Personal ment A We live in a world where all areas of employment continuously makes bigger and higher demands in relation to continued education and intellectual growth in order to stay ahead of the competition and bring a greater relevance to the reason why your current employer should keep you employed. It is important that as an employee, a person be able to show that he is indispensable to the daily functions of a company by constantly honing his skills in relation to his field of employment. However, the cut throat that we live in does not allow for much time during the day for a dedicated employee to harness his educational opportunities in relation to his work skills. I am one of those employees. It was only by chance that I came across the Master of Science in Public Affairs program of the University of Massachusetts in Boston. For me, discovery of this masters program offering night-time classes was a gift from the universe because it will allow me to perfectly schedule my day and night time hours in order to pursue this much needed educational degree. Thanks to the short turn completion time , I can get my degree in 18 months instead of longer, I will be able to fast track my higher education while never skipping a beat at the office. Having worked for Anhauser - Busch in the past on their contemporary marketing team, then as a product merchandiser, before moving on to working for the state lottery as a sales representative, I am quite familiar with the need to perfectly balance my work, education, and personal time. Since the MSPA program will concentrate mostly on weekend classes and some weekend seminars, I am definite that the course load will never become too much for me to handle. Personal Quality Statement When I decided to pursue a masters degree in Public Affairs, I told myself that the one thing I would not do is sit down to write a personal statement that would misrepresent myself. I am not going to do that because misrepresenting myself will not be beneficial to me should I be accepted into the program because I would have set myself up to fail due to the unreasonably high image that I would have created for myself just to get into the program. Instead, I am coming to you to present myself as a simple person, hoping to be awarded a slot in the MSPA program of your much admired academic institution. I began my career far away from the current field that I am working in as a State Lottery employee. During my younger days, I prided myself in being one of the most sought after DJs in the state. I made my money that way. Being paid to party and helping people to set up fantastic parties based upon their music play list. I was even connected with the school radio station during my college years because of my excellent ability to book the right people as guests on radio talk shows and developing even more interesting discussions for the on air jockeys to discuss with their callers and guests. Even then I knew that I wanted to be more than just a turntable spinner, I did not want to spend my life working for the radio stations either. These jobs were merely stints that represented a means towards an end. Then I somehow found myself hosting local shows and writing articles for the local newspaper. The highlight of this mass media college career of mine had to be when I anchored a segment interviewing the university president David Sergent. As I continued to grow within the field, I also began to produce and direct content of my own. I believe that it was during this particular point in time that my desire to enter public service gained a strong foothold in my conscience. All the work that I had been doing before seemed to all lead up to this point, of seeing the hard realities of life and knowing that I was powerless to help these people who needed to be reached out to. I made a vow to myself then that I would eventually do what I could for them in the best capacity that I could when the time came. After getting out of college, I still had the vow that I made in my mind. I knew that I needed to change my image if I were ever to be taken seriously in the world of public service. So I set out to become a professional who would eventually be able to fulfill the silent vow that he made to the masses. Coming out of college, I found myself applying for and then eventually working for the Anhauser - Busch company. I started out in production distribution, eventually working my way to the contemporary marketing team as an AB-Inbev brand ambassador responsible for product promotion. Eventually, I became a product merchandiser. This was a part of my employment at AB-Inbev that I enjoyed the most because it allowed me to travel to various parts of the country and interact with people. I was the middle man between the company and the retailer, it was a dream job that allowed me to do what I always desired, help resolve issues. This job also reminded me of the vow I had made to give back to my community eventually as I roamed the state and mingled with the simple people of the state. It was also during this time that I realized that I was gaining the right kind of experience for the wrong kind of job. I was enjoying myself so much on the job and earning money that I did not even realize that I was slowly losing sight of the vow that I had made to help others. So I found myself at a crossroad. Do I continue down this easy path of assured income and career growth, or do I go out there and take a chance on myself? I would lose the grand life but I would perhaps regain my sense of self worth and give more value to my word by changing my career path towards a job that would help me achieve my end goal. That of helping other people. I decided to take the path of personal growth rather than career stability. That is how I ended up working for the Massachusetts State Lottery as a sales representative. Yes, it is not a highly impressionable position and no, I do not make the same money as I previously did. But working for them was a matter of fulfilling my vow to help others. Since the lottery also has charitable affiliations that I am slowly becoming familiar with, I feel that I am doing more than just helping them achieve their goal of $5 Billion in ticket sales. I feel like I am actually and finally able to give back to the community somehow. As I continue with my sales representative work at the state lottery, I continue to travel throughout the state and mingle with other people. Some of whom come to the lottery with the hopes and dreams of being able to achieve a change in their lives. There are the destitute kinds and those who simply wish to add to their savings. Whatever the reason, the state lottery is doing its best to help them either by awarding cash prizes, or doing charitable work for the benefit of the underprivileged. It is because of my work at the state lottery, my interaction with people from all walks of life, and my personal vow to help those in need that I came to the realization that I would only be a happy and fulfilled person if I finally worked in the Public Sector. I need to learn how I can utilize all of this know-how for their benefit. That is why I want to pursue my masters degree in Public Service. I already know how I can effect change in the lives of these people. That is by becoming a part of the local government. I know that I have a long way to go before I can become a person of influence in the local government but I am willing to go the distance in order to help others. It all starts with the MSPA degree for me. I once heard someone say that we should not pass through this life without having been an instrument of change. It is my greatest hope that I will be able to do just that within the state of Massachusetts. It is more than just leaving a legacy that other people will remember me by. I do not care for accolades nor applause. I simply want to be able to fulfill the silent vow that I made in the past to help those in need. I hope that your kind academic institution will help me achieve that. Read More
