Junior employees form the backbone of a company, and therefore, they have a chance of either making the company prosper or fail. In other words, employees are the face of the organization they are working for. It is therefore, paramount to make sure that they are working in a conducive and friendly environment. Some of the successful companies in the United Arab Emirates and the world at large have established mechanisms through which employees can raise their concerns to the human resource department. 2.0 Overview of the Report This report will zero in on the history of the Emirates airways Company to date and the various stages it has gone through to become what it is in the modern day world. Furthermore, this report will zero in on the human resources department of the Emirates airways Company and how it operates to the comfort of the other employees in the company. In addition, the report will also look at human resources recruitment and selection plan of the company. This will shed more light on how the company recruits local people as well as foreigners. 3.0 Background of the Report and a brief history of the company Rising from humble beginnings, Emirates has become one of the biggest airline companies in the world today. In the modern day world, this company has its headquarters in Dubai at the United Arab Emirates. This company is one of the major employers in the Middle East with close over fifty thousand employees in its payroll. Its subsidiary known as the Dnata is the largest ground handling company in the world today. This report will therefore, look at the process through which individuals get hired from both within United Arab Emirates and outside the country. The companies operations are complex because of the work done and the number of employees involved. For an effective and efficient company, it requires the company to have a very strong human resource department. This is the case with the Emirates Airline Company. Emirates airways are one of the largest airlines in the world today. However, it has taken close to thirty years to achieve this growth. According to Baum, Emirates Company was initially formed in 1985 as a handling company for airlines coming to Dubai. He points out that the Dubai Royal Family that formed the company did not see the importance of setting up an airline by then. However, when the Pakistan International Airline leased two of its aircrafts in the mid 1980s, Emirates airline was conceived. He suggests that, to promote trade between the two countries, the first flights were between Dubai and Karachi (115-119). Wil points out that when it became evident that the company prospects were bright, the Royal Family in Dubai injected funds that were used to purchase second hand Boeing 727-200 (87-90). As the operations diversified, the company began looking for professionals to drive the company to greater heights of success. To this effect, he says that Maurice Flanagan was appointed to work as the new chief executive officer of the company. His vast experience while working for British Airways and Gulf Air played an important role in the modernization of Emirates Airline to what it is today. That is he laid the foundation that has made Emirates Airline the largest airline in the Middle East. According to him, Maurice Flanagan was joined in the management team by Tim Clark and Sheikh Ahmed bin Saeed Al Maktoum. Bamber has observed that, during its early years of operations, the company commercial and passenger flights were concentrated in the Middle East and Asian continent. In the 1990s, he has noted that Emirates Airlines was perceived to be one of the fastest growing airlines in terms of passenger volumes and cargo uplift. According to him, by the end of 1993 for instance, the airline record shows that it carried more than 1.5 million passengers and close to one hundred tones of cargo. With booming cargo business, Emirates Airline opened a new division in 1998 to cater for cargo flight only; the Emirates Sky Cargo (46-53). At the turn of millennium, more fortunes for the companies were forth coming. According to Cage, the 21st century is regarded as the period in which Emirates Airline has managed to out do other major airlines in the modern day world (112-115). He says that, in the 21st century Emirates, airline has been making huge profits at the expense of other airlines in the Middle East. He has observed that as Emirates profits has been going up, profit margins of other companies such as Gulf Air has been going down. The company has continued to expand her network and today, the company if flying to more than one hundred destinations in the world. This has made the airline be voted as the best airline in various occasions, in the modern day world. According to him, Emirates is one of the few airlines in the world that have managed to fly in all the continents. This means that the employees of the Emirates Company have played a very important role in offering quality services to their clients who have in turn responded by making Emirates Airline their preferred carrier. Emirates Company has managed to establish other subsidiary that work hand in hand to make sure that the operations of the entire company are a success all year round. Some of these subsidiary companies include Dnata that is responsible for providing ground services to emirates flights and other airlines, SkyCargo that deals with all cargo flights, and Emirates Airport Services that is tasked with the provision of ground services to flights whose operations are to and from Dubai International Airport. Other subsidiaries are Emirates Wolgan Valley Resort & Spa, Skywards, Emirates Holidays, Arabian Adventures, Congress Solutions International, Mercator, Emirates Engineering, Alpha Flight Group Limited and in flight Catering and Retail. In order to manage this entire workforce, the company must develop an automated system to monitor the activities of each and every person in the company. 