Managing money has proved difficult for a lot of people especially teenagers; as a result, a lot of them end up engaging in drug taking activities and alcohol consumption. Poor money management may also culminate in wrong life decisions which frustrate people culminating in suicide decisions. Poor money management has also been blamed on the increasing cases of divorce and marital separations in society. Many have argued that suicide, the use of antidepressants, and divorce rates are all on the climb due to the education system’s failure to educate our young adults in the art of proper personal money management. However, the education system cannot be blamed entirely for this improper mismanagement of personal money, since improper money management is a personal decision. Besides, there are many institutions that should guide an individual on proper time management. This paper analyses how improper money management has affected youths adversely, and what has caused this. The educational system and the interplay of many factors have contributed to these rising cases. These factors include; lack of parental guidance, dysfunctional family units and the economy of the nation. All in all, many cultures view taking one’s own life as improper and unjustified. Suicide is a culmination of life frustrations and suffering, whereby, an individual opts to take his/ her life so as to avoid these frustrations. Can this be attributed to improper money management solely? The answer is no. It is true that improper mismanagement of money in the society has led to these individuals opting to commit suicide but still life is a struggle, and by missing money does not mean that one should opt for suicide. The educational system mould individuals to be noteworthy managers of time and resources. However, much of this emphasis on money management comes later in life. It is rare for schools to teach pupils in elementary and high school on money management since these students are far from earning. Much of the emphasis is during college and university life. Depending on the individual, this may be sufficient or insufficient in molding life decisions. The educational system has changed very much, in that students are completing school young and most of these students are thrown into the world as young and inexperienced people. They end up earning good salaries, but, due to their inexperience, they spend it unwisely and do not make wise life decisions. This can be blamed on the educational system. Back then, students would complete school fairly older, and this ensured that they had a sense of maturity going into the outside world. These students would be able to handle the rigors and demands of the post-school life, and this ensured that they would be able to spend their money wisely. When young people are introduced to this harsh environment, this trend changes. The current youth operate on peer influence, and it is few who make decisions on their own. Such young people do not spend their money wisely, and since they are far away from their parents, guardians or older siblings, they end up living large, leaving little for investments. The workplace environment is getting so competitive, and once someone loses out, it becomes difficult. Business managers are also going for experience instead of the fresh college graduates. Therefore, the world is full of so many college graduates who are seeking employment, and with their inexperience, they are unable to cope up in life. Even those who get some money, their inexperience ensures that they have not done much. This is becoming one of the greatest causes of depression in these young people. Most of them lack guidance and a sense of direction in life. This depression may become so massive that one opts to commit suicide. Day after day, we are hearing of young people to commit suicide, and while we are fast to point an accusing finger at their foolishness, the educational system has really contributed a great deal. The education system need to be altered in such a way that proper resource management is emphasized from early years so that, when a young adult is faced with difficulties in life, they are able to soldier on and look forward for a better tomorrow. Every successful person is so due to the influence of the education system. It is the education system that teaches you to be hardworking, resilient, courteous, focused, and many more virtues. Therefore, the education system can either make you or break you. Therefore, the financial mismanagement that is characteristic of so many youths today can be blamed on the education system. Research has shown that; students who reside in schools during their educational years are better time and money managers as compared to those who reside at home in their education years. Living in a school environment that has several rules to abide by shapes one in various aspects. One grows up into an adult who is able to follow rules and who is able to use the little resources available in the school setting. However, when a student operates from a home environment, it is highly likely that he/she will not be shaped by teachers as he/she operates with the freedom. Some institutions are strict in the sense they regulate the amount of money that a student can have in school, hence, these students get used to operate with minimal resources. What is the way forward then? The educational system needs to introduce financial management aspects in its syllabi, and also, schools need to teach children about learning to live with minimal resources. This is going to assist them in future so that they do not get frustrated when they go broke or when they have minimal financial sources. This is going to reduce the number and incidence of depression in times of financial strain or when one is frustrated as a result of not having enough money. Influence of Other Factors However, changing this trend requires the interplay of many factors. The increasing divorce rates, depression instances and suicide attempts by young people are not only the fault of our education system. People commit suicide for a variety of causes; people get depressed for a variety of causes and divorce rates occur for a variety of causes. While money is the trigger of frustrations in life, there are many more factors that may frustrate someone. Even the rich commit suicide; even the wealthy file divorce; even the mighty get depressed. All these can happen whether one was taught to manage money or not. Take an example of depression and suicide. A person may have enough financial sources, but, may be frustrated for a variety of reasons; one may be jilted in love, one may not be attaining the correct grades academically, one may be diagnosed with a serious illness or one may lose a loved one in death. All these situations stress someone, and may culminate in suicide. Therefore, one may be taught about money management well, gets a job, manages money wisely, but these factors may induce depression in the person. Marriage is supposed to unite people for the rest of their lives, but when two marry, society expects them to separate one way or the other. It is a common occurrence. Divorce is triggered by many factors. It is true that financial hardships may trigger separation. However, divorce is caused by very many causes ranging from marital infidelity and other irreconcilable differences between couples. Therefore, the soaring cases of divorce rates cannot be blamed entirely on failure of the education system to teach students on money management. Conclusion The soaring levels of divorce, depression and suicide can be blamed on the education system not teaching students adequately on proper resource management. However, these three key issues in society are also caused by other factors apart from money mismanagement. The concerned institutions also have a role to play in halting the progression of these cases.
