Extract of sample "Human Resources Career plan"

Ever since high school when I witnessed our principal, Mrs. Martin deals with an incident at school, I have wanted to become a Human Resource professional. The incident involved two teachers who had a conflict arising from their salary and responsibilities. Miss Joanna and Miss Baxter, the two teachers caused uproar at school each of them trying to get other teachers on their side. Miss Joanna felt that remuneration should be made based on competence as opposed to seniority as had been the culture of the school.

Many of us students liked Miss Joanna, so we were all on her side and supported her plight through demonstration outside the principal’s office. Parents found out about this and demanded that a solution be arrived at as soon as possible as the conflict was interrupting normal learning largely. Mrs. Martin decided to hold a meeting, shortly after, with the two teachers but separately. Prior to that, she addressed us and assured us that neither of the two would be leaving, as their complaints would be dealt with impartially. Mrs. Martin had settled the matter and both teachers were left satisfied; before the week had ended.

This made me admire her job, and thus not long after I went to see her. She informed me that she had studied Administration and Human Resources while in university. In addition, she explained to me what choosing to pursue a career in the same would entail and the learning process involved. However, she relayed to me that it was important I undertake a self-assessment, which would enable me, identify my strengths and weakness and how they would match to such a career. Self-Assessment A year later and I have finally done a conclusive evaluation of my strengths and weaknesses; with the help of the knowledge, I have gained from this class.

I enjoy working with people, to brainstorm on issues, get informed on market trends and people’s opinion on them and to learn new things. Furthermore, I strongly feel that everyone is entitled to a safe and healthy working environment, as a satisfied employee is a productive one. In addition, I believe learning should be a continuous process that employees should have access to not only for organization prosperity, but also to cultivate loyalty with them. Moreover, my friends and family tell me that I have a welcoming demeanor, which I feel is valuable as a HR professional as people can easily approach me.

General skills that I possess that would be valuable in this career include the ability to work under pressure. I am can think fast and be decisive when presented with a challenge that must be addressed urgently. Besides that, I am able to multitask and prioritize things that require attention based on their importance and urgency. I value being punctual; therefore, endeavor to keep time always. Being a team player, I am an ardent believer in extra-curricular activities as they enhance socializing and sportsmanship skills.

I enjoy writing, which I feel would be essential for a HR professional as the job includes documenting policies. My weaknesses include being talkative and being assertive which comes out as stubbornness; I hope to work on these through internship placements (Schleifer, 2006). Career Goal I would like to be a HR professional preferably in an IT or organization. This is because I like being up to date with innovation in the industry. I would also be interested in working at a non-governmental organization focused on enterprise development among young people.

This is because I have interacted with my peers who have a business idea but require guidance when getting started. In addition, I feel that the mentality of seeking employment rather than creating is one that ails my generation and it should thus be changed. I hope to work in an environment that provides continuous learning opportunities and allows me time to engage actively in social activities with friends and family (Cardenas, n.d). Career Bridge To get into this career successfully, I must earn a degree and post-graduate diploma in HR.

Moreover, I should also be a member of a professional body, as it would allow me to participate easily in seminars and workshops that provide training on current and upcoming market trends. To remain relevant in the industry, I must also get a Masters degree in HR that would be complemented with another course such as strategic management. Roadmap for Career Goal In the short-term, approximately two years, I would like to complete my degree and start on a certification and post-graduate diploma in HR.

During these two years, I am planning on interacting and networking with established HR professionals. I view this as a learning opportunity on current trends in the HR industry and advice on how to boost my resume not just academically. This would inform me on the best learning institutions for HR courses and help further refine my social skills. Through the Human Resource club I have joined, I hope to partake in organizing a career fair that would place me in a position to interact with recruiters and possibly get an internship during the holidays (Human Resources at uc Berkeley).

In the long-term, approximately five years, I would like to be pursuing a Master’s degree in HR at which time I will have chosen whether to couple it with strategic management or marketing. I feel that this would be necessary, as presently the job market requires one to be versatile. I hope to be working in a recruitment or management consultancy firm where I will refine my knowledge and further develop relevant skills. I do not intend to be employed for more than seven years, as I want to start a consultancy business where I would focus on start-ups and mid-sized companies (Human Resources at uc Berkeley).

General Occupational Themes After I graduate, I would like to work in a mid-sized or large recruitment and management consultancy firm. I hope to work in a firm that I have previously undertaken an internship. This would be advantageous as I would be already familiar with the organization’s culture and systems. I look forward to undertaking internships in at least two organizations before I graduate. This will further enlighten my ambition to become a HR professional, as I will gain relevant knowledge and have an opportunity to relay what I have learnt.

I am currently seeking an internship in a mid-sized recruitment firm that I feel will facilitate harnessing of my strengths, and working on my shortcomings. The internship would take three months, but I hope to stay on longer and work part-time when school resumes. I believe this would enable me to transfer any knowledge I gain to my fellow HR club members at school. I hope to get a mentor who will provide me with guidance and advice while helping me to attain my goals within the set period. References Schleifer, J.
