This organization over the years has delivered superior quality service to their guests. Being a part of hospitality industry indicates that an organization has to provide continuous training to staff members since they form an intermediary between firm and customers. Work days and hours I had hectic working hours since I was supposed to generate high sales volume. I usually started my shift from 8a.m. in the morning. This was my normal job shift hours. However it was subjected to change with increasing guest list. There were circumstances in which I had to wake up at 6a.m. in the morning to attend some guests at 8a.m. My entire day plan was not based on any specific time period. In normal working days, I completed allocated tasks by 7p.m. in the evening. This time frame was even subjected to change since guests arrived at Fort Rapids any time. The working days were initially confined to 6 and one weekly off which could be taken from Monday to Thursday. This kind of structure was adopted by the organization in order to provide superior quality service to guests during weekends. Friday, Saturday and Sunday were crucial days of the week for staff members. I had to work till 1a.m. in the morning on Sundays due to series of events being hosted at Fort Rapids. This job section also included a wide array of activities. I was responsible for communicating and even recruiting international and domestic citizens. As sales personnel I was also given responsibility to approach Chinese business and given them information regarding destinations based in America. My job task was also inclined towards Ohio State Students. I have to develop sales pitch for these students to sell tickets of Waterpark. Apart from these tasks, I was also involved with my manager in context of expanding business and making more money. This new task was closely knitted with effective application of communication skills so as to sell hotel rooms to residents. There were total of 75 employees in my department and each of them was allocated specific job roles. For instance 15 to 20 employees were actively indulged in maintaining database and providing information regarding prospects. 20 to 30 employees perform field work in terms of approaching prospects and converting them into a deal. The rest of team members were appointed for dealing with high profile clients. Description about supervisor I was completely new in the hospitality industry and required continuous assistance from my team leaders. I had to report to Mr. Jacob Fernandis who was sales manager in the company. He had experience of 10 years in this organization. He was currently managing a team of 45 employees. As sales manager, he was the most appropriate person who could have taught me all sales techniques. He not only had responsibility of sales team but even actively participated in customer relationship management. Mr. Jacob Fernandis was a parental figure for sales workforce. To be more precise he not only helped employees in context of closing a deal but even tried to resolve any kind of professional issue. This in turn had influenced management to assign more tasks upon Mr. Fernandis. He was efficiently managing sales team along with customer queries or requests. Mr. Jacob Fernandis played a key role from managerial perspective and was my immediate boss during internship tenure. Pace of work Fort Rapids Indoor Waterpark and Conference Center occupied a renowned position in hospitality industry. The company was known for delivering exceptional customer service and facilities. I believe that pace of work for an organization needs to be high if it is determined towards addressing customer demand. This was similar to what I noticed during my internship at Ford Rapids Indoor Waterpark and Conference Center. Staff members were given flexibility when there was less number of guests. On the other hand, they had to do overtime with increase in frequency of visitors. There were circumstances when employees had to work continuously for more than 16 hours in a day. Different departments were held responsible for different tasks. The fast pace of work enabled the company to expand on its client base. I personally witnessed a situation where guests arrived at 8a.m. in the morning and we had to get their rooms prepared by 7.30 a.m. These additional duties were not included in my job roles but I had to fulfill assigned tasks. Part 3 — The Internship Experience Internship role I had performed many functions and roles at the time of my internship program in Fort Rapids Indoor Waterpark and Conference Center. I had joined the company as a sales person. My main job role was to sell the rooms of the hotel and tickets of its water park. But apart from these jobs I had to perform many other types of jobs. I was actively involved in organizing and conducting different events and programs in the hotel. I was responsible for looking after the service which the customers are supposed to get from the hotel. I also looked after room service and room cleaning process. For conducting different events I had to look after the water park. The hotel faced some problems in organizing events. I had to deal with those problems. I also travelled with my boss for performing some business functions. Reasons for my engagements I got engaged in various activities of this company to learn different things which will benefit me in my future work. I was assigned the role of sales person but apart from sales I performed many other types of work which helped me to know about different business process in practical field. I got engaged with my seniors to know and learn about the functions which are required for making the business successful (Price 96). By engaging in different activities