1. What is the impact that you wish to have on the world? My long term career goal to establish a company offering ‘state of the art’ consultation services would contribute to this intended impact. To guide me more towards this long term career goal, I had set my short term career goal as to become the Chief Representative of Omzest, a multi industry group with more than seventy companies, with which I work as the Personal Assistant to Dr. Zawawi, its Chairman and the Advisor to the Sultan of Oman. The work profile included that of a relations officer and business development executive. These dual roles would lead me towards the goal, as the responsibilities would cater more for my futuristic vision. More over this interdisciplinary role would help me to enforce a better impact on the business world around me. The experiences I have had till now assert the scope of the career goal aimed. My first job at CCTV12 soon after the graduation from Renmin University in law and international politics exposed me to different business realms in the Middle East and inspired me to get assigned the challenging professional opportunity in Omzest. My major responsibilities were to connect the business opportunities and international relations between Oman and China resulting in the worldwide exposure of Oman and its commerce, especially in America. I would initiate Strategic consulting, Investment advisory and Political event planning for Omzest and the Sultan of Oman, which contributed to the acceleration of Oman’s globalization, on the other side setting the paving for my futuristic career goal. Two key competencies developed while working in Omzest were a ‘General management perspective’ through cross functional opportunities, and a ‘Global Vision’. An opportunity to attend global summits in a number of countries along with the Sultan of Oman enabled me to integrate business and political opportunities by developing inter-country relationship at a strategic level through bilateral business relationships. This also helped me to have a global perspective to my career vision. The strategic level inter-disciplinary exposure and the international level of experience enabled me to have the business knowledge and resources focusing more towards my career vision. Recently I initiated the trial to be an entrepreneur as I introduced Chinese water purification technologies in Oman, through which I explored the whole series of business activities involved in an entrepreneurship. However, I could evidently feel my limitation in making the expected impact, as I lacked professional managerial approach and felt the urgent need of managerial training. Yale MBA would be an ideal option for preparing me to make an impact on the business world around me. The multidisciplinary methodology of Yale would provide me with opportunities to delve into each discipline of business including investment, customer approach, market competence, and the market trends. Omzest which was an Oman based company for which I used to work, had a strong base in China as well. I felt it relevant that a company which had the involvement of the ruling royal family of Oman should apply business solutions to public welfare improvement while supplementing to the government’s services. The integrity of the leader in me convinced the chairman on the idea and he entrusted me to research on possible industry options. My expertise on international politics persuaded me to do a research for identifying an industry which would match the policy preference of both Oman and China as this would have higher prospects of getting governmental support. I could analyze that many of the environmental technologies mainly relating to water were of high priority to both the governments. The political thinking eventually led me to the idea of initiating a business venture introducing water clarifier to Oman. As a leader, I inspired the team on the vision to reposition Omzest’s image by solving social problems through business solutions. Though I lacked the technical expertise on the industry, I ensured them to be resourceful by exploring my professional network to leverage high-level political, financial, and other business requirements. I could analyze the situation and identified a number of experts in finance, accounting, marketing, and sales within the team. I encouraged the team with the feeling of ownership and my sincerity could win their confidence. Understanding the situation, a General Manger was engaged by the management to help me on technical issues. I could also train him as an efficient team player and execution leader as he helped my capacity building as well. I created a strong feeling of inclusion within the team as I participated into each section of the business circle. I worked with the cross-department team that I built over marketing, sales, purchasing, and logistics. The effective participation and sharing of leadership was ensured as every one was taken on board with due respect. Mutual negotiations and helping mentality were the highlights of my team. Effective Communication skill was a key factor of my success as a leader, as I could listen to the team carefully and put their ideas into action quickly. My leadership skills and the team’s hard work was honored as Coolex, the brand launched dominated the water purification market followed by the introduction of other products such as Freon-free refrigerator and air cleaner under the same brand. Inspiring the team with a new vision and achieving this vision by leveraging team competence could make a far-reaching impact on the company. The top executives turned passionate about the business philosophy of balancing social and commercial returns. This led to the launch of a series of investments including solar technology from China. The development while ensuring the business causes of the company, encouraged the social answerability of both the countries as well. Looking forward, what skills are you most eager to build or improve upon in business school? 500words The need of hard work to chase a passion was reiterated through the hard experience I had while learning piano. Carried over by the mesmerising effect of the art, I developed a desire to learn piano. I got encouraged by my parents as they bought me a piano and sent me to piano classes every week To chase my dream was not easy as the classes cost me long time and exerted pressure on me to work hard. The time factor and the work pressure killed my patience and I started to negotiate my practice hours with my play time. I even lied to my parents when I bunked classes to play with my friends. Later when my parents found it, they didn’t blame me but asserted that it was most honourable to achieve success with honest hard work. Though this could add in me the ethics of being true and honest, the desire to work hard towards the goal couldn’t be ignited in me. Though, I went back to practice, it was just as boring as before. The decisive factor which catalysed my determination to strive hard against hardships was a piano performance by the daughter of my piano master. It was a welcome home performance for her after getting trained from Hungary as a professional artist. The mesmerising gush of music lingered in the air to touch the hearts of the audience. The spectators including me had their eyes wet when the show finished. I sincerely understood how one’s accomplishment could positively affect others life. The desire in me to develop an influential talent in music was accelerated on this realization. This inspiration led me through the hard work which followed. Boredom and laziness couldn’t stop me from there on. After long years of relentless efforts I could prove myself to be a good musician as I had several prize winning performances. My deliverance could finally touch other’s heart. Seeing the audience moved into tears by my music, I realized that bringing joy to people through diligent, honest work is the most amazing achievement in the world. Meanwhile, I understood that honest hard work always deserved the most honourable rewards. The experience cultivated patience and perseverance in my methodology of work. These qualities helped me a lot in my academic study and professional ventures, especially in business, which is most complex and ever-changing. Working through long sessions of piano practice, I could also establish the capability to learn fast, which enabled me to evaluate a business scenario within no time. I could utilise to the fullest my capacity to influence others resulting in efficient cohesive teams. However I lacked the managerial efficacy to integrate these skills in the work environment.
