Task: Minds On: Family Action: Have children in groups of four’s discussing what a family is and what activities are done in a family. Consolidation: Class discussion on what it means to be in a family Learning Goal: Students should be able to describe the concept of a family Success Criteria: Ability of a student to describe a family in terms of membership and activities Assessment Group participation Task: Minds On: Mixed race families Action: Teacher introduces what a newspaper photo with a mixed race family. The students are expected to look at the picture in groups of three and discuss what they feel about the photo. Consolidation: Students should share their feelings with the class. Teacher to guide the discussion to ensure that students appreciate the mixed race Learning Goal: Students to appreciate the fact that mixed race marriages are normal just like other marriages. Success Criteria Students should be helped to overcome any prejudices against mixed race marriages Assessment Filling of the activities sheets Task: Minds On: Single parent families Action: Read to class a story about parents separating. Teacher to engage the students in discussing what happens to the family, children, mother and father. Children to be guided in discussing the fact that child cannot stay with all parents at the same time as they used to do before. Consolidation: In groups of four’s students to be asked to identify other causes of single families such as death Learning Goal: Appreciate the single families Success Criteria Ability to identify some cause of single families Appreciate single families as normal Assessment Participation in class discussion Group discussion Task: Minds On: Same sex parents Action: Show students the photo on the cover of Mommy, Mama and Me. Therefore, same sex families is normal Assessment Participation in filling activities sheets Task: Minds On: Mothers Action: Children to fill two sticky notes. On one sticky note they will write what they like about their mothers. On the other note of a different colour, they should write what they do not like about their mothers. These should be placed on the notice board. Consolidation: Class discussion of the sticky notes. The teacher helps students to understand that parents have the best interest of their children and should be respected. Learning Goal: Respect for parents Success Criteria Appreciate that parents have best interest of the children and should be respected. Assessment Filling activities sheets Task: Minds On: Divorce Action: Students should note down some of the reasons they do not get along with siblings, and colleagues. Teacher to read to the class a story of a family where parents cannot get along and it ends up in a divorce. In groups of five, children should discuss their feelings about the story and share these feeling later on with the class. Consolidation: Engage students in a class discussion on consequences of divorce on the children.
