Used Car Acquisition, 180 Day Cycle Used car sources typically acquire new used car inventory on a regular basis. Dealerships typically get fleetsor lots of used vehicles no more than twice each week, depending on sources. Fifteen dealerships will be called twice each week, based on days each location takes in new inventory. Every dealership receives used cars on different days, other than the trade ins they receive on new or nearly new cars. A rotating schedule of calling each dealership twice per week will be based on days after receiving new used care inventory. According to the Manheim March calendar, Manheim Dallas holds auctions each Wednesday at 10:00 am. This auction includes vehicles from the Ft. Worth location. Therefore, each location will be called on Tuesdays for listings, to determine whether Wednesday auctions will have any vehicles of interest. Adesa holds auctions in Dallas on Thursdays, at 10:00 am. America’s auto auction holds sales on Tuesdays and Thursdays at 2:00 pm, in nearby Irving. Therefore, America’s inventories will be reviewed on Mondays and Wednesdays, when available. Auctions will be attended in person, so that the exterior and interior conditions of vehicles can be inspected, prior to sale. Auctions will be attended on Sunday mornings, Thursday mornings and Tuesday/Thursday afternoons. There will be little time available for making calls on Thursday. Therefore, no calls will be made on Thursday. Tuesday mornings will be utilized for calling car rental companies and a portion of dealerships. Car rental companies often sell vehicles when they receive new inventory of rental vehicles. This occurs less frequently, so calls to car rental companies will occur once each week. Three car rental companies, Dollar, Enterprise and Hertz, will be contacted on Friday afternoons on the second and fourth Friday of each month of each month. Every other Friday afternoon will be used as time to catch up on paperwork or for additional contacts and inquiries. While the schedule for assessing available used cars at wholesale prices mostly involves making phone calls, it also may involve going online and accessing inventories from a variety of sources, particularly the used auto auction sites. Time is allotted in the weekly and monthly schedule for this activity. The schedule for finding wholesale cars will repeat every 30 days, for the next 180 days. Weekly schedules are the same, with the exception of the second and fourth Friday afternoon each month, for calls to rental car companies. For each day of the week, the call schedule is broken down into tasks for morning and afternoon. Calls are not required to be made in any specific order, as long as the appropriate businesses on the call list for a particular morning or afternoon are completed and any online inventories that are scheduled are reviewed. The schedule below represents a typical thirty day cycle of calls, attending auctions and reviewing online inventories. Craigslist will be checked daily, with inquiries via email and/or phone made at the time the listing is discovered. This can be done each morning, as morning auctions do not begin until 10:00 am.
