A Science-Based Global Healthcare: GlaxoSmithKline Company GlaxoSmithKline is a science-based global healthcare company with a mission to improve the life's quality of a human, by encouraging them to perform, feel better and live longer. This mission helps the company to be able to develop medicines that are innovative and product that will help millions of people internationally. The GlaxoSmithKline Company has its headquarters in the United Kingdom (UK). Since it is an international organization it has branches worldwide and main centers for research in the UK, Spain USA, china and Belgium (GlaxoSmithKline, 2011, p. 2). GlaxoSmithKline is a responsible leader, and this means that the organization cares about the impact that it has on people and various places. They are also responsible, in helping developing countries, where troublesome diseases affects millions of people, and where they are unable to access the medicines and vaccines that are a life changing. This occurring challenge has made the company provide medicines on discount where they need the most. GSK is among the few healthcare organizations that are researching on both medicines and vaccines, to conquer the three world health organization’s diseases that include; HIV/AIDS, tuberculosis and malaria. They have so far developed some of the leading worldwide medicines in these areas. GlaxoSmithKline also produces medicines that treat various diseases including; asthma, diabetes, infections, antivirals, and digestive conditions. In addition, they are now developing new cancer treatments (GlaxoSmithKline, 2011, p. 9). GlaxoSmithKline is works together with the local communities in both the civilized and developing countries. They are able to develop, programs that are supportive, innovative, sustainable and bring relief to these communities. Some of these programs include; the independent living programs for young people with disabilities, migrant health promotion programs, national forum of women’s health, nurse and midwifery training, home nursing for children with cancer, care for children with incurable diseases and annual impact awards that recognize the invaluable work of healthcare charities (GlaxoSmithKline, 2011, p. 12). The GlaxoSmithKline Company, was able to receive a community mark, and this is because people in the surrounding communities, were able to point out their achievements and how their services have benefited the local communities. The community mark recognizes the organization for a long term high commitment to the community. The GSK is the first manufacturing company to be able to attain this award. Some of the achievements of GlaxoSmithKline include; providing medicines to stop mosquito-borne parasitic disease, they have also worked in partnership with Africa, to increase awareness and funding to help combat the malaria disease, they have been able to respond rapidly to disaster stricken areas by providing medicines through proven networks. Furthermore, the GSK Company is transparent to its people and they do this by being transparent in publishing the annual report and corporate responsibility report (GlaxoSmithKline, 2011, p.12). Green organization The GlaxoSmithKline organization has revised its environmental friendly strategy by focusing on carbon, waste, water and environmental stewardship. The GSK Company has developed site-based events that analyze local carbon reduction potential and act on opportunities. In 2011, they were able to reduce their energy consumption by 5.2%, greenhouse gas emission from the use of inhalers rose by 2.9%. GSK also recognizes water as a natural resource and, therefore, it plays a positive role in sustainability of the water and, therefore, it has been able to reduce its water consumption in their operations by 6.9 % (GlaxoSmithKline, 2011, p. 44). GlaxoSmithKline is working on zero waste going to the landfill. They have reduced waste generation in their operations by 1.2% and reduced waste send to the landfill by25%. They have also taken initiative, according to GlaxoSmithKline (2011.p.44) to recycle used inhalers. Their main aim is to minimize the quantity of packaging and recycling materials where possible and to talk to consumers to recycle after use. GlaxoSmithKline has begun using their own waste plastic to make Ribena bottles, and this has provided more than a quarter of their annual bottle requirement. This has saved three thousand tons of carbon emission a year. On environmental stewardship GSK has continued to improve their understanding of environmental impacts and they are now working with the main suppliers. They have detailed meetings with the main suppliers on developing carbon scripts for materials and are use these data to enhance their environmental performance. Publics’ opinion The peoples opinion on the GSK services and products in that it has made life easier for them because they are now living longer years, thanks to the introduction of vaccines and medicines that treat illnesses. The GSK Company has been able to fight the problematic diseases, like tuberculosis and malaria, through campaigns that have made the local people, aware of the various ways that will help curb these diseases. Since the organization is selling their medicine on discount, it enabled every person who is ill to purchase them at a cheaper price and, therefore, making the drugs accessible by everyone. The organization has also allowed the local people to sell their products so as to can make a living from the sale. The Gsk has almost zero environmental effect to the community's locals since the inception of the, environmental waste, management programs. For example, they are getting rid of their waste products through recycling waste paper (GlaxoSmithKline, 2011, p.156). The GlaxoSmithKline organization has played a crucial role in the lives of people living with disabilities. The organization has made it possible for these to access the various facilities and services. These exact people are able to start up new businesses and be independent. The organization has encouraged people living with disabilities, to think positively by fighting for their rights in places where other people think that they can do nothing (GlaxoSmithKline, 2011, p. 156). Advantages and disadvantages to the public The main advantage of GlaxoSmithKline is to help people by enhancing the life’s quality and by making them feel better and do more things in life. Other advantages include; GlaxoSmithKline as an international organization that is science based has been able to develop medicines and vaccines to treat people that are ill. It has gone further to make the medicines and vaccines affordable by discounting them and even accessible. This has made people live happily and longer (GlaxoSmithKline, 2011, p. 205). Another advantage is that the organization is the biggest and largest employer in the community. Since it offers routine jobs, and people are able to earn and spend their money in the community. The organization also trains the graduates, since GSK has its main interests in supporting science education; they use them in researches and more. The charity programs put in place is also to the advantage of the community. These programs are sponsored; therefore, they create more opportunities to open up more projects in the area, and this will increase people’s understanding on the science based researches (GlaxoSmithKline, 2011, p. 205). The main aim of the emphasis on science education is to develop young minds on knowledge, understanding and skills for decisions that are sound about science related issues which they meet in their everyday life. This is an encouragement to the science teaching, and this is a benefit to the local community schools since the community will have more GSK employees. The principal disadvantages are; there is unemployment of many people from the local community and, therefore, these puts the local business to a disadvantage; GSK is not in a position of transporting those people who commute since most people are either not employed or lived at a short distance, GSK moves around with their own canteen of food, and this is a disadvantage since the locals do not get to sell their food to them, the local community is to a disadvantage because most of the GSK workers are from different communities so not spending the money they earn in the community(GlaxoSmithKline, 2011, p. 205). Justification of the organization The work of GlaxoSmithKline organization is justifiable in that it has helped enhance the billions of people lives in the world. The organization has developed quality vaccines and medicines that have helped fight the dangerous diseases in humans’ life. Giving People with disabilities power to access various places, and finally the entire organization is focusing on a green environment. They sustain the environment by controlling carbon emission and recycling waste.
