of Sustainability Sustainability refers to making it sure that life with all its benefits will last. If life has to be valuable it must be something sustainable in the long run. This consistent on how the concept is defined by the Brundtland Commission1 of the United Nation General Assembly. A development that is needed by humans should be one that “meets the needs of the present without compromising the ability of the future generations to meet their own needs”.2
If applied to a business organization, sustainability means looking at the future and not sacrificing it for the short-term. To sacrifice therefore the future may be to overlook the same by considering too much the short term. To illustrate one my may have so much revenues in the short-term but if it cannot be sustained it can be a problem. Companies for example acquire assets which are partly current and party non-current in nature. It is seldom for a business entity which does not maintain non-current assets. This means that the long-term growth for a company must be maintained.
What is said about a company may also be applicable to the economy. The sustainability of the economy has now become a great concern for every government in the world for without sustainability there is no clear success or development and there could be no more quality life for generations to come. Sustainability must the reason for the need to address climate change by governments.
Sustainable economy therefore means growth that could be sustained over the long-run and one that would sustain life as well for everybody. It must be understood that the economy consists of producers in the form of entities and companies producing goods and services and consumers of these good and services.3 From the investments of these companies are financial resources from investors as well which are looking for long-term sustainability also. Without sustainability therefore, everybody would be doomed and that it would result to not trusting the future and the same could be dangerous. It would be something that would result to lacking hope or sense ending in the story of everyone.
An average life span for each nation has been determined and this has something to do with the economic status of countries which are reflective in standard of living. The higher the stage of the economic development, the higher is the life span of the citizens.4 Since life span is essentially correlated with sustainability, the latter concept must be a desired objective for every economy. In fact the developed status of the developed nations have sustained growth for long-term time than usual before they could be classified as developed compared with the developing nations or are still trying to sustain their economic growth
In this context sustainability entails economic development which must be desired for every nation in this world. Sustainability connotes also stability that would allow planning for people and organizations. Without planning companies may not take risk in making long-term investment since they could not be assured of the return of their money. Long-term term sustainability has the necessary meaning of trying not to spend much in the short-term so that one have a longer time to operate and to exist.
Sustainability therefore requires discipline or capacity to endure. Thus, biological systems must be able to support life by remaining diverse and productive overtime not only for present generations but the generations to come. It a sense of the of caring for the future generation that they may enjoy life as well if not better because of the necessary continuous consumption of resources at the present time. The forests for example need to be always there with the trees and all the lives there as they have a purpose in the ecosystem.
Human beings then in its attaining sustainability must be therefore aiming to a quality of life that can be viewed different dimensions – that is environmentally, economically and socially. Preserving the ecosystem and the environment becomes then a necessity for the organisms’ need for vital goods and services over the long-rum. There is therefore need to manage the environment by reducing the negative human impact of the consumption of goods and services.5 This can be done by taking care of mother earth via doing things that will promote and preserve biodiversity and avoiding or minimizing activities that could destroy the environment. Consumption of resources may also be managed by economics with regulation.
To attain sustainability requires also realizing its economic, social, cultural, health-related, monetary/financial aspects. It is therefore a concern for everybody and since human acts through their governments, the latter must be able to produce and implement law that will work to the attainment of its goals. This could be in the way urban housing and transport are managed or the lifestyles and consumerism influenced by those who have power. This could also take the form of sustainable agriculture, green building, creating sustainable cities or just influencing people in the lifestyles to adjust with the need to the environment.
As such sustainability must be viewed as one requiring continuous effort or a process.6 As such it must involve people, organizations or institutions, the mother earth or the environment and its resources. Caring for the environment should be implemented collectively and should be future-oriented. Since this would require changes, human’s consumption patterns, behavior, attitudes, habit in spending and purchasing as well as society’s perception of how environment is valued must be part.
Government policies that are enacted and enforced should be innovative and relevant such as on recycling and reusing would play a great part in seeing the process done. Compelling relevant companies treat and reuse their industrial waste, instead of discharging them that could cause loss of clean water from city sources may a possible way of attaining the purpose.7
To conserve water usage by encouraging the less fabrication of domestic garbage by providing incentive for recycling at origin, and impose a collection fee based on weight of garbage may be good measures to make people and industries responsible as each participate in the great work of attaining sustainability. This would be an alternative to making people pay a flat rate or taxing them for their consumption of goods.8 To tax them and them spend money to fix what could have prevented in the first place is a better option. Prevention is better the cure is very applicable as a necessary part of the process. This would have the effect of making things more sensible if one wants every decision maker to be responsible.
As a bottom line, sustainable development can be reduced in a quality of life with desirable features. Sustainability if attained could not be far from ensuring a satisfactory shelter for everybody, an education for everyone at all levels, the chance to develop any professional or creative career, right to health, reasonable level of safety inside and outside their houses.9
To be able to experience human right to life, sustainability must be attained. To be equal in opportunities regardless, gender, religion, race or language requires a government that could help ensure the sustenance and satisfaction of the human needs and wants to satisfy them at the reasonable level. This could then ripen or necessary coincide with a right to choose a government that is ready to implement what is good for the people.
To summarize, sustainability can be equated with having the quality of life that would make pleasurable and enjoyable. With sustainability attained, environment protection could create a world where people enjoy nature and its diversity. The same people could have their rights to abundant clean water, clean air, capacity development, and participation in cultural activities and events that would enhance their total happiness.
