Some employees had to lose their jobs because the opportunities available were minimum at the time; therefore, they had to be displaced. It is clear that the workers were innocent, and it was not their fault that the company closed other branches. The following are the reasons why the Levis Company displaced workers were entitled to the sizeable severance package and it was not just a case of corporate largesse.

The first reason was that they were jobless and had no other alternative at that moment. Losing a job abruptly can be traumatizing and can result in redundant stress (Schweke, 2004). The salary earned by an individual at the workplace helps in feeding the family and educating children. Therefore, lacking a job means that nothing noteworthy can be done. The second reason is that most of the Levis Company’s workers were not properly educated and had low literacy skills. Therefore, finding another job elsewhere was going to be a difficult task; hence, they had to be compensated for them to run their own private business.

The sizeable severance helped them to edify themselves to higher levels to find a suitable job opportunity. Having several requirements that are supposed to be achieved, one needs money to do all his/her plans. Lacking a job, which is the source of money is stressful and can make a person practice anti-social activities such as robbery, murder, and stealing. For this reason, Levis Strauss & Company had no other option but to compensate their workers who had become jobless. This would reduce the possibilities of increasing numbers of crimes in the state, hence promoting peace.

Another reason is to lessen the number of oppositions and critics who would be against the company’s business goals. Therefore, to part ways in a peaceful manner and avoid demonstrations on the streets, the workers had to be given severance to maintain their normal lifestyle. This was indispensable for Levis Company to improve on their sales since they had few clients. Finally, business ethics requires that displaced workers be given enough severance to help them live a comfortable life when they are still settling.

Hence, it was the right of Levis Strauss & Company’s employees to be given the severance and was not an act of corporate largesse. Conclusively, severance packages given to workers of any company should be the responsibility of the business organization to ensure displaced workers get enough. In summary, workers become jobless, and they may involve themselves in committing crimes. It is their right to get the severance package according to business ethics and for a company to protect their business name from enemies.

Therefore, the government should ensure that companies adhere to the business regulations.
