 The Role Of Playing for Children Prompt 1: Stepping into an office you will see a team effort being put forth by all employees. These employees are working to make money and keep their staff alive and prosperous. If they didn’t work as a team or didn’t obey the rules they could get fired from their position. I believe that activities that children play at a younger age will help them develop in the future and in the business world. Playing football for my high school team was one of the most fun times I have had in my life and taught my how important it was to work as a team and not as an individual unit. There were 15 guys and we all had to have one game plan rather than each of us wanting different things. Although we were young and didn’t want to follow orders from one person we knew that it was the right thing to do. We had a leader and knew that respecting him was important to our success as a group. If we each chose our own path and didn’t listen to our coach we would fail and therefore let down a group of 14 guys who all listened to the coach. We didn’t always agree with our coach or think he was making the best decisions but we had to trust that he knew what he was doing and making the best decisions for our team. There was no room for joking around when we were practicing and this taught us to be mature and serious when we had goals to accomplish. We also believed in each other and our potential if we practiced hard and went over plays until they seemed to run as smoothly as possible. We put in extra time after dark to make sure that when we played in the big game Friday night we wouldn’t mess up that play. Down the road in a work environment there will be a boss who wants you to be a team player and be willing to put in the extra time, just like that football team. Just from playing football in high school there was a value instilled in me to play as team and know who leads and to respect that person. You cannot always take charge and run everything but in time if you do a good job in your position you have the opportunity to move up into higher positions. I fully believe that having kids in sports will help them to succeed later in life. Prompt 2: There is obviously debate on whether children receive better care if their parents work during the day or not and how this attention or lack of attention changes the child. A child may react in different ways to getting more attention and may get to be more involved with their parents staying at home with them. Many parents have a tough decision to make when they have to choose if a single income will be enough to support their family but I believe that without a parent home for the child, they miss out on important social activities and crucial time with their parents. My mother stayed at home with my brother and I while we were growing up and I believe that is was beneficial to my growth as a child. I was able to be in social groups and get rides to friend’s houses in the summer while some of my friends were in day care. Later when we were older my friends whose parents were not home complained that they didn’t get to participate as much as I did and that they wish they had. They were unhappy with where they had to go and wished they could have had more say in the decisions that had been made. Early on it was the parent’s decision for everything where as I had some say in the things I did after school. I was able to be at sports practices and go to summer camps because my parents were available to make the commute from one place to another. Whenever I came home from school I knew that my mom would be there to help me with my homework or take me to sports practice and I always felt like I was very involved. I know several friends of mine stayed in day care for years and were not able to come home from school and have the chance to go to sports practice because their parents had taken the train and got home too late. They were angry that their parents weren’t there and that they couldn’t participate in the same activities that I did. I know that my development as a child was supported by my parent’s availability and my mother staying home from work. I feel that I got to have a lot of extra time to work on homework because my mother always made that a priority and made sure that it was done well and to the teachers expectations. My friends who went to daycare got picked up around dinnertime and their parents were tired and seemed to lack interest in what their kids had done that day at school. Being that my mom was involved in my homework she could see where I might need some extra help and encouragement and knew when I had a test coming so that we could prepare for it. I am firm belief that a parent should be home for their children when they arrive from school. I feel that without my mother being home I was able to attend sporting practices and get rides to friends houses to participate in more social activities. It also gave me extra time to work on homework and spend more time with my family. Prompt 3: When our children come home from school they tend to sit in front of a television or computer screen for hours doing mindless activities. They seem to have time to waste and spend doing mindless activities or possibly getting into trouble. Kids need to understand that there are other people who are not as fortunate as they are and do not have homes to go to and cannot afford to go to school because their parents need them to work. Why not implement a mandatory amount of volunteer work for high school students to give them a chance to reach out to the community and contribute some positive work. When kids sit in front of a television they are gaining so little information. They are not expanding their knowledge or using their creative abilities. These television programs may be violent or have profane language and are a waste to their minds. If we let them have a mindset that they have nothing better to do than watch television, we are instilling a horrible work ethic for their future. I believe these children have a lot to gain from their community and need to expand their horizons. Their lives are pretty simple at their age and they need to know that when they are out on their own things will not be as easy or laid out for them. Sometimes things don’t go the way we want them to and working hard is essential to becoming successful. We need to expose these children to kids who are not as fortunate as they are and show them families that struggle to stay afloat. Our children need to know that our community needs the help of others to make things successful and if we want to keep the grass green and litter in the trash we also need volunteers to help. We should mandate that children in high school volunteer at least 50 hours of their time to the community. We need these children to understand humanitarian acts and how the world cannot survive with closed minded kids. If we do not teach the children a responsibility such as this they may never learn. It is the responsibility of the parents and schools to make this happen. We need to get children out of the front of televisions and away from computer games for a few hours a week to pitch in to local efforts. Extra hands in the community will benefit the town and also the students, even if they are initially upset that they have to do volunteer work. 4: Dear Child, I am writing to tell you that there were two very important things to your childhood that led you to the person you are now. One of them is eating organic food which I believe is essential in promoting health in young children. Child, you know how many times other children were sick around you and how you stayed healthy and this was because of your diet. You had chocolate and some fast food but you also put positive nutritious things into it which helped your immune system to grow strong. I also believe it is important that you limit the amount of violent television you are exposed to because of the nature of the verbiage spoken by the actors. I also believe that is important not to watch very aggressive television or more than an hour a day of television. I believe your mind needs to grow creatively and that to do that you need to stimulate it with activities both outdoors and indoors. Read and play games that stimulate your brain and make it think rather than glaring at a television screen that fills your mind with violence and toys that companies want you to think you need. Obviously it is hard to understand at a young age why I think these things are so important to you and your well being but I think if you look at the details you will better understand what I am telling you. If you put positive things into your mind and body they will turn into better things as you grow. B: To Dr. Martin, Being that you are our children’s pediatrician I would like you to look into the benefits of organic food and its effect on the growth and nutrition of children. I believe that it has many positive benefits and I would like to see more preaching of this to other parents as well as children. Also I was hoping that you would be more of an advocate for the removal of violent television for children because of the affects it has on kids. It is my opinion that they hear and see bad things and then replicate them in public settings. . I know you have said in the past that our children were very healthy but I wonder if you believe that it is because of what we feed our children. Is their any sort of testing we can compare to other children to see levels of nutrition they have compared to our children? I believe firmly in putting healthy food into my children and do not want them exposed to chemicals often sprayed on fruits and vegetables. Is their a magazine or articles you could post around the office so that my children will be able to see that I am not the only one who feels this way?
