‘‘Leadership: Understanding Its Global Impact’’ Case study by Dalglish and Miller Q1, Issues Doug sees as impacting effective leadership in a globalised world. After years of learning, Doug is becomes the head of the School of Engineering Systems, Queensland University of Technology in Brisbane in Australia. In this position, Doug is expected to offer effective to the staff and students. He explains some factors which affect effective leadership in a globalised world. Doug observes leaders are expected to give results while ensuring that this does not affect the long-term plans of the company (Dalglish and Miller).

Doug asserts that he never comfortable with people whose key focus is to produce results while compromising the long term strategies of the company (Dalglish and Miller). Doug explains that leaders are usually faced with a dilemma of first fulfilling the desires of the shareholders rather first meeting the needs of the customers. The other factor observed by Doug as affecting discharge of effective leadership is balancing between the tight schedules that leaders have and having adequate time to address issues brought up by the staff.

He describes that as a leader, he rarely get time to reflect on various issues nor time to discuss issues with staff in the school. This means that leaders due to pressure from the daily work may come to a decision without giving it the required consideration thereby impacting their leadership. This is supported by Ogunlana (574) who observes that an effective leader must demonstrate ability of building a cohesive team which may be achieved by getting time with the staff. The other factor affecting effective leadership is lack of a holistic understanding of the various disciplines that affect the leader’s realm of leadership.

He argues that in the global work environment, more team work will be required and therefore one needs an understanding of diverse topic. In light of this, Doug is working towards creating a merged school. Doug notes that in the globalised world, a person working on one project may do his part in a different country while the other works on the same project in a different country but at different time. This makes team work very important and an understanding of diverse issues. This argument is supported by (Ogunlana 574) who explains that team work is critical for effective leadership and asserts that an effective leader should be multi-skilled.

Q2, Different leadership and management behaviors illustrated by Doug Doug employs transformational leadership style where he takes time to consult with members of his team and then makes the decision. Transformational leaders have the ability to raise consciousness of the team members on the value of particular organizational outcomes and provide guidance on how to achieve them (Gerhardt 18). Doug explains that he always aspires to be part of the team that achieves the organizational vision.

He demonstrates that he is a transformational leader given his present initiative where he is working with the staff at the school to create a vision for a merged school where the students will acquire diverse skills. As required of a transformational leader, Doug is raises moral and self belief of staff by listening to views. Before making any decision, Doug gathers the views of his staff and evaluates them to come up with a decision. Listening to the views of the subordinates creates self confidence in them.

Doug leadership is based on his personal beliefs in life and this is usually the basis for transformational leadership. Transformational leadership is usually a moral type of leadership (Gerhardt 20). In addition, in line to theory of transformational leadership which postulates that a leader articulates a vision for the group and influences the team towards achieving this vision, Doug has come up with a vision where he intends to develop a program where engineering students acquire diverse skills.

Doug is has a management behavior where he believes that as a leader he is supposed to look after the staff (Dalglish and Miller). He holds that successive management begins by supporting staff who in-turn offers superior service to customers. The net effect of this kind of leadership is that leads to high value for to the shareholders and customers and is a departure from the traditional leadership which focused on addressing the needs of the shareholders. Q3, Leadership Roles As a leader, Doug serves several roles in the organization.

He asserts that as a leader, his major role is looking after people. He notes that he has to look after the staff who in-turn looks after the customers and eventually meets shareholders needs. Doug supports his staff by taking time to listen to their issues although he observes that this is limited by his busy schedule. This is also echoed by Muna (53) who observes that an effective must always be there for members of his team. In addition, has the role that the organization achieves its short term and long term strategies.

He expresses disregard for leaders who in the quest to deliver results compromises the organizational long term strategies. This demonstrates that as a leader, he is charged with ensuring that the organization remains in course in achieving its long term strategies. The other role played by Doug in the organization is that of leading the way in developing a vision for the school. Based on his assessment of the current state of affairs in the business world, Doug has observed that greater team work is required.

Consequently, he led the way for the school to develop a vision of integrated engineering program. Muna (52) supports this by asserting that a leader has the role of creating a vision for the team and guiding the team to achieve the vision. Doug also plays a critical role of motivating the employees. He is achieved by listening to the views of the staff before making any decision. This motivates the employees since they feel that they are appreciated in the organization and therefore they put maximum efforts in their work.

In addition, Doug affirms values to the employees. Given strong background that instilled values in Doug, he is always self motivated and strives to give every task the best. Through his work ethics, Doug instills positive work values to the staff by demonstrating that he practices what he says. This acts as a chance of influencing others and passing to them positive work ethics.
