Technological development and the economic conditions have changed the way people lead their lives. As Rowley (1999, pp. 514 – 519) explains, today both genders work, women who previously dedicated time to shopping and home chores are now working and don’t have sufficient time to go out and shop. Work pressure has also increased where jobs are becoming more demanding and people resort to taking up two jobs to make ends meet. Such a busy schedule leaves them very little time to shop at retail outlets.
Moreover, with advancing technology, people want to avail the chance of e-retailing especially groceries as they can save time and avoid rush hours. Increasingly grocery stores are giving their customers the choice to shop online with the facility to deliver the products also. The working sector is switching towards this new mode of shopping. Additionally, the internet is now giving a new niche a chance to shop independently name the physically impaired or those who are too old. Working women and men are also beginning to shop online.
Single men and women are also prospective customers (New York Times 2004). Teenagers are also potential customers as they are very technology savvy and like to shop online rather than go physically to the stores. Moreover, there is a social need especially among women to shop online so that one appears to be technologically advanced. Time is another reason for shopping online. Firstly e retailing saves time and secondly, it saves customers the hassle and thus those customers that seek to save time and don’t have the patience to wait for hours in a line like to shop online.