4.0 The Human Resource Strategy of the Emirates Airline Company According to Deb, an effective Human Resource Department must develop or initiate strategies that it will put in place to make sure that all employees issues are comprehensively addressed (21-24). In order to achieve this, there are various steps that have to be taken to realize these objectives. Brown has observed that some of the companies and government institutions in the modern world have failed to automate their operations. As a result, they have been loosing millions of money in paying ghost workers (67-70). He has observed that this has led to the collapse of such organizations and institutions. In this respect, the human resource department of the Emirates Airline Company has automated its operations to capture all the important information of its employees. This has proved to be critical because all employees have been assigned unique staff numbers that they use to swipe when coming and leaving their work stations. In addition, the company has allowed its subsidiaries to establish human resource offices to address the issues of the employees. This is important because, the main office is relieved of a lot of work that would consume much time in addressing the employees’ issues. The subsidiaries human resource offices have taken the role of monitoring employee situation in their respective department. For instance, an employee in Dnata cannot take his or her issues to the Emirates Wolgan Valley Resort & Spa human resource office. This has been done strategically to make sure that employee concerns are addressed on time and by a person who allocated that department. This means that, by the time the head office human resource office takes up the matter for consideration; all possible avenues have been exhausted. This means that an employee cannot take his or her complains directly to the head office without going through the departmental human resource office. In an attempt to boost the morale of the employees, the human resource management has put in place a policy where the best performing employees are promoted every year. However, this has been left to be decided by the head of departments as well as the supervisors and the mangers in the department. This means that every employee will put his best foot forward to win this accolade. As a result, the company operations go on in a smooth and in a coherent manner hence promoting the growth of the company. Emirates Airline Company has created an avenue through which employees can communicate with the senior most managers in the company. This move is strategic because the perception of the employee is that once they have an audience with the Human Resource Manager for instance, their issues will be prioritized. As a result, the employee feels relaxed and ready to continue working whenever he or she has reported such matter to the authorities. 5.0 Human Resource Recruitment & Selection Goals and Objectives Emirates Airline Company goal statement is delivering the world's best in-flight experience amongst its passengers across all destinations in the world. 5.1 SMART objectives of the Emirates Airline Company Human Resource Department According to Deb, a successful organization has to set certain objectives that it aims to achieve for its growth and the welfare of its own employees (23-25). The objectives are very important because the company will use them to measure if it has achieved its prospects for the set duration, for instance one financial year. Therefore using the SMART principle, the company has Specific goals in every financial year. For instance, the Human Resource Department envisages that, in every year, the productivity of each employee will go up. This it hopes will be realized by providing all the necessary tools to help the employees be productive. As a result, the company will continue growing in terms of passengers carried, cargo uplifted and overall infrastructure because more money will be available to promote this growth. Secondly, the company hopes to have an annual salary increment to its employees. Salary increment is a morale boost for the employees so that they can feel and consider themselves as part of the company. In addition, the company has a policy through which the profits realized in every financial year are partially subdivided amongst employees in all grades, in the company and its subsidiaries. Furthermore, best performing employees are rewarded every year an act that motivates others to work hard to win these prizes. As a result, there is a stiff competition amongst employees in various departments with a sole aim of bagging in the nomination of being the best employee of the year. 6.0 HR Recruitment and Selection Plan Details 6.1 Aircraft Technician Position advertisement The person will be required to conduct maintenance of the aircraft in line with the laid down procedures and company’s policy. 6.2 Job Outline The successful person will be tasked with ensuring that there is timely and efficient maintenance of aircraft engines and other parts. The person will be required to liaise with the Supervisor and the manager in charge to carry out trouble shooting process as demonstrated in the maintenance manual procedures. In addition, all the works done on an aircraft is done to warrant Certificate of Release. The successful person will complete all the paperwork from the task he or she will be allocated to perform. 6.3 Experience and Qualifications: The ideal candidate should have a Diploma in Aircraft Maintenance Engineering or equivalent couple with more than years of experiencing dealing with wide aircrafts. In addition, prior training preferably with other airlines is paramount though not mandatory. Candidates are required to apply online via the company’s website and attach their resume and all relevant documents they possess. The deadline for this application is 31st December 2013. Those who will succeed in the previous interviews will face a panel where more information will be sort from them. The top three candidates will have their names submitted to the engineering manager who will have an opportunity to interview them and then select one or more of them to join his department.
