Intercultural Communication Competence Intercultural Communication Competence An analysis of my personal level of interculturalcommunication competence shows that it is fairly and that I am able to establish and maintain relationships with people from other cultures. It is satisfying to note that I am able to collaborate with people from diverse cultures in pursuing something of mutual interest and need. I am yet to develop a level of empathy that will help me see things as accurately as my colleagues see them from their frames of reference.

The analysis reveals that I am still having difficulty communicating with my colleagues from other cultures without losing or distorting the intended meaning. This is resulting from my lack of proficiency in another language. I am sensitive to intercultural differences that can escalate into open conflicts (Baack, 2012). It is important for me to achieve a higher level of intercultural communication competence especially mastering a foreign language. This is because it would help me identify better with my colleagues.

For example, using the same name to refer to an item as my colleagues from other cultures would give me a sense of inclusion. Professionally, an enhanced intercultural communication competence would make it easy for me to address the needs of my customers. For example, it would replace the difficulty that comes with an interpreter changing a word used by a customer seeking for a friendlier one but in the end water down the client’s intended meaning. Academically, a higher intercultural communication competence would serve to increase my knowledge.
