An analysis of the business communication skills needed by entry-level accountantsThe article titled “An analysis of the business communication skills needed by entry-level accountants” by Christensen & Rees (2002) argues that communication skills for level entry accountants are important but at the moment, it can be noted that the areas that need improvement cannot be fully ascertained. Basically, communication forms the backbone of all work in the organization. Information is exchanged through communication and there are different types of communication skills that can be used to achieve this.

The other important aspect of the accounting profession is that the accountants deal with people on a daily basis hence they need to be able to communicate effectively. The study notes that "recent surveys of employers of accounting graduates confirm that communication skills are important in preparing students to work as accountants (Lee and Blaszcynski 1999, Lau and Rans 1993). This is very important since it will help the graduates to effectively carry out their work. The above-mentioned study is survey based and it can be categorized as quantitative research.

The instrument utilized for collecting data is a questionnaire and this attempts to quantify data in numerical terms. Each response is assigned a numerical value and these values can be computed to show the quantity or number of people who share the same opinion from the questions shown in the survey. In most cases, surveys use structured questions and the respondent is asked to tick the box indicating their overall opinion. All the findings can be analyzed using numerical values for each variable.

The results of this survey have shown that communication skills are essential especially for new hires. The study notes that the major important communication skills that are required by the new graduates include spelling, grammar, punctuation as well as writing clearly and precisely. This helps the new accountants to be in a position to achieve the desired goals especially with regards to information exchange with their targeted audiences. The study has noted that new accountants often lack basic communication skills such as writing and this often impacts negatively on their performance since there are chances that they may be rated as poor though it may not be the case.

To a larger extent, this study is authentic given that there is no work that can be done without communication. Workers exchange views and ideas through the use of different communication styles that range from verbal to nonverbal communication, written as well as listening strategies. In order to be effective in communication, each individual should be conversant in one or all of the communication skills outlined above. The other important aspect why communication is vital in the accounting profession is that the accountants are in a better position to give instructions to their workmates.

The employees are also in a position to create mutual understanding among themselves if they communicate effectively. This can be achieved through the use of effective communication skills where the communicators are clear and precise in whatever they say. Over and above, it can be noted that communication is pivotal in the accounting profession and the new hires should familiarise themselves with different communication skills so as to be able to operate effectively.
