The Leadership Challenge Name: Institution: The Leadership Challenge A leader is any individual who can guide people or organizations towards a desired goal. A successful leader has to be creative, innovative and critical in order to direct the people in a realistic way. Leadership involves a strong character that is ready to face a different situation in the environment and this person should be able to come up with solutions. Handling each situation with knowledge and being able to communicate effectively[Jam09]. The Leadership challenge outlines various qualities an individual who desires to be a leader should adopt and enact. Leadership is not a virtue that people are born with but one can develop leadership skills as long as they have the will to become a leader. There are many guidelines on how one should carry out the duties and daily activities when in a leadership position. The leadership will be in various dimensions of life, such as politics, social organizations and business. In one way or another skill used in these fields are related. Finding your voice as a leader involves listening to oneself on what needs to be done. A leader will evaluate when, how, where and why the plan should be carried in a specific period[Kou07]. For example, for a company manager who wants to improve a product or service quality and sales of the company will have to listen to his own mind to what should be done. The leader might decide to improve the machines used in production and embark on advertising as a way of boosting the level of sales. The individual gets an instant thought that is analyzed and finally implemented to enhance the effect it is intended to have. Being forward looking is trait that an efficient leader is expected to have. It entails having the idea of the future in redefining the expectation of the organization or company that one is leading. It is vital as the leader needs to communicate it to the followers so that they can understand and support its course. A director of a particular organization may want to let the future expectations and plans for the company. In order to deliver the information and ensure that it has been shared, the leader will devise a way to attract the crowd as many people would even need its repetition to understand it. Stating the vision of the institution in the form of a story would please the audience and ensuring the use of easy metaphors and proverbs that keep reminding people about it. The leader can also come up with watchwords for the vision to ensure that it sticks to each one’s mind and hence becoming easier to contemplate and spread. The leader might also decide to communicate to individual employees on the vision to ensure a response from the workers and also utilizing the advantage of a personal appeal method of communication. A system of leadership will be faced with several challenges such as ineffective policies and poor organizations of activities in various organizations. The financial system of my lower grade school keeps deteriorating due to several factors such as lack of appropriate personnel in the institution and poor management in the school. There are shortages of learning material because all students do not pay school fees on time. This causes failure of the school duties and obligations towards the students. The management board needs to sit down and come up with strategies that enhance payment of the full school fees on time. This can be done through strictly admitting students who pay their fees in whole. They can also impose fines on the students who fail to meet the fee deadline. Availing qualified personnel in the financial matters will also improve the situation. Change can be achieved if only the leaders exemplify good leadership skill. The leadership system is made up of the leaders and the followers. The purpose of each in the system is to complement each other on matters involving the governance of organizations and societies. For instance, if there were no population in a country then there would be no one to guide. The public will also need the help of leaders as there would be a lot of disorganization in terms of the various needs that people have. The world would be so disorganized if there were no leaders to guide the codes of action. I strongly believe that leaders should view their subjects as the strength of the leadership system. This means that the leaders have a responsibility to guide them and there should be no time that a leader should allow the followers to fail in whatever activity they are involved in. The obligations of a leader include motivating, mobilizing and reinforcement of the various projects that are brought about by the followers. This eventually creates a great relationship between the leaders and the subjects leading to efficient lines of governance in an economy and the world society in general. Situations arise in organizations that may cause a group of individuals to mistrust each other and therefore the losses are incurred as there is no team work. Let’s look at a case of a women’s group, organization whereby they contribute funds into a pool of investments. When they do not trust each other when they meet in meetings there will be no agreements on the suggestions made as each will be thinking that there are hidden agendas in the ideas brought about by the fellow members. A good leader should come up with an open forum whereby each member state the grievances and solve the situations as a group. This will create trust and hence the members will be comfortable and confident with each other and work towards achieving their common goal. For the past three years that I have been in this institution the student leadership system has been on the declining edge whereby the leaders were less affected by the grievances of their fellow students. But since the election of the current chairperson who is a forward-looking, honest, has the maters of the students at heart and approachable, the welfare of the students has improved. The chair exemplifies how a good leader should carry out the obligations of the service to all. The many complaints on student teacher issues have reduced and all the students are happy with the work done. Leadership is everyone’s business means that everyone can become a leader. It also implies all the people are involved in leadership either directly or indirectly. The actions of the constituents trigger leadership strategies in the mind of leaders. People will also be involved in criticizing leaders and this ensures accountability on the part of leaders. In order to become an efficient leader, learning process is worth investing in. Communication is a vital aspect of a good leader therefore a leader will always learn about how to address various situations in the line of duty. Honesty is a virtue that guides morality in leadership and this creates accountability on the part of leadership.