I was able to interact with many organizational members. This helped me to know and understand the organizational culture in a better way. Outcome of activities I had performed many types of activities as inter in Fort Rapids Indoor Water Park and Conference Center. I had put a huge effort from my side for performing these activities. My colleagues and seniors relied on my skills and capabilities and gave me responsible tasks. For selling those tickets I had to visit many schools around Columbus for convincing the schools to send their students in the water park of our hotel. I also offered some amount of discounts on the tickets and provided different other offers. I sold some tickets of Arnold Show which was organized in the hotel. Another sample of my work was managing the hotel rooms for providing a good service to the customers. I also looked after the fooding and customer service departments of that hotel. I had assisted my boss in purchasing important things of hotel and in doing business discussion. Week Activities 1 I had met with a customer as per the instruction of my manager. I showed him the service of our company. I was hired to do sales job in this company. 2 I had a detail discussion with the customer about the contact. For selling the hotel rooms I offered discounts to the customer but he was not happy with it. He wanted more discount. As a result I did not sign the contract with the customer. I got the opportunity to join training program for a short span to time. 3 I discussed again with the customer regarding the contract. My employer expected that I should have the skill to convince the customer. For this reason I was talking to the customer. He wanted more discounts but the company cannot provide that. I took an active part in fixing problems in water park. I had attended a meeting which was hold to discuss some problems. Part 4 —LER and Business Courses and the Internship Contribution of major business courses Business courses usually play a vital role while opting for internship. In my internship tenure I had to address different job responsibilities. These responsibilities were centered towards sales operations and recruitment procedure. I had to conduct sales operations as well as recruit international and domestic applicants. During these operations I had been greatly supported by my major business courses. In every university, there is wide range of business courses being taught to students. However I believe that most important courses are the ones which contribute towards future development and growth. My internship work experience was greatly enhanced through three major business courses such as sales management, communication and brand management. I had firstly described about job roles and responsibilities. My immediate boss had given me interrelated activities in order to build up a productive work experience. The recruitment program which I designed was totally based on my communication skills. In my business course on communication I had studied about different components of communication which ultimately upgrades level of communication. In my internship time period I had used all these aspects. On the other hand, brand management techniques encompassed framing strategies to enhance brand name or identity in the market place. This helped me to analyze strategies implemented by the company to attract more clients. Sales management also facilitated me to conduct job responsibility. On basis of my work experience I was able to understand importance of sales promotion activities through distributing tickets to customers. I even had idea about different convincing methods used by sales personnel to crack a deal. Contribution of LER courses LER courses mainly stand for labor and employment relations courses. I feel that LER courses are a vital component within overall business course structure. This is simply because LER courses reveal the underlying concepts related to human resource management. For instance, in my internship tenure I observed many interns who were not aware about workplace practices. They were always overshadowed by their team leaders. This scenario can be avoided only if sufficient knowledge is possessed regarding labor and employment relations. It is major issue in current context since retention of employees is a critical phenomenon for all companies. I was able to analyze well intricacies closely knitted with human resource management practices in Fort Rapids Indoor Waterpark and Conference Center. The two most important LER courses which supported me in my internship work experience are introduction to employment law and workplace dispute resolution. When I was going through these courses it appeared interesting as well as complicated to me. I firstly understood the concept that there exists a minimum wage structure, overtime pay structure and certain manner in which management can deal with workers. Introduction to employment law taught me anti-discrimination law, minimum wages act, compensation law, job privacy protection, collective bargaining. This course enabled me to decide on whether I was receiving right compensation and was a part of unbiased workplace environment. Workplace dispute resolution was another productive LER course for me. It helped me to understand procedures to be followed during my internship that can help to resolve any form of dispute. Principles, elements or ideas of each course Business course that I studied included three main course areas such as sales management, brand management and communication. The principle of communication course was that every individual needs to adopt appropriate communication channels so as to transmit message to receiver. I have even possessed the idea