Karl Marx stratified the population in two dimensions. Marx grouped individuals according to their relationships with production. In Marx theories, societies are either proletariat or bourgeoisie. The bourgeoisie is the group of individuals who owned production in the society. According to Marger (2012), the proletariats on the other hand, are employees of the owners of production. Max Weber, however disagreed with Karl’s classification describing it as too limiting and narrow.
According to Max Weber, social stratification has three dimensions. In Economic inequality, people were classified into economic hierarchical classes. With economic inequality dimension, the groupings were done either into low or high economic classes (Marger, 2014). Wealth was factored in stratification. Social prestige forms another dimension and power formed the subsequent dimensions. Marger (2012) asserts that Prestige and /or power classified people according to how those people were valued by their constituents.
Gerhard Lenski had a different dimension in social stratification. According to Lenski, coercion and social conflicts led to social stratification. Power and privilege contribute to coercion hence the social conflicts in Lenski’s view. In the theory of radical conflict by Lenski, human differences are natural and genetic. Social stratification therefore has two dimensions in classification; power and privilege. To some extent Lenski is solving the ideological conflict between scholars (Marger, 2012).
