a building needs to have deep knowledge of the various options that are available in the market in terms of materials, as well as the most appropriate situations in which such materials should be used. Additionally, it is important to have knowledge of the various codes and regulations governing the use of materials in various parts of a building. This subject has been greatly informative because it has enabled me to know the various steps that I can employ in designing a house. It has also provided me with knowledge on selection of various materials for use in different parts of a building.
