APA Podcast Citation – Everything You Need to Know

Students all around the World turn to podcasts as a source of input. However, are they allowed to do that in academic research? The answer is yes, as long as students can stick to reliable, respected, and trustworthy sources.

Podcasts have been officially acknowledged as possible sources of information that may come in handy in academic research. The reason is that they are not just movie reviews or dramas anymore. They are popular tools to deliver verifiable facts and theories used by academics and experts in their fields. Some of them are discussions around burning issues that may provide fresh insights and opinions of experts on the matter, while others are audio recordings of academic lectures.

Using podcasts that meet the same criteria as literature has extra benefits for students. For instance, this shows their research has taken them further than the standard texts. Plus, it may enrich papers with some original points and facts. This may earn extra scores and take the final grade to the top.

The best part is that APA podcast citation is not difficult to introduce in your academic paper. Just implement the basic rules and pay attention to nuances. Let us consider them a bit closer.

Essential Rules for Citing a Podcast APA Style

Citing a podcast APA style correctly depends on the type of source: it can be one episode, an entire series, and a video. However, the structure of podcast APA citation remains the same:

  • First, feature the host by mentioning their last name and initials.
  • Second, feature the date including the year, month, and day.
  • Third feature name of the episode and its number.
  • Fourth, feature the podcast name.
  • Fifth, feature production company details.
  • Finally, feature direct URL.

As for the format of APA podcast citation, follow these rules and consider these tiny nuances:

  • Use a standard 12-pt font family.
  • Add spaces, ident, and margins.
  • If the URL of the podcast is unknown because you listen to it through the application, you are allowed to omit it.
  • If you cannot define the number of the episode, you are allowed to omit it.
  • Feature type of podcast (audio or video) in square brackets right after mentioning title and number of episodes.
  • Use timestamp from the start of the part you want to cite.
  • If you refer to the whole series, you may feature executive producers instead of authors.
  • List a range of years if the show runs more than 12 months.

As for video podcasts, follow the same format and tips, with a tiny exception. The citation should clarify its origin by featuring “Video podcast” instead of “Audio podcast.”
