GENERAL SURVEY Name: Institution: Course: Date: A survey research is a very crucial part of measurement that is used in applied researches and especially applied social research. The crucial most part of it is that it encompasses the broad area of measurement procedures like asking questions and recording from the participants. A good survey research can be a written research or a one on one interview. A certain survey was conducted to gain a good understanding on the impact of entertainment that it has on people and also the type of entertainment that many people engage in. It is expected that television has been the most point of attraction to the American community and to the world as a whole. However it is good to note that in the current world of entertainment we have many sources of entertainment. Therefore this survey was conducted to know what platform people use for entertainment and what is preferred. It was to represent the whole American population but due to the difficult of collecting the information from the whole population, a sample is allowed to be used. Therefore for this survey a sample of 2000 participants were chosen from the population. The selection of the sample was properly done and between the age of 10 to 50 years. In addition, the sample was selected from all the states in US and their selection was random to represent the whole population. Based on the results of the survey that was conducted, the results were that many people watch television as their main source of entertainment. This is especially the television series which are widely recognised as a source of entertainment. From the survey 70% of the respondents view television as the source of entertainment, 20 % view internet as their main source and especially the young between the age of 20 and 30 years. Animations and cartoons also provide entertainment to many people who responded to the survey. The results also showed that more women got entertainment from the television as compared to men. The older people too were more entertained by television than the young ages. Political survey In 2013 Pew research Centre conducted a national survey to understand what people thinks about the federal government. It was conducted on 9th of January 2013. The survey involved 1502 adults form the total population. Of these 53% thinks that the government does not give them their freedom and threatens their personal rights. 43% of the survey disagrees with the notion that the federal government threatened their freedom and personal rights. The survey also noted that there is a growing view from the people that the federal government threatened their personal rights and freedoms and especially from the conservative republicans. From the research 76% of the conservative republicans believe that the federal government was detrimental and that it threatened their personal freedom. It is necessary to note that the sample that was selected included all adults. This is a good sample as it involves only those people of the population that are allowed to vote. In addition, the sample was randomly selected from the population and hence their views represent the views of the whole population. The importance of this research to the media company that is conducted the survey is that if it conducted well it is able to predict the outcomes of major political events like elections. The company is able to attract many viewers with the intention of a proper analysis and hence the necessity to conduct a good research. General survey A Survey was conducted of LGBT Americans. This was a study conducted to show what the lesbians, transgender, gays and bisexual thought about their relations with the population. From the research, 92% say that the society had accepted their ways and was now living with them properly. They also expect to grow in number and more of the society will continue to accept them. The LGBT (Lesbians, gays, bisexual and Transgender) community attributes the changes in the attitude of people due to the changing attributes of the society. In addition there have been many high profile public figures professing that they are LGBT and advocate for their rights and this has made them to be recognised in the society. The survey was conducted nationally and a sample of 1197 LGBT adults were questioned. They expressed the many ways that they felt stigmatised by the society. The LGBT community has been facing stigma from the society. All in all the respondents thought that all this had changed and that the society was ready to receive them as they were. This survey can also be used to tell about the whole population as the sample is the representative of the whole population. In addition the sample was carefully selected from the many known LGBT and hence the results of the survey represent the general view of the public. Overview From the above surveys, it shows a small sample is collected in all the surveys. This therefore shows that a big sample does not necessarily mean correct results. A good and properly consolidated sample that is not very small yet not very large can serve to represent the population. It is correct to say that the selection of the samples in the three surveys was properly done and was selected from the ages that were relevant to the research being conducted. In addition, the sample was selected from all the states in US and their selection was random to represent the whole population. Sample selection is very crucial and hence it ought to be done carefully. All the three researches had their results well prepared and analysed and especially presented in percentage forms. Application From the study in the class I decided to conduct a survey from my friends and especially on the type of entertainment that they prefer. I took a sample of 20 students from the class to be my respondents in the class. The students were selected randomly and not from my friends alone. I only selected 20 students not because it is a good sample size but because collecting of information from the whole school is hectic and time consuming. I came up with three questions that I would ask to know how much radios were listened to and how useful could it be for companies to use the radios to advertise their products. 1. Do you listen to the radio, if yes what time and shows do you listen to? 2. If you do not listen to the radio, how do you spend your free time and how do you get entertained? 3. What is your age? Question 1 I do not listen 5 Sports show 6 News 12 music show 15 political interviews 7 The graphs above shows that 25% of the respondents do not listen to the radio at all, however for those who listen to music shows are preferred as compared to other shows. Question 2 Watch television 3 Internet 2 Other 1 What is your age? Age Frequency 15-20 3 20-25 12 25-30 5 The above research that I conducted can be very helpful to different companies and especially the companies with interest in advertising in radios. In addition, it is also good to the media companies as it shows what the listeners prefer to listen to. In conclusion, a well conducted research gives a true representation of the population. However, it only happens if the sample is well researched (Cleary, 2004). Reference Cleary, B. L. (2004).Conducting research in long-term care settings. New York: Springer Pub. Read More
