The predominant thing about human psychology is that it tends to learn new things and concepts through contrast and comparison. People appreciate summers, because they know what winter is. People appreciate the day because they know what it means to be dark. It is not possible for a person to appreciate a concept or thing, unless one is not conversant with its opposite.

The appreciation and understanding of opposites brings in an element of symmetry and balance. Hence, a person can only appreciate health and would strive to maintain a good health only if one has experienced sickness and actually knows what it means to be sick. It is the dread and fear of sickness that moves a person to think about and strive for good health. Thereby, sickness and health are the two sides of the same coin and both cannot exist without each other. It is the sickness either perceived or experienced that actually makes people appreciate health and well being.
