Imperfection in a Wax Casting Design - Essay Example

Student Name: Tutor: Title: Imperfection Course: Title I am developing wax casting design of a ring with a rough surface inside to signify beauty of imperfection in art. Outline I am interested doing wax casting for my imperfection project. This is because I thought that it would be fun and wax casting will provide the best result for texture and pattern. In my process of ring, I have tried use the soft pink wax sheet to do my ring, but when I tried to make it, the pink wax is too soft and thin; it was really fragile and easy to broken. This is some example, that I practiced doing the ring. I made two ring twisted, and one of ring is unsymmetrical. Therefore, I considered using the hard wax is a good choice. In this ring, I designed in two ways. One of the sides is smooth and the other side is rough. The rough side will be such as rock. I want to make it have a sharp contrast. It highlights certain parts in my ring of imperfection and makes it stand out. For my rough side design, I am going to do it like unsymmetrical, random, and create some missing parts of my ring. The rock of rough side, I will try to make it three dimensional. When people wear my ring, they can feel it the roughness is how special of it. The roughness of my ring is the main attraction, I designed uneven and bumpy and tried to make some hole inside and outside. When I finish the wax mould, I will do the wax casting. And next step, I will use a drill to make a hole, use a wire or thread to tie together. I look forward to Making an interesting design. Theoretical background The concept of imperfection is centered in the sense that nothing is finished, nothing last, and nothing is perfect. The concept of imperfection has grown more essential over the last a hundred years. Directly collated to technology advances, it is the capabilities that technologies offer in making it to draw closer to ideal, perfect form challenging what constitutes beauty (Pacteau, 2013). We all have plenty of defects and whenever we try hiding those defects we end up with abstract beauty that is characterized by emptiness. Imperfection can be seen through spheres of life including music, poetry, architecture and art. Originality and uniqueness is emphasized through imperfection to bring close the reality of life in art work. Imperfection gives an artist the leeway to express himself confidently and uniquely without the fear of failure or criticism. To make the distinction between an object and the object’s representation, emphasis is drawn to the fact that beauty is embedded in the relationship between the object and the viewer (Perlovsky, 2010). Consequently, the judgement of beauty is manifested in how the representation makes us feel. It does not matter whether the object’s representation offers empirical knowledge but the manner in which it offers intuitive experience. The viewer makes a disinterested view that is non-conceptual in making a judgement of pure beauty. The mentality of aesthetic judgement made via sensory and moral concepts has been contested predominantly since it is not possible to conceive something outside conceptualization or visualize that the desire we get from something can be present independently without trying comprehending it (Ford, 2012). An explanation for an imperfect aesthetic lies in its appeal as authentic, truer to life as opposed to being an ideal form. There are several artists who inspired me to come up with the ring proposal project. I draw a lot of inspiration from Karl Fritsch and his art work. Fritsch focuses on making rings, although he usually makes pieces of jewelry and objects. He inspired the idea of my ring project. His rings are beautiful in an imperfect way (Hagman, 2011). His works focus on rough finishes. Despite their rugged look they present a precious view at the same time. He uses precious material like silver, gold and niello as well as semi-precious stones. He also makes use of materials that are less precious like screws and nails especially in his early work. Something that comes out as pretty and cute can be almost obscene grotesqueness at a second glance (Hanley, 2013). In some of his work, finger prints can be seen, the use of oxidized silver, mixing high and low materials. He also lost wax casting, fouling materials in making his jewelry. Fritsch does not have standard rings, most of the rings forming his design are random and with asymmetric structure. He gave me a lot of inspiration for by ring project. Johanna Dahm grew up in South Africa and spent time studying in the United States. Johanna has experimented with different methods and techniques. For example, this is her new rings which feature ' raw ' diamonds. The stones have not been cut and polished and are even black in colour. I like her design because it has another interesting twist; they are hollow form rings that are based on ancient metal casting methods (Ford, 2012). I like other ring of used the wire to surround. And the surface which is broken little bit. It looks so natural. I draw a lot of inspiration from his designs. Gaetano Pesce brings about a new concept of beauty by valuing imperfection. Gaetano creates on the basis of observing the contemporary. He goes ahead to invert the fundamental idea of design to create on the basis of a product as opposed to a solution. The designer finds the creativity on the streets as well as in the elements of his routine hence providing a breath of fresh air to his own art. Through oxygenation the art takes new forms. Gaetano uses materials that are similar to plastic in his creation (Hanley, 2013). I was inspired by simplicity of his ideas that engraves the whole concept of imperfection in art work. His art work out spontaneously and in a unique way. Gaetano manifests his continuous search for change through bringing the public into the creative process. He sets various inspirations that can go beyond the limits within small transformations in my routine and in my daily work. Trained as an architect, Gaetano, has continued to produce antidesign statements within rubberized Technicolor (Gokmen, 2013). Gaetano has embraced imperfection that is emboldened through the beauty of art. Imperfection emphasizes reality and resonates with the times of the art creation. Gaetano was among the first designers to transcend the iceberg of Modernism within the 1960s with functional art hence radicalizing production in order for objects not to come off the assembly line cold and standardized, but warm and imperfect. Poured prior to gelling, liquid resins, have a softness and elasticity that suit a historical moment valuing continuous change (Jedlińska, 2011). New things usually provoke people to think hence the importance of innovation. Struggling to be perfect kills the reality of art. Practical Aspects First of all, after Andrew helps us to cut the piece of ring wax, my first step is cut away any material that I know I won't need. The idea of this step is to get rid of extra wax as quickly as possible. Then, I need to give myself an idea where I need to carve. I will use dividers to mark the wax and mark the centre and the edge of the sides. This will help me to achieve precision of a carving. During this process I also require some patience. However, my ring requires no symmetrical carving and I just eyeballed to carving my ring. After that, It will be my fun part for me. I used a coarse file and I began to taking out the wax from the boxy shape. I try to cut away corners and to round out edges. In this step, I spent a long time because it is where the ring begins to transform to circle. It also created lots of little shavings that look like blue snow. Sometimes, these little snowflakes often stick on my fingers. And I am really absorbed in my work. Next, I am going to add texture. I used a ball bur and the carving tools to cut away a little bit, and created some texture that is uneven, and roughness. The ball bur is capable of taking off a large amount of wax, so I worked it slowly and careful to get the texture just right. For example, I tried to make a hole (inside and outside) of my ring. Finally, when the wax model starts to look more like the design that I want, I try to do the other smooth part. I used the sand paper of 400 grit paper followed by 600 grit. I want to the result of very smooth to the touch. Therefore, I was very careful not to put too much pressure on the ring. After finished, I am very satisfied with my work. And I am look forward to the results of doing wax casting.
