Education Assignment Questions: Module 4 Question There are two forms of legitimate power, formal and informal The two types ofpower, formal and informal are different even if they are both legitimate. Formal power takes place in organizations with organizational hierarchies. For example, such companies have organizational charts where all members get ranked according to their status and responsibility. Hence, the power excised because there is recognition of job titles and ranks. Informal takes place in organizations where leaders lead, but have no job titles or status (Hellriegel & Slocum, 2008).

In such as organization, there are no ranks distinguishing the staff members. In my school, there is a formal type of legitimate power exercised because there is a chain of command that we follow. For example, on top of the school organizational chart, there is the school board of directors, followed by the School administrator and the list continues to the last staff members who are janitors and security guards.Question 2: There are two forms of illegitimate power, coercive and politicalCoercive power refers to the type of power exercised by using force or issuing of threats (Chapter 6 Power Point, 2015).

It is illegitimate because there is use of force. Political power refers to the type of power used to control or influence a group of people. Unlike coercive power where there is use of force, political power has leaders who use their resources or knowledge to change the behavior of people. In the North Independent school district political power is mainly used to influence parents to take their children to schools located in this school district.Question 3: Which two strategies do you plan to use in your career to enhance authority I plan to use supportive leadership, emotional detachment and authenticity to enhance authority as a future leader.

Exercising supportive leadership is useful because it focuses on helping the followers or employees under my authority (Chapter 6 Power Point, 2015). As a leader practicing authenticity, I will provide the employees with an excellent example of what it means to accept individual responsibilities for my actions. Lastly, I will ensure that I am emotionally detached when it comes to dealing with organizational affairs.Question 4: Why would expert power be the most stable source of power?Expert power is the most stable since the leaders get the knowledge regarding organizational affairs based on the experts’ knowledge.

It is useful because the leaders do not dwell on rumors and their own assumptions to make decisions regarding organizational affairs.Question 5: Why would referent power be considered the strongest source of power?Referent power is the strongest because leaders do not exert their power by making followers fearful of them (Chapter 6 Power Point, 2015). Instead, they get followers to respect and admire them. For example, leaders exerting coercive power get feared but not necessarily respected. Leaders practicing legitimate power may have the power, but it does not mean that they are admired or respected by followers.

Question 6: Why would legitimate and reward power most likely promote a simple compliance? As mentioned in the previous answer to question 5, leaders practicing legitimate power have total control of the organization because they are the most powerful. Since they are the most people employees will comply with all the rules to avoid problems. Leaders exerting reward power are also likely to have compliant followers since they reward them when they exhibit desirable behavior (Bertocci, 2009).Question 7: Why would coercive power most likely produce resistance and alienation?

Followers are likely to feel alienated and become resistant because they are under a leader who practices coercive power for several reasons. One, the leader punishes them for behavior that he or she finds undesirable. Followers resists because they get forced to do tasks or behave in a way in which they do not want.Question 8: Why would reward power be easily confused with coercive power? In situations where there is reward power, the leader focuses on rewarding desirable behavior (Bertocci, 2009).

However, when it comes to organizations that practice coercive power, the leader punishes employees for undesirable behavior. One is likely to confuse the two types of power because there are rewards given in each.Question 9: Why are politics harmful to the organization?Politics are part of every organization. However, they are harmful because they distract workers from their assigned jobs. Discussion of politics is often a topic that some people talk about passionately. In the event that two employees disagree over political opinions, feuds emerge hurting everyone in the organization.

Question 10: How are external and internal political coalitions different?External coalitions influence an organization even when they are external parties of an organization such as tax payers and citizens (Hellriegel & Slocum, 2008). Internal coalitions have an impact on the organization since they have an impact on it from inside. Question 11: Example of a political tactic observedA while back while on an internship program in New York, I observed that climbing up the career ladder takes more than just having good papers.

I was only an intern, but noted that some of the supervisors in the organization were former interns in the same organization. Hence, I realized that having a networking influential is critical because it allows a person to gain access information that is helpful in advancing career positions through influential people.Question 12: Situation where it would be best to use a collaborating conflict management styleThis type of management style is most useful in situations where the team members in the organization can collaborate with each other to make policies.

It is also useful in situations where creative-problem solving tactics are necessary.Question 13: Situation where it would be best to use a compromising conflict management style The compromising conflict management style is only effective in situations where the leader and followers are assertive. The followers have to show they are a cooperative group without the need for supervision. Both sides have to ensure they are willing to give up something to come to terms with each other.Question 14: Situation where it would be best to use an accommodating conflict management style This style of management is only useful when one party feels outmatched in regard to the power.

The powerful party must also be presenting stiff competition for the accommodating party to feel overwhelmed.ReferencesBertocci, D. (2009).
