The paper also provides the annotated information which includes the summary and critical evaluation of the five sources. Finally it also has the proposed essay plan. The plan has the introduction, the body and the conclusion. The essay will also be about the way in which business intelligence supports decision making within organizations. Introduction Business intelligence is very critical for organizations keen on making meaningful decisions. Decisions are very important to any organization because they affect the operations of the organization and its relationship with customers, clients and other groups of people it works with. Proper and effective decisions are made when business intelligence is incorporated into the process. Business intelligence involves a number of technologies, theories, processes and methodologies that help in the transformation of raw data into information that can be used in an organization. Business Intelligence handles huge quantities of information that can be used in decision making to identify and develop opportunities. Business intelligence therefore helps in making use of unused opportunities and executing a good strategy which in turn provides a competitive market advantage and stability. There are various sources in the name of books, journals and websites that have a lot of information about business intelligence in organizational decision making. This paper presents an annotated bibliography of five of these sources relevant to the topic and the proposed plan of the essay to be written on the topic. The essay will have three main parts which are the introduction, body and conclusion. The body will have subtopics. Annotated Bibliography Bibliographic information 1. Mohamed, A.H. (2012). A Business Intelligence Approach to Support Decision Making in Service Evolution Management.(Online) Available at http://ieeexplore.ieee.org/xpl/articleDetails.jsp?arnumber=6274125 (Accessed 5 March 2013). 4. Sauter, V. L. 2011. Decision Support Systems for Business Intelligence. John Wiley & Sons. 5. Vitt, E., Luckevich, M., & Misner, S. 2010. Business Intelligence. O’Reilly. Annotation Explanation The first source is about how business intelligence enhances the quality of decision making. The BI system creates the environment for effective processes of making decisions, strategic reasoning and action in an organization (Mohamed 2012). The second source by Karlson and Nord is a case study which proves that business intelligence solutions have the ability of shortening difficult decision making processes by providing people with right information and therefore altering the process of making decisions (Karlsen & Nord 2012). The third source by Ernando, Bruno, Karin and Renata proposes a Business approach that can support providers in making decisions over service evolution. This approach relies on integration of services usage data as well as business data related to it (Ernando, Bruno, Karin & Renata, 2013, 3). The fourth source shows that decision support through business intelligence is very important for businesses because decisions have to be made on daily basis. They identify business intelligence as being part of the decisions support system (Sauter 2011, pp. 12). Business Intelligence by Vitt, Luckevich, and Misner shows how to make decisions in a faster and better way about operations, customers and partners by using available data to make useful business information or business intelligence for use in the organization (Vitt, Luckevich, & Misner 2010, pp. 04). Critical Evaluation of each reference 1. Mohamed, A.H. (2012). Impact of Business Intelligence and Decision Support on the Quality of Decision making. This article is a report of a research done on the five star hotels. It is an investigation of the impact of business intelligence on the quality of decision making via decision support in a direct or indirect manner. The article gives the methodology used and the results obtained. It is very relevant to the topic because it provides the report on how decision making is impacted by new information as well as decision support. It is however limited because it fails to provide elaborate information on the area of decision support and how it impacts decision making (Mohamed 2012). 2. Karlsen, I. A. & Nord, M. (2012). Real time business intelligence and decision-making: how does a real time business intelligence system enable better and timelier decision-making? An exploratory case study. University of Agder. This article is also important because it has in-depth information about how real time business intelligence may help an organization to make good decisions on time. This article reports on the results of a case study done to reveal information on prevailing trends. The article is very much relevant to the topic because it dwells on the benefits of real time intelligence on decision making. The limitation of this article is that it does not elaborate on the procedure used to conduct the case study. This is important for the credibility of its findings (Karlsen & Nord 2012, 26). 3.  Ernando, S., Bruno, V., Karin, B. & Renata, G., 2013. A Business Intelligence Approach to Support Decision Making in Service Evolution Management This is a journal article that helps to promote the business intelligence approach as a critical one in evolution management decisions. It has absolute relevance to the topic because its contribution to the importance of business intelligence is very clear. Even though is basically on service evolution, it provides a clue on the other decisions to be made. The limitation of this article is that much of the emphasis is placed on evolution management decisions instead of the general sense of decision making. This bias denies the reader an opportunity to see the value of business intelligence in its broader sense (Ernando, Bruno, Karin & Renata 2013, 33). 4. Sauter, V. L. 2011. Decision Support Systems for Business Intelligence. John Wiley & Sons. This is a book on how decision support systems are used to boost intelligence. Intelligence is in turn used in making decisions. The book is relevant to the topic because it paints for the reader a picture of how business intelligence and decision support systems operate together to enhance proper decision making. The book is however limited because its approach to the topic is relatively shallow and it does not provide the reader in-depth and illustrated information on decision support systems (Sauter 2011 pp. 12-18). 5. Vitt, E., Luckevich, M., & Misner, S. 2010. Business Intelligence. O’Reilly. This is a book about business intelligence. This book was written by a number of authors and its relevance about the topic is not in doubt. It is valuable to the study because it details how an organization can make better decisions in a faster way to satisfy their partners, customers and improve their operations by using data to make required information. The book is limited only in a small way because it is too broad. It fails to single out on specific areas especially the importance of business intelligence on decision making (Vitt, Luckevich & Misner 2010, 4-17).
