All injuries and accidents that occur within the work area must be properly documented and reported to the attending supervisor and to the Safety Officer. 3. Access to the work area is permitted only to authorized personnel.

Authorized personnel is required to wear proper identification before entering the work area. Unauthorized personnel must secure permits before entering the work area. 4. All employees and personnel entering the work area are required to wear the proper safety equipment upon entry to the work area. Definitions: Power-Operated Tools. This refers to the laser system, which is used to manufacture fiber optics in the plant. Laser. The acronym stands for “Light Amplification by Stimulated Emission of Radiation.

” This refers to the whole laser “system” that consists of the following: Excitation Mechanism. Refers to the power source. Active Medium. Refers to the gas chamber where energy from the power source is amplified, emitting the laser beam. Feedback Mechanism. Refers to the mechanism that amplifies the laser beam by bouncing the beam back and forth inside the active medium. Output Coupler. Refers to the mirror that allows the laser beam to escape from the feedback mechanism. This also refers to the Class IV Laser that is used in the manufacturing plant.

Work Area. Refers to the collective space containing both the controlled area and the restricted area. Controlled area. Refers to space where workers and employees gain remote control access to operating the laser. Restricted Area. Refers to space where the laser is located. This is the area where the laser beam is emitted and targeted towards the fiber optic cables. Laser Hazards. Refers to the direct damages the laser light can cause to the eye (i.e. flash burns, reduced vision, blind spots, and permanent blindness) and to the skin (i.e. skin burns, skin ruptures, photochemical damages, and chronic damages), and other related dangers such as electric shocks and fires.

 Protective Equipment. Refers to the appropriate protective goggles assigned for the corresponding laser system.
