Community Name Institution Professor Course Date COMMUNITY Introduction Numerous definitions developed over time as pertains to the term community. This can be attributed to the wide spectrum over which it is spread. The word community is defined in terms of geographical location, groups of people living in particular places, and as an area of common life. There have also emerged some definitions in political terms. C.J Galpin was the first to define the term community in relation to sketching the outline of country communities in provisos of trade and provision areas adjoining a central rural community (Talbot, L., & Veranda, G, 2009). People emanating from all corners of the globe have not only tried to define the term community, but have gone ahead to develop sub-branches under which the same can be examined further. Community can be viewed as people of particular common characteristics residing in the similar region. Looking at it from this angle, people exercise joint ownership of either the values that characterize them or the locality in which they live. States or countries unified by similar interests and strengths ,a good example in this case being the European community is another illustration of how wide we can go in our quest to bring out clear understanding of community. The geographical approach considers the similarity in occupation of people and something that they commonly share. The definition of interest covers the community as a people linked by beliefs, religion, occupation, ethnic origin and other factors. For example, there are business communities bound together by their occupation, gay community’s bound by their sexual orientation and Anglican community bound by their religious beliefs. The interest definition is most acceptable in the contemporary society. Communion, this defines the spirit of oneness. A community has a trend to stay close and care for each other. Therefore, the term is used to refer to a grouping of individuals who have the spirit of community in their environment (Anderson, B, 2006). Migration from rural areas to urban areas led to the development of settlements of people from different walks of life. Despite their differences they have developed a bond and come together to support each other. In this form of settlements, communion is evident. As community shares beliefs, and collective understanding, they develop common goals and objectives. The achievement of the goals is achieved by communicating and expressing themselves in the language acceptable to the community. The business community for example uses business terms that non members may not understand. The meaning and the use of their words remain sacred to the specific community. There are founding manners and moral behaviours that require to be followed in the communities. Their united agreement to these values allows the definition of members’ responsibility and duty to the community (Elliot, M., & Thomas, I. G, 2009). The values of the communities are archived by passing the values to younger generations to uphold the integrity of the community and achieve the long term goals of the community. Community groups remain strong and carry great influence in modern days. Many laws and amendments are achieved through communal fighting. For example, the gay community continually fights to have the other communities accept them. They have also achieved the creation and implementation of many laws through collective fighting. The business community also comes together to ensure that the government creates a conducive environment for their business. As earlier mentioned, communities vary in types. In Australia some of the community groups include: business organisations, culture organisations, health organisations, charity organisations, and church organisations (Anderson, B, 2006). All these organisations vary in size, structure, functions and organisation. They are able to serve their purpose however. These communities continually grow overtime and are faced by emerging issues in the society. Each community bears the duty to deal with these issues in their own unique ways. Most of the issues affect the whole society as a whole and not a particular community. Globalisation, environmental concerns, social fairness issues, health issues and economic problems consist some of these issues. Impact of globalisation on community Globalisation can be looked at in respect to great movement of masses of people, capital investments not forgetting ideas as a result of massive economic integration driven by trade. Recently due to high technological advancements and continued fading of trade barriers, the speed at which exchange occurs is much faster. Globalisation connects the world in terms of trade, tourism and political aspects.As a result of globalisation, some communities’ standards of living have dropped drastically. This is because the kind of competition that arises as a result of globalisation cannot be withstood by all. This then means that those who succumb to defeat by the competition end up worse off. Never the less those that emerge victorious to their competitors in the globalisation enjoy better standards of living with poverty becoming a thing of the past. Globalisation resulted in the investment of foreign companies in the country. These companies provide completion for the local companies. This led to increased accountability. The companies ensure that their companies produce quality products due to competition. This brings steady development of the services offered in the country. Trade has also improved but it is very dependent on the international market. Trade in Australia is no longer affected by interior issues but also exterior matters. Australia relies on exporting coal, wheat and gold for them to import cars, clothing and television (Talbot, L., & Veranda, G, 2009). The prices of selling and buying depend on the global price of labour and cost of production. Many variables need balancing to ensure the country remains competitive and makes profits. Globalisation also facilitated the movement of labour. Australians continue to move to other countries to offer labour. Similarly labour from other countries flows into Australia. This also brought the interaction between different people of different cultures leading to multiculturalism in the country. Owing to globalisation the communication and technology developed to cope with the trade. Every community is affected by globalisation in one way or the other. The business community and the government (as a community of lawmakers) remain most affected by globalisation as they try to balance the economy with proper policies. The community consisting of labour unions also faces some challenges and benefits owed to globalisation. Some communities like the multi cultural community rose due to globalisation. Globalisation affects communities positively and negatively equally. Environmental issues The environment is an integral part of the world and society as a whole. The facts and assumptions all conclude that it is impossible for humans to survive without their environment. However conserving it and maintaining it is still challenging. The environment affects all community groups equally. Business communities rely on selling products whose production involves environmental degradation. Most business people come under pressure from other communities to conserve the environment. Environmental issues result mainly from human activities that destruct the environment. Some of the major disruptions provide income for their countries. A dilemma therefore presents itself as to how to solve the issue. Australia remains the largest exporter of coal worldwide. However the twenty coals fired up control factories remain a major potential disaster. The carbon emissions of the plants continually pollute the environment (Elliot, M., & Thomas, I. G, 2009). Though there is pressure for optional energy sources by environmentalist, little has been done. The oceans in Australia are another income generating resource in Australia. However they continually get distracted due to agricultural chemicals washed off from the mainland. This causes destruction of the reef. Consequently the level of sea water rises. Climate change also remains a challenge due to the activities in the country. Australia