Section/# Expo 2020: A Discussion and Analysis of Dubai’s Successful Proposal to Host the World’s Fair Since the World’s Fair (Expo) began in London in 1851, individuals from around the globe have traveled to distant regions as a means of cultural exchange, engagement with new ideas, and interpretation/understandings the future and what it might hold. In such a way, the world fair is a manner through which a particular region or group of people can represent a level of understanding and global consciousness that proves their level of interconnectedness to the remainder of global society. As can easily be seen, the bid to host the world fair is something that nations actively lobby for in the hopes that they cannot only learn from the representations of new ideas and other cultures but that they can represent their own ideas and cultural interpretations as relevant to the future and the key concerns that individuals have with regards to the way in which human society continues to develop. Accordingly, the way in which a nation wins the right to host the world fair/world Expo is not something that is merely predicated upon chance and hope. Instead, tens of millions of dollars, thousands of hours of planning, and countless energy is expended upon providing a successful bid that will allow a nation/people group to host such an event. As a means of understanding this through the lens of strategic management, the following analysis will discuss the way in which Dubai was able to win the right to post the world Expo 2020. Ultimately, the reason why Dubai was selected by the world Expo committee to host Expo 2020 is contingent upon a clear and unified level of strategic management with regards to the plans that were put forward. In the final running, Brazil, Turkey, Russia, and Dubai all attempted for the rights to post the world Expo 2020. However, as is patently obvious, only Dubai was selected. Rather than does merely being tied to the fact that a narrow margin of victory helps to define devise selection, the reader can and should engage with the understanding of the fact that Dubai was selected based upon the brilliance of its proposal and the effective level of strategic management of this proposal evidenced. As has been stated previously, one of the core reasons for why Dubai was able to receive a plurality of votes, 116 out of 165, have to do with the fact that Dubai’s proposal so effectively matched the key concerns, realities, and future potential towards which the world should work within the coming decades/generations. The proposal itself, carefully crafted by a team of individuals, was dubbed as representing devise approach to the world Expo 2020; “Connecting Minds, Creating the Future”. Yet, beyond a mere mantra, Dubai won the Expo 2020 based upon the design that existed within the proposal that they submitted. The issue of design is something that each and every nation which hopes to post the world Expo must engage. Ultimately, since its inception in 1851, each and every nation that is hosted the world’s fair has attempted to represent a new take upon society and provide relevant cultural interpretations as a means of defining the future world and the way in which it might exist. Ultimately, the world Expo is a means through which new ideas, alongside old ones, are represented as a means of potential solutions for global society. In terms of this reality, the core and fundamental difficulty that existed for Dubai was to create a proposal that not only helps to address these issues but also to be differentiated from the approach that many of the other nations that were hopeful to host it could present. In terms of this approach, strategic management was essential in providing a singularity of message, intent, and presentation that allowed the decision makers/voters to decide upon Dubai as their final choice for hosting Expo 2020. As a means of discussing strategic management and the relation to common aspects of approach and design, the following analysis will highlight the core concepts that Dubai represented to the world Expo steering committee and ultimately saw them win the right to host the event. Ultimately, the proposal that Dubai submitted won due to the fact that it engaged with three distinct needs/realities of the current era. The first of these was with respect to the ever increasing level of globalization that exists throughout the world. Whether an individual appreciates or hates globalization, it is without question that this force has become a primal force with respect to the way in which individuals and business entities engage with one another. As a function of globalization, trade and personal interaction have created a drastically different world. Rather than ignoring this prescient issue, the framers of Dubai’s bid to host the Expo utilized this as a central figure of the way in which they would organize a potential Expo. As such, rather than representing globalization in a figurative sense, the organizers instead chose to represent it in terms of real and tangible physicality. In order to accomplish this, the proposal called for the central area of the 438 hectare site to be left open; serving as a mingling point between the various groups of people that would no doubt travel to Dubai and seek to view the different exhibitions. Organizers of prior world fair events have struggled with the way in which a representation of physicality would be effected within the area in which the Expo itself takes place. Invariably, one central element commands the attention of the entire exhibition. Whether this is represented in terms of a particular cultural approach or a new technology, this particular game has been something that has been exhibited in almost each and every world’s fair since the inception of this exposition in the mid-19th century. However, in breaking away from this stilted and rather conventional approach, the