Interview Reflection Exercise Student’s Name: Instructor’s Name: Course Name and Code: University: Date of Submission: Interview Reflection Exercise Interviewee Reflection Preparedness I was quite prepared for both the oral and the written interviews as an interviewee. I responded well on issues regarding the background of the company and had some sound knowledge behind the firm’s operations like car upgrades and insurance issues. I presented myself in a very decent manner as an interviewee, and illustrated excellent interpersonal communication skills. The dress code was pleasing and satisfying before the eyes of Uma the interviewer. Effectiveness I matched myself well to the roles of the Enterprise rent a car company. When Uma asked me about my educational background and the study on Business administration, I managed to relate the connection between the acquired skills within the university, and the dream profession that is related to the roles at Enterprise Rent-A-Car. When Uma asked me about why I thought I was best suited for the position, he presented a smart argument on how he could sustain a sales’ competitive environment. However, I did not perform well when it came to the issue of research on the organizational role. I only knew of what the company dealt with and did not have a proper background on the company’s background, and had not researched about their mission and vision statements, which are necessary for any interview to do some research on, before attending an interview. I emerged victoriously on competency based issues, where his past experience with different firms presented the interviewee as a person with enough experience, and best suited for the job. I managed to relate the connection between my past work experience, the current position, and the adaptation to personal challenges in the new working environment. I made some efforts in making an explanation on the expected roles. I responded best to questions like “what particular place do you think could have some of the best customer services?” My responses indicated a sound understanding of the expected roles. I described the different situations where I earlier took charge of leadership skills, and my plans on how to exceed the customers’ expectations. The ideas were well arranged as they were presented in an effort to indicate the interconnection between the educational knowledge, the acquired field experiences, and the application of the same in achieving the organizational objectives at Enterprise rent a car company. I presented the best illustrations of competence based on my explanations on customer service improvement, sales promotion and insurance matters. Abstract questions’ section proved to be the most challenging part for me. When requested to tell the interviewer about myself and what I was willing to do for the company, the ideas did not flow well. I was not consistent in terms of presenting the ideas based on what Enterprise rent a car company does as the main core activities. I only managed to offer a thorough explanation on my ability to work as a team leader. Appearance However, I presented a decent body language where I stood in an upright position and faced the interviewer directly into his eyes, a thing that is recommended for interviewees during any interview process, as it presents a chance for excellent interpersonal communication skills. I applied the expected 38% of body language accompanied with excellent communication skills. I also indicated confidence throughout up to the very last question of the interview. Towards the end of the interview, I had gained enough courage and was responding quite well to the questions. I closed the interview by way of asking some questions regarding the company’s performance, something that the interviewer considered as part of his potential to lead Enterprise rent a car company. I closed the interview by way of defending myself that I am not good at oral interviews as I was in written interviews. I also made some clarification on the issue of feedback, and whether it was necessary for me to make a follow-up. Future Improvements Response through non verbal means establishes effective communication between the interviewer and interviewee. They include facial expression and simple response movements. Abstract descriptions ought to briefly describe connectivity between the different activities within a company and the employees. Interviewer Reflection Preparedness I had in possession, all the necessary and critical questions in order as they would follow each other. I was well prepared and ready for the interview. I was well equipped with the necessary materials that were meant to successfully complete the interview process and choose the best of the interviewees. I had set time that was allocated for each and every question. I allocated enough time for the interview session in order to ensure that the probing session was effective in extracting the necessary details from the interviewees so as to get select the best. I also had a schedule of how the questions would follow each other. I offered direct questions to save on time in order to allocate equal time sessions for each of the interviewees with transparency. I organized the questions in a flow right from the enquiries on educational background, working experience, competency issues, task performance, current application, and personal strengths and weaknesses. Appearance I ensured that I remained courteous throughout the interview process, retained a decent sitting position, and ensured proper use of non verbal skills. According to the observer, I presented myself quite decently and with a lot of respect and humility towards the interviewees and also utilized minimal body language skills. I employed quite some effective communication skills that enabled the interviewee grasp and answer the question directly and thereby saving time. I presented myself well especially in terms of employing courtesy