appears the most vulnerable country to climate change. The community of environmentalist continually educate the other communities on environmental changes and their effects. The livelihood of every community is at stake, therefore each community is concern. There is a lot of concern in regards to the environment. The concern is said to stand at 79% however the implementation stands at seven percent. Most communities however pressure the government to create policies that promote the conservation of the environment. Social fairness issues Social fairness involves offering individual groups or communities their justifiable dues. It provides for every human being to be treated as worth and equal to other human beings. Social justice often faces challenges in its implementation. This is sometimes due to factors like race, class, or religion (Anderson, B, 2006). Social fairness should be present in all sectors of life including: education, health, and justice. Social justice is of great concern because sometimes even communities lack social justice toward other communities. For Instance the Christian or religious communities as a whole continually reject the gay community. Conflict also occurs between the business community and the government. However due to the awareness of social justice peace is restored. To encourage social cohesion and integration the existence of social justice is necessary. The community of employees or labourers continually conflict with the community of employers. After dialogue and negotiations social fairness is recovered and peace prevails. Labour unions take credit as a community that fought for social fairness in the world. Social fairness is the actual basis of democracy. Communities ensure the upholding of social fairness. They keep each other in check and also keep the government in check. The internal structures of the communities frequently get crisis of social fairness. For example when an accident occurs within the organisation they need to find the person accountable for the mistake and give them a reasonable penalty. Social fairness is not an emerging issue; it is an issue that has remained existent for a long time. It is not an issue that is eliminated in one day. The solutions found for this problem therefore need to be passed down to generations to ensure they encourage social fairness in future. Health issues The lifestyles in the world continually changes in all aspects. This lifestyle change has caused drastic consequences for the health of individuals. The coming of automotives and increase in food consumption brought many changes. Therefore health continues being a major concern for communities (Talbot, L., & Veranda, G, 2009). The government is burdened with the challenge of providing better health care while the doctors and scientist need to create more cures for emerging diseases. Dieticians’ advice the community on healthy food while business people into the food industry are challenged to provide options for the calorie diet they provide. Cancer remains a leading killer disease in the world. The science community remain unaware of the cure. Many communities therefore, have donated funds for the research of the disease. A cardiovascular disease remains another major killer in Australia. Type 2 diabetes also continues to pose a challenge to the health sector. Child obesity is also a major health concern as well as kidney disease. All these diseases arise from the change in lifestyles. For example, people eat more fats, calories and starch carrying foods compared to the past. They fail to take part n exercises and workouts making their bodies dormant. Their systems therefore become lazier and metabolisms reduce. Some foods also contain preservatives unhealthy to the body. This disease can be prevented. The communities are affected by these diseases especially if they lose some members to the illness. HIV/AIDS also concerns the communities. Gay communities and social workers may be the most affected by this disease. Although it affects them mainly other communities also worry due the interaction between them (Talbot, L., & Veranda, G, 2009). This matter of health is a concern the world over which affects every community. All communities therefore face the challenge and sometimes collude with other communities to provide a solution. Economic recession The world is in a recession. Every community remains affected by the ongoing economic recession. Communities and their members are concern by the state of things in the country due to high cost of living and unemployment (Anderson, B, 2006). Though the rate of interest loans did not go up during the beginning, it remains impossible to achieve the rates offered. The community of non profit organisation remain unable to fulfil their obligations. The economic recession challenges the family structure and the youth. Despite their education the labour market does not favour the youth in this times. The government continues to be under pressure to make policies that favour growth of business and curb the recession. This proves to be a challenge to the law makers. On the other hand the businesses owners continue to struggle maintain their businesses. The labourers pressure the business owners to increase their pay due to higher living costs. Though Australia is considered to be in a better position in comparison to other countries, communities remain worried. This is because most of the fund themselves and are therefore struggling in this economic times. The economic recession affects communities and their members in many ways. Solutions and community leadership. Community leadership characterises extreme transparency and organised structures. Community leadership consist a lot of exchange of ideas. The leaders ensure they lead the community to the common goal they all share. Through workshops and other programs the leaders are able to exchange ideas of leadership (Talbot, L., & Veranda, G, 2009). The leaders also form their own communities bound by their common responsibilities as community leaders. Ranging from the rural areas, regional and metropolitan bases there exist over thirteen community leadership organisations. Common understanding suggests that a collective group achieves more than an individual working alone. The organisations carry the vision of enhancing and developing community leadership in all regions. They also seek recognition for inspiring, developing and strengthening community leadership. They aim to collaborate with other communities like the government and the business community to create awareness for the importance of community leadership. They also aspire to acquire funds to maintain the community leadership organisation sustainably. To provide advice to existing community leaders on successfully run communities. They encourage ethical leadership, generosity, collaboration, diversity and innovation. The communities continually search for solutions for the problems they encounter. Globalisation brought multiculturalism. The communities continually learn to embrace and accept people from different cultures. The communities also consult with each other to solve problems. For example the church continues to gather information regarding gay communities and embrace them. The same is applicable to environmental matters. The communities welcome advice from experts on the environment in order to be able to care for their environment. The encouragement to implement the solutions is given to the members (Elliot, M., & Thomas, I. G, 2009). For example a club may declare a tree planting day for their members in order to conserve their environment. The clubs also engage in charity events to solve health problems. They also arrange sport days to encourage members to work out. There is also the creation of awareness on the foods to avoid and the lifestyles to change. The communities continually try to find solutions for issues that affect them. Conclusion Evidently communities are important in the society. They bring persons together with a common positive goal and help them face issues as a collective group. Through communities positive change can be implemented. Vices decline because consequences exist for those who break the code of conduct. Communities prove useful both in rural areas and the metropolitan.
