Geog 102: Cultural Geography Journal Entry Usher’s stepson declared brain dead after being hit by Jet Ski. July 10, OMG! Yahoo Usher’s ex-wife Tameka Foster’s son had been knocked unconscious on Monday after being hit by a jet ski. It has been confirmed that the boy Glover was on a boat having fun when he was hit by a Jet Ski. The person who was controlling the Jet ski was a family friend of Tameka named Jeffrey Hubard. Jeffrey was tested for alcohol, and it has been confirmed that there was no usage of alcohol. Glover was immediately rushed to hospital where it was seen that his brain was not doing any activity, and he was declared brain dead. Glover is on life support and doctors are desperately trying for a method to bring the kid back to life. Journal Entry # (2). Fertilizer for the face? July 5, 2012. NY Times Apparently, people are now using animal extracts to apply as a remedy for their body. Aestheticians are using bird poop extracts which was a treatment used by Japanese very long ago, as a method to cure their skin damage. It is processed in a scientific manner, and a facial is made which mainly consists of bird poop enzymes which help make the skin shine glow. This concept has been introduced since the start of this century, and celebrities like Gwyneth Paltrow have also used treatment for her skin, consisting of bee venom. More and more companies are trying to grasp this concept, and many have introduced enzymes consisting of sheep wool and snake venom for the skin and nails. Journal Entry # (3). Want to live longer? It has been studied by the researchers that if people reduce the time they spend on watching television and spend more of their time being active, than they would be more agile and could live longer! Researchers used data from the United States health examination survey from 2005-2010 to determine the time people spend watching television. They then examined the time people spend watching television and deaths that have occurred during that period. A positive link was found between both independent variables, and it was concluded that if people change their lifestyle and spend their time being more active than they could increase their chances of living longer by more than two years. The Economic Times Freelancing which is a method by which hiring firms contact independent and skilled workers who are either in need of a job or require more money to satisfy their needs, is at an all time rise. This contract based job which also pays off well, is booming currently just as the out sourcing market did, at the start of the century. A reputed freelancing website, namely, freelancer.com has more than 30% of its users from India. The type of work is almost same as that of Odesk but the platform provided to workers is betters as workers do not themselves have to find employers, rather work assignments are given to them to perform at specific deadlines. Nature Jared Diamond, a reputed geographer studies that if a country is more wide apart in a north-south direction rather than in an east-west direction, than it is less likely to have cultural diversity and is more likely to have indigenous population. He pointed out that countries that span more in latitude have less variation in climate and have people adapted to same conditions. The research of Diamond has also been conducted by a group of researchers at Stanford University, who agree to diamond’s theory. However, there has been different findings by many other researchers who pointed that cultural diversity may be due to economic conditions etc. Journal Entry # (6). Culture of drinking and driving a fatal flaw in ND. 10, July 2012. The Dickinson Press. North Dakota Highway police says that there have been an ever growing number of accidents due to drunken driving in the past few years. Recently, a West Fargo family was killed in an alcohol related car crash and a family which had a pregnant mother died due to a crash with a drunken driver. The North Dakota highway police have also arrested a whole lot of drunken drivers but the problem is not lessening, and they are reviewing measures to stop it. Last year, there were about 6600 arrests. The first time penalty is $ 250 and jail time but offenders usually pay a higher amount and escape the jail sentence. However, the authorities are reviewing their method in order to stop loss of innocent lives. Journal Entry # 7. The number 1 habit that is harming your health. 10, July 2012. HealthCare. The number one illness that is causing an array of diseases that is life threatening is the habit of always sitting down. It has been estimated that more than 50 million Americans suffer from this newly founded disease which is “sitting illness”. It has been claimed by doctors that it can cause diabetes; depression etc, if a person is always sitting. The article further explores new ways to get out of the comfort zone and spend life working and being active like taking one minute activity breaks, and adopting healthy habits. Cleaning one’s house is another interesting activity pointed out by the author. Journal Entry # (8). 8 Religious wonders to see in the US. 10, July 2012. CNN This article mentions that people visit Europe to view religious monuments, but they never prefer America as a place to see religious places. The author points that people are in fault and should visit America in order to see some the most spectacular religious places in the whole world. Places like Baha’i House of Worship, Hsi Lai Temple are little known to people, but they are places of spectacular beauty. Places like Islamic Center in America and Salt lake Temple are more known and are ranked among the top eight religious places in America. However, the best pick out of all should be St. Patrick’s Cathedral in New York which is a view of scenic beauty! Journal Entry # (9). Population growth results in more people, not more prosperity. July 10, 2012. Market Watch. US reports have investigated that efforts by US Government and business lobbies to increase immigration in United States has led to only people increasing and not increase in the economic conditions of the country. It has been estimated by the Federation for American Immigration Reform that there has been 9 million immigrants in the past decade, and their new-born have accounted for 70% of the population increase. Despite such an increase the Gross Domestic Product per capita has reduced by $ 2500. The problem aggravated during the recession, in fact it contributed to the problems of the United States during the period of recession decreasing GDP per capita by more than that of an average country. Journal Entry # (10). How to meet population challenges. 10, July 2012. China Daily. The article mentions that China is probably facing the toughest population crisis than any other country. China’s population changes and structure have paid dividends in the past. In the past, China used policies such as low birth rate which contributed to more adult workers’, but now those people are aging and low birth rate means that the population of workers will reduce significantly over the next few years. This radically calls for a population restructuring. China should alter their policies and introduce old age pension plans it needs to make more efficient use of its older workforce and lastly, it needs to reconsider its family planning policies.
