Developing Instruction Manual for Library Construction Introduction Design of an instruction manual on the use of a library facility is necessary since it gives details to university and college students on proper utilization of books. Students at Durban University of Technology are considering increasing the rate of education and knowledge through reading at the different levels within society. In this region, there is a lack of reading areas, where readers can spend their time reading and gaining knowledge. Reading plays, a big role in the expansion of society’s knowledge and at the same time strengthens students’ beliefs (National Center for Education Statistics 1). This calls for the need of having a convenient place with latest books and facilities.Implementation of such idea enables creation of a reading society, where people, who love reading but cannot afford buying books owing to high prices, can borrow them for free (Covello and Hazelgren 57). The instruction manual will assist the process of providing a library with best environments where varieties of books are provided from various disciplines such asbusiness, health, travel, and history. However, making reading a habit within society requires a lot of investments that require cooperation between public and private partners (Brags 1). The importance of reading and how this habit affects individuals and societies at large is widely known. The instruction manual will be providing a setof rules and regulations on books that meet the demand of the community within Durban City. This will be an answer to the many concerns on the rate of reading in South Africa, which is very low due to lack of enough reading areas within libraries. The aspect leads to development of a plan capable of introducing the required reading area within the Complex bookstore. We are convinced that you and the institution will like this plan and its implications to the reading society, and will hence implement it because it will generate excellent results both to the Complex bookstore and the entire society (National Center for Education Statistics 1). Problem The instruction manual is necessary for the purposes of giving proper direction on the use of the library facility. Policies and procedures on the use of the library facility enablethe management and customers to find easy time in the process of gathering information for various researches and projects as per the schedule. The instruction manual will also eliminate several barriers that might prevent full utilization of library resources. These include accessibility to enough research books and the availability of reliable sources including fully formatted places. The instruction manual will also give details on the library equipment and various construction materials for the building. Instructions on employees and their requirements, such as offices, chairs, computers and other office supplies, will be necessary. Furthermore, for the library, the manual will give instructions on the need for carpet floors, chairs, tables, sofas, books, magazines, newspapers, documentary movies, and book shelves. For the kids' corner, there will detailed instructions on requirements such as small wooden chairs and tables, carpet floors, critical thinking games, children books, colorful book shelves and closets, papers, painting pencils, documentary movies and television. For the e-book, instructions will be detailed on the utilization of electronics such as iPads, computers, and laptops. For the coffee shop, we need coffee tables, chairs, sofas, coffee maker machines, cups, plates, a refrigerator, and cashier machines. Proposed Program The creation of the instruction manual will simply involve placing all the work schedules and methods on utilization and interpretation of various aspects of the facility. Important policies such as Collection Development Policy (CDP) will be included to assist in effective management of information and other resources within the library collection. Since most of the methods are already available and the location suggested is strategic, strong motivation and incentives will push this project to succeed (Brags 1). The instruction manual will include detailed explanations about the selected land to build a fully equipped bookstore, methods, cost, services, materials, salaries, feasibility, and an overview of the expected result (Sant 128). Research will be conducted to identify issues falling under every step. In this case the first set of tasks will include hiring of consultants to form an evaluation team, conduct consultation with key stakeholders on key issues, finalize the terms of reference for the entire evaluation, prepare up-to-date databases of projects, and develop protocols for the project, which includes documenting reviews. The evaluation will begin by establishing the context of reading culture within the community for the purposes of extracting relevant information (Abrahams 24). Data will be collected using diverse types of tools such as interviews of key stakeholders and online survey. The data will ultimately be analyzed after proper quality control is conducted. Trends, lessons, main findings, and conclusions will be extracted to prepare a draft report by early January. The draft will be discussed at a consultation workshop with key stakeholders soon after (Gilligan 63). Personnel The owner holds advanced qualifications in information technology and a master’s degree in information science. This enables easy drafting of the manual owing to extensive knowledge on the area, hence facilitating the handling of issues on the library business system and network support. Presently, my academic qualification and work experience as an intern at a library makes me well qualified to create the instructional manual. More so considering am familiar with research process as I had applied it whilst undertaking my undergraduate dissertation it means I will be able to design questionnaires, collect data, as well as analyze them in a professional manner. Schedule Table 1: Work Schedules on the Instruction Manual Cost and Budget Our proposed budget is as provided in the table below. It is good to note that most of the costs are based upon expectations. However, the owner will incur costs on setting an e-library. (Murray 151). Table 2: Budget Projected Costs $ Subtotal = 100,000 Land Subtotal = 26,000 Building Structure Design Flooring Ceiling 9500 6250 5125 5125 Subtotal = 21011 Materials and Equipments Books Furniture Office Supplies School Supplies 5588 1800 9000 4623 Subtotal = 5000 Technology E-Library 5000 Subtotal = 25000 Personnel Staff Expert Staff 15000 10000 Total Funding Request = $ 177,011 Conclusion In conclusion, all the information and statistics that are stated in the instruction manualwill ensure appropriate action towardsutilization of the library facility, hence changing the community’s reading culture and lifestyle. The plan also focuses on increasing the percentage of literacy within the community, which will involve more than just establishment of a reading area. However, the community must have the motivation towards changing and accepting the concept and the importance of reading. The proposal will focus not only on providing profits but also the knowledge and awareness of all different fields of study. Works Cited Abrahams, Rhoda.
