Four Topics I chose to apply to the of Miami’s Graduate business Programs because I know for a fact that this university has excellence as a tradition and is one of the very best universities in the United States. UM is deemed as one of “America’s Best Graduate Schools”, according to Hurricane: Points of Pride (2011). And I would like also to pride myself that I am worthy to be in one of the top universities if I want to excel in a specialized field. What also attracted me to University of Miami was that the university is also one of the best in Race/Class Interaction. This is very important to me since I am a Chinese, and a university where there is no, if not next to none, racial discrimination would provide me with a very good ambiance and atmosphere for a community of learning for me. The cultural diversity and the university’s openness to it will be also help me in establishing friends and contacts that will be beneficial for my future endeavors. I plan on taking a Master’s Degree in accountancy. My parents own the largest packaging paperboard producer company in Shan Dong, China, and in the not so distant future I will be succeeding them to lead the company. In my internship in the company, I have encountered problems in the accounting department. This is also the reason why I want to pursue such a Master’s degree: to better understand the principles and practices of accountancy and apply them to my parents’ company in order to further the development and enrichment of the company. 2. Since the University of Miami prides itself in having a diverse academic community and having one of the best Race/Class Interaction, I would more than contribute to this cause. With me coming from oriental origins, my views and my experiences will serve as a unique commodity of learning for the other graduate students. In this age of globalization and technology, it is important to have a good grasp and a working knowledge on how the world revolves regarding business matters. And China is a key player in the industrialization scenery and global supply chain of goods and services. Therefore, I will complement their knowledge and understanding of the economy in a global perspective, as they will also mine. I can also share the values and practices that I have acquired from my accounting department internship in a big manufacturing company in China. I can share our effective practices which can be then be integrated and absorbed by my fellow graduate students. In the simplest sense, we could learn from the differences of each other to further better our learning experience in the university. And aside from those things, the other graduate students will benefit from establishing ties and connections with me, which can and will be an asset in the near future. These contacts will then be valuable in future international trades and deals, especially since China is America’s greatest supplier of internationally manufactured goods. Therefore, my participation in this program will be a very good harmony for the university and its other graduate students. After finishing my Master’s Degree in accountancy, I plan on going back to China and working for my parents’ company. With my knowledge acquired from the University of Miami, I would then give remedy and solution to the accounting department problem which I have encountered, the very reason in the first place why I want to pursue a Master’s Degree in accounting. For my short-term plan, managing the assets and liabilities properly would be the utmost goal since with this, the company can better allocate and know its strengths and weaknesses. This will then translate into my long-term goal, when I will already be the head of the company, I will be aiming and envisioning to further the scope of the operations and to even more expand its scale of business by being the largest paperboard producer in not only China but the whole world. The University of Miami will help me achieve this because I believe they have more than the capacity to be able to educate me with the techniques and tools that are necessary for my field. As the university has excelled in producing quality graduate school students, I am confident that under the tutelage of the university I will also be successful. For my long term plans, in globalizing the company, the world standard education that I will be attaining from the university will also equip as to how I will proceed to make my company global in the scale of operations. With my high ambitions, I would also need a high and credible educational institution and degree to achieve such. 3. I discovered my ability to lead during my internship in Yan Tai Da Zhan Paper Industry Co. Ltd where I was assigned in the accounting department. Although I was only an intern and I was being shown the ropes and taught to follow the practices that they employed in the department, something has awoken in me: as much as I have been a good intern and follower, I realized that there could still be more that can be done. I have awoken a sense of initiative in me to pursue what I think will be a direction that will pave the way towards the betterment of the company. But not only that, I also discovered that I am able to make other people see and share with me my visions and passion in achieving my goals. That is when I discovered that I have the ability to lead. I discovered I am capable of leading because I do not shy away from challenges, in fact I even welcome them, and I like having a sense of responsibility. As they say, in order to be a good leader you must also be a good follower. I have been a good follower to my parents and to how they have run the company.
