Education the new form of Segregation Education the new form of Segregation American society has long struggled to maintain equality in the mainstream. Employment, education, social institutions, housing areas, and association are all barometers that help evaluate how best minorities are included in the mainstream. Blow in his article “a future segregated by Science?” suggests that there is a new emerging parameter under which the American society is being divided based on science and STEM-based education and employment.

Summary Of The Article Blow writes about the apparent lack of interest and encouragement of STEM and science oriented programs to black children in America. The notion is reinforced by statistical evaluation of how prestigious colleges and companies turn down African American school requests and employment applications (Blow, 2015). The interesting allegory of the article is that the writer suggests that he had qualified for a presentation in a science-based fair in high school only for the airline to lose his exhibition.

The notion is very symbolic since most African American children have no proper mechanisms to enlighten them on the need and importance to pursue science and STEM-based careers. Factors such as stereotypes, lack of information, and discouragement are determinants for the low uptake of science-based education in minorities. Blow carefully crafts his argument to state that the future of America will be divided along science and STEM-based education and professions as opposed to inequality by race and gender.

Assessment of the Argument and Critique The author directs our attention to the development and progress of historical injustices such as economic disenfranchisement of the African Americans. The article seems to present irrefutable facts such as the chronology of the growth of the STEM jobs in the coming decade (Blow, 2015). The projection of the growth of STEM jobs seems to be more impending than non-STEM jobs. The main strength of the article is the statistical evidence presented by the writer.

Blow systematically explored the data presented from credible institutions such as the national math and science initiative and the USA today. He assesses the admission and interest that black and monitories have in STEM-related courses and subjects. The research in the article, for instance, shows that the black population receives about 7% of all STEM-related bachelor’s degrees and even lower number of these professions gets hired (Blow, 2015). About 6% blacks and other minorities such as Hispanics hold STEM jobs in most of the prestigious companies and leading institutions.

The weakness in the article is that the argument of the author fails to offer a solution on how best to improve on diversity in the workplace. Further, Blow compares gainful employment to access the achievements of the black race and other minorities. The comparison with the white represents a skewed analysis due to nature under which some of these children grow up. African American children might fail to understand the importance of STEM-based degrees since their application and use is not properly responsive to community needs as opposed to non-STEM degrees.

Conclusion The argument in the article states that minorities are underprivileged and thus misunderstand importance to get engaged in science-based education. They are further locked out of a better chance of being included in the mainstream. Instead, stereotypes and economic status has currently locked out and will continue to do so in the future African Americans and minorities from well-paying jobs and an admission into the mainstream American society.
