The history of the company could be traced back to Michael Marks who set up a penny stall in Leeds selling almost everything in 1884. From there onwards the company led by its chairman and other executives experienced organic and strategic growth becoming one of the largest retailers in the world (M&S 2009). The company offers a versatile blend of products and services to its customers ranging from clothing, accessories, home products, and food items. The company procures these products from 2,000 global suppliers keeping in view to offer the highest standards so that the customers could have the feeling of quality and can easily relate the brand to the prestige it brings to their lives. The company employs 78,000 individuals globally and operates 668 stores in the UK and has an international presence in 40 territories with its 296 retail stores. The company has recently experienced high growth rates in the international market as customers from these markets are becoming increasingly aware of international brands and opt for high quality and prestige which Marks and Spencer offer through its products and services to millions of customers every year (M&S 2009).

The company’s majority of sales are from its food products constituting 51% of sales and the remaining are from clothing and home products. The company’s food and clothing business units share a market of 3.9% and 11.2% respectively. The company is the market leader in Women’s Lingerie sector having a 19.1% volume market share. The company has been able to achieve growth in its sales in the year ending 2009.
