Acquiring Effective Writing Skills
Acquiring effective writing skills is a very complicated process because the progress is hardly distinguishable. It seems that having an ability to simply write a text is enough for becoming an adept in writing; however, the more you study the more you understand that creating the right text is what requires years of practice, well-developed logical thinking, and attention. During the year I faced some problems in writing I could not even imagine earlier and I also started asking myself a lot of questions regarding this skill. How can the author capture reader`s attention in the beginning and keep it further? How to make the text coherent which means how to connect parts of the text, arguments, and ideas smoothly? How to make the text readable and understandable? All these questions made me realize that I have certain gaps of knowledge connected to the lack of practice in writing. It inspired me to learn more which in my case means to write more and to ass more critically my work.
Nevertheless, I have learnt some really useful things with the help of this course. As I have mentioned I had problems with starting the text. Sometimes the introduction looked completely irrelevant to the whole text; sometimes it was too lengthy and not capturing. I also often used general statements or repeated some ideas not to make a mistake. However, later I have learnt that in order to create a good, even brilliant introduction it is necessary to have a body. So literally I figured out that introduction has to be written in the end but this is the observation that helps me only.
Structuring thoughts in a logical manner was another serious obstacle for me. Despite the fact that my first essays seemed bright and saturated with ideas, the form itself was messy, and it was impossible to capture the logic of the narration. However, with the help of this class I have learnt to stick to traditional model of essay composition, and realized that structure is like a skeleton of the text so it needs to be exceptionally strong.
Among the valuable things I have understood during the whole course was that self-organization does matter. Creating texts is the process which is impossible to predict. Sometimes it takes hours to find relevant sources, sometimes bright arguments appear out of nowhere. Procrastination and inability to focus on the thesis of text makes it “empty” and turns the whole process of writing into a burden. In order to keep the track of the thought I have learnt to reread constantly what was written and fix it in the process not after finalization. Moreover, I realized how important editing is because it often seems that the essay is immaculate but reading it two or three times allows seeing it from another perspective.
I have understood that I imagined writing in a completely different way before as for me it was a process totally dependent on inspiration. If the Muse has visited you - there is a chance of writing a brilliant text. Nevertheless, it turned out that only in the process of analysis of arguments, structuring, and correcting your own thoughts it is possible to get any inspiration. Read More

...that the entire concept of rote learning is unsuited towards advancing students along the lines of high level thinking and the assimilation of good research and writing skills. In my schooling thus far, I have been in a lot of classes where the students had to memorize information, but comparatively few where students also have to actually apply the information. I was pleased that this course focused so much on intensive writing projects, because I felt I was applying what I was learning. This is the first step towards remembering the information for later use. I also learned a lot in this course about an appropriate voice, as mentioned above, and style. When I first started the...
