12 January Describe your academic interests and how you plan to pursue them at USC. Please feel free to address your first- and second major selection. Economics is my first selection. This subject attracted me from very first day of Micro Economics class in which teacher professionally taught this course by making relationship between opportunity and ambition which collective increase economic growth and personal wealth as well. In other words, economics is not something only related to benefit oneself but has dual benefit in which both an individual and society benefit from the experience of Economists. However, this type of subjective is not easy to learn as it has complex and challenging economic models that require considerable amount of thinking, effort and commitment as well. For this subjective, one does not require a general type of thinking instead more deep and critical thinking is crux and needed for learning the in-depth knowledge inside this subject. At the same time, my personal ambitions are very much attached and related to this subject. For example, I believe that an individual has a responsibility toward society and that responsibility demands that the individual should not only work for personal development and growth but that they should be inclusive and contribute to the society as well. Additionally, at USC Dornsife, I have realized that the core course has much resemblance with my study objectives which will benefit to my future study as well. This resemblance is for all students but the important aspect is that it is up to the student to avail this opportunity and convert this resemblance for increasing one’ academic level and understanding as well. USC students are known to be involved. Briefly describe a non-academic pursuit (such as service to community or family, a club or sport, or work ,etc.,) the best illustrates who you are, and why it is important to you. I have been blessed with positive attitude, persistence and concentration which have been provided by Taekwondo. Before the start of this exercise, I was unable to remain positive and only negative attitudes and lack of concentration were two main features in my work and activities. Consequently, this did not provide opportunity to create persistence which is highly essential for uninterrupted success in life. However, when I attended the classes of Taekwondo and subsequent considerable attention and support of my training teacher, I came to realize that there are certain values which construct and deconstruct person’s life, attitude and behavior. This understanding enabled me to find values, like positive attitude, concentration and persistence as well. For me, these values are very important as they help me to understand others and rationale behind their perspective as positive attitude highlights that every action can and must have a reason and that reason has an understandable effect on the perspective which is represented through a particular point of view. On the other hand, the negative attitude, which generates negativity and impatience, was the main cause behind not showing strong resistance to any change rather preferred to give up; and such attitude was common in my personal and academic activities before attended the classes of Taekwondo. Thanks to training provided during Taekwondo in which difficult situations were given and I and other trainees were required to handle them with accurate precision. Later on, I realized that it was the result of that hard and intense training that considerably changed me and my thoughts about life and ways to attain certain goals as this training and supervision of Master considerably influenced me to change my current standards of thinking and action by replacing them the standards, such as persistence, concentration and strong resistance to obstacles. USC students are known to be involved. Briefly describe a non-academic pursuit (such as service to community or family, a club or sport, or work, etc.m) that best illustrates who you are and why it is important to you. Volunteering helped me to understand the sufferings of other people. Last summer 2013, I joined an organization aimed to help children affected by the curse of poverty. In this type of work, I and other members of the organization were required to help and support the children. While serving as a general assistant, I was given an opportunity to collect money and distribute to the children. While watching and observing the sufferings of the children, who were hardly earning one US dollar a day, I noted that the children were not weeping and were not crying instead they were happy and were not making complaints about their poverty and presence of insufficient food and other basic human needs. This social service taught me two things: optimism and appreciation. In this case, optimism is about good things which will come, appear and benefit to all of us. We should not complain about the scarcity of basic human needs instead we should remain positive optimistic about life. For example, let us suppose a glass, which is half-full and half empty, has been placed on a table. An optimistic person will see and say that the glass is half full with water whereas the pessimistic person will be of the opinion that the glass is half empty. And the crux of this example is that good and bad things happen all the time; it is up to us that which perspective we subscribe. Describe your academic interests and how you plan to pursue them at USC. Please feel free to address your first- and second major selection. Sometimes, the mixture of both teaching method and subject content helps nurturing interest in the subject. In my case, this fact can be deduced. While studying first time Economics and its basic concepts and theories, I realized that the subject course and topic were very interesting as they have much relevance to the day to day life matters. However, some students consider that the subject is boring and challenging as well. And for me, the subject is very interesting as its topics are very challenging and it is this challenging outlook of the topics that fascinated me to further my studies in this subject. At the same time, teaching method is also important for increasing interest in subjects. I personally believe that a teacher and her teaching method play a very vital role for developing the interest of students in the subject topic. For this purpose, the teacher is required to understand the learning style of students so as to provide the same to the students. And it is this strategy which was pursued by my teacher who firstly taught me the subject of Economics. Since then, I have been pursuing Economics and plan to become a research assistant. This position requires a number of skills and expertise for satisfying the requirements of research assistant. These skills are required as the assistant is required to conduct research and the research is not descriptive or any other activity that can be understood very easily instead more strong analytical and critical skills are required for satisfying the job description of this position.