of disrupting elements in communication path way. These features helped me to communicate efficiently with my team members as well as clients. On the other hand, principle or ideas behind brand management was brand name is most valuable intangible asset of an organization. There are strategies adopted by organizations in order to develop strong relationships between customers and brand. This phenomenon helped in my internship tenure when I could determine brand value of Fort Rapids Indoor Waterpark and Conference Center in market place. This facilitated me to work in more appropriate manner in terms of offering service to clients and gaining their feedback. Sales management was an important concept which contributed significantly towards my internship work experience. Selling touchpoints and methodology of closing a deal are key elements of this business course. I was chosen for sales position and these elements enabled me to deal properly with target audience. There were two other courses which are part of LER course structure. Employment law course incorporated in me all necessary laws associated with human resource management. This in turn helped me to evaluate work place conditions of Fort Rapids Indoor Waterpark and Conference Center. I can even take support of these laws in my future job roles and responsibilities. The dispute resolution concept enables employees to deal with trade union and management. It can be stated as key idea behind workplace dispute resolution. On basis of this approach I was able to avoid any dispute and even outline solution for any organizational conflict. Deficit in course structure LER course structure portrayed all the essential elements which were essential for me to know while working in a real world organization. However the scenario was not similar in business course structure. The business course structure encompassed courses which were inclined towards theoretical frameworks. I could not find much of relevance between theoretical structures and real world scenario. There were steps of selling process highlighted in sales management course structure. This was not helpful for me to a great extent since I needed real time examples of selling techniques. I could have performed better in my internship if I had this knowledge set. Part 5 — The Internship and Career Goals Internship contributed to my career goals My career goal is to become a well established sales person. I am very much interested in performing different types of marketing activities. For this reason I was interested to join sales internship program. The internship program helped me to enhance my marketing skills for selling products and services. With the improvement of my marketing skills I am able to make an effective communication with the customers. This helped me to understand how to convince the customers for selling a product. The internship program also helped me to understand the mindset of different people. The internship program showed me the way how to set up my career goals as per the practical situations. I was able to sell many products during the time of my internship program. This facilitated me to enhance my confidence level. As a result of this I am able to take different challenges for achieving my career goals and objectives. After doing the internship program I am very much interested to work in hotel industry. Therefore I am developing my career goals in such a way which will help me to work in hotel industry. Internship experience I have a very good experience of my internship program. I had performed a wide range of activities and programs during my internship program from which I have experienced many new things. My internship program was well organized. I joined Fort Rapids Indoor Waterpark and Conference Center as sales executive. I had to perform many sale activities for selling products and services of the hotel. I had to deal with different types of customers which provided me detailed knowledge about them. Apart from selling products and services I was involved in various other activities. Those activities gave me the experience of handling various responsible functions. The internship program was worthwhile because it helped to enhance my skills and capabilities for performing different functions. This program helped me to become multi-tasker. I became experienced to deal with different functions within a short span of time. Reasons behind internship program for other students I feel that this form of internship program provides great opportunity to students. I have gained a lot of productive opportunities during my internship tenure. My sales skills along with communication skills were enhanced during my internship program. I was able to learn selling mechanisms and this facilitated me to achieve set targets. On the other hand, I also improved upon my communication skills while working with many industry experts or professionals. I was provided with a platform whereby I was able to interact directly with customers. This opportunity should be grabbed by all students. According to me this kind of summer internship program is essential for other students as well. The organization I had chosen for my internship was indeed a learning organization. Its rapid pace of work encouraged all team members to perform well and set high performance standards. This company is a learning place for all new comers. Team leaders or managers are helpful in this company and they always come forward with creative ideas or opinions. Fort Rapids Indoor Waterpark and Conference Center also is aligned with unbiased workplace practices. Interns will be highly motivated to work in such organizations where leaders provide necessary help as and when required.
