Introduction
The municipality of Abu Dhabi has played a great role in developing all sectors in Abu Dhabi. It has continuously worked towards developing the entire city. The municipality of Abu Dhabi has involved in establishment of various amenities. It has developed better road systems and excellent infrastructure within the city. The municipality of Abu Dhabi has also developed one of the world’s best bridges and sanitation systems. It aims at making Abu Dhabi the world’s major capital city. The municipality believes in providing excellent municipal services to its citizens. Abu Dhabi municipality has various work teams. Each team works towards attaining the municipality’s objectives. This paper therefore aims at evaluate a work team in Abu Dhabi municipality.
Overview of the Work team in Abu Dhabi municipality
Abu Dhabi municipality has various work groups. Each group has unique responsibilities. The responsibilities however converge at attaining the objectivities of the municipality. Personally, I am a member of one of the work group in Abu Dhabi municipality. The type of the work group is a task group or task facilitation group. It has twelve members who are highly knowledgeable on matters relating to municipality services provision. The group has various functions, which include, monitoring the corrective action of the organization, auditing on services complains and monitoring performance. Therefore, the group serves three main purposes, which are meeting the needs of clients, meeting the needs of the community and meeting the needs of the organization (Corey et al. 2010).
The group has a good development record. It has members who are well organized and competent. Group members are highly committed to their work and are always ready to sacrifice their personal demands for the betterment of the group. According to Tuckman’s model of group development, the group is at performing stage. It is believed that at performing stage, the group normally ensures that work is done on a fairly stable structure. All members of the group normally think as a group and are always ready to successfully work together (Levi, 2010). In order to work effectively, the group normally ensures that the governance structure that raises issues of power and influence, work allocation, diversity utilization, coordination of action and thought, external expectations’ clarification and group boundaries management are well developed (Bushe, and Coetzer, 2007).
However, taking the group up to the current level has never been that easy. The group experienced crucial events in its history. During its establishment, members were not free to each other. Some of the members were shy, while others were too quite. Therefore, there was a predominance of maintenance concerns. As the group tried to stabilize from shyness and diffidence among group members, another crucial event was experienced. Group members started to compete for position, authority and influence amongst themselves. Disagreements surfaced, which was later solved through roles allocation. Another crucial event experienced by the group was when the members started creating some ideas regarding the group’s identity. Several ideas were created and most of the members wanted their individual ideas to be considered. This raised serious debate and at the end, the group settled on idea that was accepted by all members.
Dynamics of the workplace group
My workplace group in Abu Dhabi municipality is quite appealing. It is one of the best groups in the department. The main roles of the workplace group include:
Developing commitment, pride, team spirit and powerful relationships
Acknowledging and contributing to the efforts of the group
Foster identity and cooperation of the group
Motivating and directing others towards attainment of organizational goals
Considering and reacting to the needs and abilities of others
Working in a group is not an easy task. It has its own difficulties. Problems and conflicts do always occur. With effective conflict management, this problems and conflicts can be resolved so as to ensure members work effectively within the group (Mulholland and Chris, 2012). Conflict management in my workplace group in Abu Dhabi municipality is quite effective. In case of any conflict, the management normally ensures that it is resolved very first before the situation worsens. The management normally brings the two conflicting sides together and works cooperatively on the issues. One person is usually selected to act as a facilitator. When resolving the conflict, the management normally takes the following steps:
Information gathering; the management identify major issues without making any accusations
Each party is allowed to state their stand, while others are advised to listen respectfully and attentively without interrupting
Parties brain storm so as to find a point of balance
Each party volunteers what it can do to solve the conflict
A formal agreement is tabled
Progress is monitored
Progress is celebrated or rewarded
Mulholland and Chris (2012) argue that in case of a crisis, each party should feel empowered to speak out their idea, feel listened to and feel that they are an essential part of conflict resolution. Each party needs to respect and listen to others, understand the stand of other party and work effectively towards mutual decision.
The group leadership is well organized and involves all members in decision making. The group leader normally informs members about everything that influences their work and share decision making and problem solving responsibilities. He normally ensures that all members participate effectively on group work so as to produce high quality municipal services. The group leader normally creates plans that assist members in assessing their individual performance. He always permits members to set goals and encourages them to grow and be promoted. The group leader normally acknowledges and encourages success or achievement. Therefore, the leadership, in my workplace group in Abu Dhabi municipality, is a participative type of leadership. According to Johnson (2012), participative type of leadership values the contributions of all group members and involves the members in decision making process. It normally makes group members feel as part of the team.
Conceptual Framework
Benefits of team work
Working as a team has many benefits. Team work enhances creativity. It is believed that utilizing the various skills, knowledge and attributes of individuals assists in generating more ideas. Generation of more ideas normally results to development of more creative solutions within the group. This therefore normally assists the group in attaining better results (Brodie, 2007). Team work enhances morale. It is believed that workers who work together are always happier, thus boosting their morale. Increased morale among workers normally creates a good working environment, thus resulting into excellent employee retention. Working as a team assists in information preservation. It is believed that when workers work collectively, important information is usually shared, protecting an organization from loss or injury when an individual worker leaves the organization. When a worker works on a task by himself and other workers do not understand what he is doing or how he is conducting the project, the group will be in problem when that worker quits (Mork, 2012).
Conclusion
From the discussion, it is quite clear that my workplace group in Abu Dhabi municipality is really appealing. It is an organized group, which aims at working collectively so as to achieve the municipality objectives. The roles of the group are friendly to the organization, the community and all group members. The group has an effective conflict management. Its leadership is quite encouraging. Working as a team has many benefits. It enhances creativity, efficiency and morale. It also assists in information preservation.
