SAMSUNG FACES THE CHALLENGE OF COMPETITION [Insert al Affiliation] While the South Korean technology giant, Samsung Electronics Co., remains the leading smartphone vendor with a 32% global market share during the last quarter of 2014, it currently faces one of the deadly challenges, stiff competition, that is threatening its market dominance. Its global market share has been plummeting by approximately 1% every year over the past five years, a record that has left its executives stunned. The smartphone market is anticipated to proliferate as it incessantly takes the market for feature phones.
However, competition is escalating in emerging markets where Samsung expected to reap heavily. This has been attributed to the entrance of manufacturers such as Micromax Mobile, Lenovo, Huawei, and Xiaomi, which have brought in low-priced products with high performance and high-end specifications (Trefis, 2014). Consequently, these competitors have been finding indulgence and favor among aspirational, budget-mindful consumers who feel that their tastes, preferences and needs are sufficiently met by the companies.
Emerging markets are proving to be troublesome to Samsung due to its inability to compete effectively with the new entrants that bring in innovation, more customer-tailored products and services, and low prices that consumers find attractive. Emerging markets that were once lucrative to Samsung have now turned into a liability (Trefis, 2014). What is hurting Samsung most is the sheer fact that consumers have decided to expand their horizon and seek other brands that the market provides. Apparently, due to competition, Samsung is losing its loyal customer and might soon be operating at a loss unless the management takes an immediate corrective action to contain the competition and electronics market.