during the interview process. The observer stated that I at all cost avoided the spirit of intimidation throughout the interview process. Effectiveness I based the criteria of selecting the suitable candidate on the basis of knowledge about the company’s operations. The questions that I asked were poorly oriented towards the selection of the most suitable candidate. I mostly concentrated on the categories of educational background, evidence on acquired skills, previous work experiences within other firms, current application, and personalities of the interviewees. Some of the questions that I asked included: what does the company do, the mission and vision statement, company structure, past experience with the company’s products or services, and interaction with either of their staff. I considered this as one of the most effective modes of evaluation, since it was a suitable interviewee would have researched on the same information prior to the interview session. I had to ensure that the session was effective by way of associating the interviewee’s knowledge with his ability to perform in the firm’s roles. I made a thorough probe to the interviewee on his ability to connect between the skills he acquired in school, his former working experience and the roles that were expected of him at Enterprise Rent-A-Car. I evaluated the personal abilities of the interviewee thoroughly by way of offering general questions. This process made the interview session to become quite effective in choosing the best of the interviewees. Observer Reflection Performance As an observer, I noted that both the interviewer and the interviewee were properly prepared. They had prior information on what was expected of the interview. I observed that the interviewee had all the necessary information regarding the interviewee proceedings and had thoroughly researched well about the company. I also noted the level of preparedness from the way in which the customer made an explanation on his ability and competency level. I also noted that the interviewer had a well prepared schedule of the whole interview process. They all observed time, making the interview process be quite effective. I made an observation on the way in which the two presented themselves. They both appeared decent and the level of courtesy within the interviewer and the interviewee was quite commendable. I observed that the interviewee performed quite well throughout the interview process. He ended up closing the interview in an organized manner. Effectiveness I noted that the interviewer and the interviewee were quite effective on the way they conducted and responded to the interview proceedings. I observed that the approach that the interviewer used during the probing section ensured that Enterprise Rent-A-Car would get the best of the interviewees. I noted the level of relevance in the questions that were directed towards the interviewees, and the level of clarity that was expected from the interviewee made a thorough scrutiny on whether the interviewees were really qualified for the task. I observed that the questions that the interviewer raised effectively were framed in an easy structure for the interviewee to respond effectively. It was quite easy to evaluate the best suited candidate. I observed this from the questions that the interviewer asked especially on the interviewee’s past experience, his education, his ability to deliver, and his personal character. I noted this to be a thorough process that effectively analyzed the ability of the interviewees to perform according to the core roles of Enterprise Rent-A-Car. Use of verbal and nonverbal communication I observed that the use of verbal and non verbal communication skills was interchangeably used between the interviewer and the interviewee. When the interviewee was being probed by the interviewer by way of verbal skills, he attentively responded by indicating some sense of attention. This was noted by way of responses like head nods. Use of facial expressions for both the interviewee and the interviewer was witnessed for the larger part of the interview process. It was however noted that the largest part of the interview utilized verbal skills. A combination of both the oral and the nonverbal techniques made the process to be quite effective as it provided a chance for a thorough scrutiny where the necessary information was extracted from the interviewee, and this had an impact on developing an interactive platform that assisted both participants to feel at ease to participate to the interview process. Feedback After acting as an observer throughout the interview process, I provided some useful feedback information to the interviewee and the interviewer where I highlighted out on the necessary improvements in future. I however did not have much to criticize. Lessons learnt I learnt that I needed to check on their use of sign language, their preparedness, and focus on the major basis of evaluation in order to acquire the best of the person in any interview. From the reflections discussed above, the interaction with different interviewers and interviewees present some requirement for a successful interview session. It can easily be noted that all the interviews are mainly putting efforts towards conduction of effective interviews over short periods of time, while still saving on time and other resources to get the best of the expected in different firms. Some of the firms outsource the interview services to companies that have specialized in matters of interviews. This makes the interview process to be quick, efficient, and transparent. I also concluded that time factor is yet another part that requires some improvements in order to present enough of chances for both the interviewer and the interviewee. The job interview sets of processes can be lengthy or short. I recommend that the modern technology, interviews have adopted technology, should continuously be adopted to save time on interviews.
