Data Warehouse: A Practical Approach al Affiliation Data Warehouse: A Practical Approach What is meant by taking a practical approach to the management of a data warehouse project? A practical approach to the management of a data warehouse project means a compromise approach that integrates the top-down approach with the bottom-up approach where planning is based on the overall organizational picture; yet, implementers “adopt the principles of the bottom-up approach and build the conformed data marts based on a priority scheme” (Ponniah, 2010, p. 31).Will taking a practical approach leads to success or failure? Why? Why not?

Give reasons to justify your response. Taking a practical approach could lead to success or failure depending on the clarity of goals or standards set by the organization, as well as on the ability to design strategies to achieve the defined goals. For instance, the establishment of data marts, which is within the practice of the bottom-up approach, actually depends on the planning that has been conducted in the top-down approach, or an overall enterprise level. Then, there should be consistency in designing data marts to ensure that each data mart uses the information according to their specific needs and requirements, but in conjunction with the set organizational goals.

When there is inconsistency in the design and implementation of informational strategies, there could be delays in the attainment of explicitly defined objectives. As such, when this happens, the practical approach could be considered failing in attaining the defined goals.ReferencePonniah, P. (2010). Data Warehousing Fundamentals for it Professionals.
