Broadcasting companies lobbying against transparency The media have always pressed for precision, whether by suing for admittance to government papers or by requesting exceptional treatment. Many of the country’s prime media stations are flexing their power in Washington against a government proposal to increase transparency of political expenditure. The federal communication commission proposed that all broadcasters post political advertisement data on the web. This move aimed at promoting transparency in the political world.
With the general elections, quickly approaching the federal communication commission wants the public to have more access to political campaigns. Currently broadcasters post the political ad data, but only a few people have access to such information (Elliott 1). According to the chair of the FCC the broadcasters are against transparency. This according To Julius Genachowski was acting against the ethical rules of journalism (Elliott 1). The advantage of the proposal was to protect the public against theft.
The public would learn to the agencies or individuals funding the political campaigns. The FCC proposed that broadcasters need to post on the Internet particulars of political ad purchases plus the individuality of the purchaser and the value. This would ensure that politicians become more accountable, and government funds used for the good of the nation. The broadcasters however, argue that the move would see them spend more money on labor. The media stations required to update the data after every hour, and this would end up burdening the media stations.
The media stations required by law, to charge political advertisements at a cheaper price. The media stations dispute that by publishing information on the web would impair their capacity to discuss with potential advertisers (Elliott 1). The solution to this heated and ranging argument is to post the data weakly. This would ensure that the media stations have adequate time to organize their data. The FCC would also get the information they require, and it would ensure transparency in the political arena.