strategic management that the proposal was able to reflect helped the designers to put forward a plan that held globalization and interaction between people as the central, fundamental, and pivotal understanding that should be engaged at the very center of the exhibition itself. As a means of actually accomplishing this goal, the planners were able to however, rather than representing these diverse ideals/ideas in a rather disjointed manner, they chose to layout the exposition in terms of different wings. The power of globalization, the need to envision a more sustainable world, and the power of new opportunities were all compliment parts that Dubai sought to represent. However, the need to represent the culture of Dubai and the manner through which it can speak to all of these elements was also something that required the planners to engage with (Mohammed 5). Ultimately, by representing the Dubai proposal for the World Expo 2020, the planners engaged the decision makers with a plan that would involve different separating the different approaches into atriums or wings of the exposition. By allowing them all to converge at the center, a place in which the idea of mingling and global interaction/globalization would be represented, the fundamental meaning that could be engaged was one in which people came to appreciate the interconnectedness of future society as a fundamental mechanism for change within the world. However, beyond the central component of globalization, Expo 2020 also engages a core approach of creating a more sustainable world. Whereas it is doubtless that many of the other proposals for Expo 2020 were contingent upon the development of renewable resources, Dubai made this a central component within its proposal to host the exposition. This is unique and somewhat surprising due to the fact that the United Arab Emirates, and Dubai specifically, has only been able to transition to the advanced technological power that it is today as a result of vast oil and natural gas resources that were available to it. However, as a means of developing the economy, the United Arab Emirates has significantly engaged in a process of diversification; attempting to create and re-create the United Arab Emirates into a power that is predicated based upon industrial power, sustainable energy, renewable resources, banking, and art and design. As a function of this really evolution, the decision makers/voters that voted for who would host Expo 2020 were convinced that Dubai not only had the most relevant proposal but also had a track record of attempting to affect and engage these changes throughout its society (Stampler 1). In order to more effectively represent a nation that was coherently interested in focused upon the needs of the environment and representing a society that could continue to provide for its material needs without increasingly leveraging diminishing natural resources, the ethos of the presentation in terms of strategic management and singularity of voice was represented. Doubtless it was this very level of direct consideration that allowed the Dubai proposal to be represented as a coherent piece that sought to integrate with the key needs that a world expo should engender. A final contingent representation that existed within Dubai’s bid to host Expo 2020 is with respect to the focus upon new opportunities that exist throughout the world. Ultimately, even though the power and impacts of culture, globalization, and sustainable resource development are all component factors of the successful bid that Dubai was able to represent, and atrium/wing of the project and proposal was contingent upon new opportunities that were likely to be developed within the future; as well as those that are already represented within the current era. Although not every aspect of the proposal can be measured as a function of overall importance, it must be understood that each and every world Expo since the inception of this particular engagement has been primarily focused upon the way in which new technology and industry can help to facilitate the way in which future life is carried out. With the breakneck speed of design and technological proficiency, the framers of the Dubai Expo 2020 were able to engage this compound reality is a core and fundamental aspect of the proposal. By engaging the decision making team with regards to the manner through which Dubai was cognizant of the need to represent a marketplace of new ideas and promote the development of the entire world, rather than merely show the strength and power of Dubai, the decision makers necessarily chose it as a far better overall proposal than those which were put forward by the likes of the Russian Federation, Turkey, or even Brazil (Watts 8). From the information that is thus far been presented, it is clear and apparent that Dubai was ultimately able to win Expo 2020 as a direct result of his superior level of presentation and the sharp ideas that was able to culminate with respect to pressing issues that exists within the current world. In much the same way that politics helps to set the tone for business, and vice versa, Expo 2020 is ultimately able to set the tone with regards to the way in which nations interact with one another, and could potentially indirect, within the coming decades. Within such an understanding, it becomes patently obvious that the design, proposal, and planning that went into winning the right to host this exposition was of the utmost importance and ultimately something that contributes to the development of the world and the manner through which interaction will take place within the immediate future. Whereas it is doubtless true that many other nations had exceptional proposals as well, Dubai succeeded over these due in part to the fact that it was able to culminate the differing needs of society and set them against the backdrop of the individual participant.
